Abstract

Background: Menstrual hygiene management (MHM) is critical for adolescents’ health and well-being; however, challenges such as limited water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) facilities, stigma, and lack of education persist in low- and middle-income countries. In Indonesia, most studies have focused on knowledge and attitudes rather than the determinants of practices, leaving this area underexplored.Purpose: This study aimed to identify the determinants of menstrual hygiene management practices among adolescents. Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted online with 365 females aged 12 to 24 years using purposive sampling. Data collection tools included the Menstrual Hygiene Management (MHM) questionnaire, the Depression Anxiety Stress Scale (DASS-21), the Multidimensional Scale of Perceived Social Support (MSPSS), and demographic questionnaires. Associations were analyzed using independent t-test, Pearson correlation, and linear regression. Results: Bivariate analysis showed that higher MHM scores were significantly associated with older age, older age at menarche, higher education level, longer menstrual cycles, employment, higher family income, and urban residence. In contrast, a history of dysmenorrhea was negatively associated with MHM scores. Linear regression analysis revealed that menstrual cycle length was a significant positive predictor of MHM, while a history of dysmenorrhea was a significant negative predictor. Conclusion: Menstrual hygiene management was generally good among adolescents. Significant determinants included menstrual cycle length and history of dysmenorrhea. These findings underscore the importance of addressing biological and physiological factors in menstrual health education. Public health programs should integrate menstrual cycle education and dysmenorrhea management strategies to improve hygiene practices.

Abstract

Pre-marital sexual behavior in adolescents can influence developmental tasks and increase risky behaviors such as unwanted pregnancies and sexually transmitted infections. Social media, gadget influence, and inappropriate peer selection play a role in these occurrences. Peer education models through counselling centers in schools are crucial in providing insights and experiences for better and healthier behavior. Telehealth models serve as an educational method that can reduce pre-marital sexual behavior by providing information on reproductive health and preventing pre-marital sexual behavior. The research method used was a comprehensive literature review. A total of 11 articles meeting inclusion criteria were found, utilizing educational media through m-health, WhatsApp groups, videos, and leaflets. Data gathered included insights into sexual diseases, positive attitudes towards change, adolescent knowledge and interests, education level, gender, self-efficacy, general health status, socioeconomic status, living conditions, healthcare facilities, and marital status. Clinical practice implications through peer education can enhance adolescent knowledge, thus potentially reducing premarital sexual relationships and unwanted pregnancies among adolescents. Based on the literature study, the telehealth education model can be further developed using other theoretical models to make its implementation more comprehensive.

Abstract

Introduction: Stunting in Indonesia is a serious health problem, with a prevalence of 24.1%. This condition risks threatening the quality of life of the nation's next generation due to linear growth disorders caused by malnutrition and inadequate nutritional intake. One of the main causes of high stunting rates is the lack of maternal knowledge about stunting itself. Therefore, increasing mothers' knowledge about stunting is very necessary, and one of the effective methods is to use visual-based educational media. Objectives: This study aims to analyze the effect of card challenge, a visual-based educational media, on increasing maternal knowledge about stunting. Methods: This study uses a quasi-experimental design with a one group pre-post test design method. The sample used in this study is 50 mothers who have toddlers. Before and after the intervention in the form of card challenge, mothers' knowledge of stunting was measured and analyzed using the Wilcoxon Signed Rank Test statistical test to assess significant changes. Results: The results showed that there was a significant increase in maternal knowledge after being given a card challenge game with a value of p = 0.000 (p < 0.05). This indicates that the intervention using card challenge games has succeeded in significantly increasing mothers' understanding of stunting. Conclusions: Card challenge games have proven to be effective in increasing mothers' knowledge about stunting, providing a positive impact on stunting prevention efforts. This study emphasizes the importance of a creative approach in health education that can be accepted and applied by the wider community, especially for mothers with toddlers. This intervention is expected to be a broader model in accelerating the reduction of stunting rates in Indonesia.
