Abstract

This study has three primary objectives: (a) to examine the individual contributions of predictors to reading comprehension; (b) to explore the combined influence of multiple factors on reading comprehension (c) to identify which predictors have a significant impact on reading comprehension. Conducted at SMA Negeri 1 Gu, Central Buton Regency, this research employed a quantitative approach to assess both the individual and collective effects of various factors on reading comprehension among 151 twelfth-grade students. Regression analysis was utilized to gauge the extent of these factors' impact. The findings indicate that schema variables significantly affect reading comprehension, as evidenced by a significance value (sig) of 0.000, surpassing the threshold of 0.005, along with a t-test value of -14.339, exceeding the critical t-table value of 1.9763. Similarly, there is a notable relationship between reading motivation variables and reading comprehension, with a sig value of 0.000 and a t-test value of 5.965, both exceeding the respective thresholds. These outcomes offer valuable insights for educators, suggesting avenues for enhancing students' reading comprehension through tailored instructional strategies aligned with their individual abilities.

Abstract

This study examines the effect of picture series, a visual media consisting of sequential images, on the writing achievement of VIII graders at SMPN 2 Sampara, considering gender and learning mode (WhatsApp vs. Conventional). The research aims to determine if there is a difference in writing outcomes between students using picture series through WhatsApp and those using conventional methods, and to explore the interaction between picture series models and gender. The population consisted of 57 students, divided into a WhatsApp class (28 students) and a conventional class (29 students). Using a quasi-experimental design, the WhatsApp class (VIII2) served as the experimental group, while the conventional class (VIII3) was the control group. Data were collected through pre-test and post-test scores. Findings indicate a significant difference in writing outcomes, with the WhatsApp class outperforming the conventional class. A two-way ANOVA revealed an interaction between picture series models and gender, with a significance value of 0.000 < 0.05, indicating a notable interaction. The Estimated Marginal Means graph showed intersecting lines, further supporting this interaction. Additionally, no significant difference was found in writing outcomes for male students between the two methods. However, female students using the WhatsApp method achieved higher scores than their male counterparts.

Abstract

The fast development of science and technology has brought about changes in human life. This applies to all aspects of life including education. In the field of education, teachers are demanded to adjust to the development that they can no longer be dependent just on their textbooks or course books, if they want their teaching to be motivating and successful. They need to be updated with the current development of technology and be creative and innovative in their teaching, hence, need to be technology-literate. Learning interactions no longer take place only in the real, but also in virtual classroom, especially due to Covid-19 pandemic. This paper justifies that Powtoon is a good choice for a teacher because it is not only an application to be used to video-animate teaching materials, but also as a teaching media by which materials can be interestingly presented to keep students learning from home during the pandemic of Covid-19. Moreover, it is also a Learning Management System which a teacher can use to create a virtual classroom.  Keywords:Powtoon; Learning Material; Learning from Home; Covid 19 Pandemic

Abstract

This study aimed to investigate the impact of group (Comic Webtoon class and Conventional class) and gender (male and female) on reading comprehension among Class X IPA students at SMAN 2 Baubau. The sample comprised 72 students from Class X IPA 1 and Class X IPA 2, selected via purposive sampling. Data on reading comprehension were gathered using a 40-item multiple-choice test. Analysis employed descriptive statistics and two-way ANOVA. Results showed no significant main effect of groups on reading comprehension (p = 0.367 > 0.05), while a significant main effect of gender was observed (p = 0.00 < 0.05). Furthermore, an interaction effect of gender and groups on reading comprehension was found (p = 0.02 < 0.05). These findings underscore the need for educators to tailor reading materials and instructional methods based on gender differences and emphasize the importance of selecting appropriate reading media to enhance students' comprehension of diverse texts.

Abstract

Research evidence shows that communicating and interacting with native speakers could boost students’ self-confidence in their language proficiency. If this claim proves to be veritable, students who have the experience communicating and interacting with native speakers, either online or offline, would expectedly feel more confident than those who do not. The present study sought to examine whether significant differences existed in the selfconfidence level of EFL (English as a Foreign Language) learners who (a) had the experience communicating with native English speakers and who did not; (b) had the intention to communicate with native English speakers and who did not; (c) were males and females, and (d) who were in different academic years (year 1, year 2, and year 3 respectively). Independent samples t-test revealed that, whereas males and females were equally confident, learners who had the experience interacting, or who had the intention communicating, with native English speakers were significantly more confident in their English language proficiency than those who had never interacted, or who did not have the intention to communicate, with native English speakers. No significant differences were observed based on year of enrollment. Implications of this study on the English language teaching and learning will be critically discussed in this paper.
