Abstract

Objectives of this study were to analyze types of polysemy in the and to interpret polysemous words realized in the Frozen movie script. A method of this study was qualitative that produced descriptive data. The data were words that contained polysemy. A source of data in the study was Frozen (2013) movie scripts. The data were analyzed using suitable theories, including the type of polysemy proposed by Apresjan (1974) and meaning proposed by Lyons (1981). Based on the analysis, it was found that there are 26 pairs of data of polysemy that consist of two types of polysemy; 20 pairs of data are regular polysemy and six pairs of data were irregular polysemy. In the Frozen movie script, regular polysemy is more dominant than irregular polysemy because regular polysemy has the same systematic word but is different semantically or non-synonymous. Meanwhile, irregular polysemy has the same or true meaning as other words, and even it has no systematic relation. In conclusion, polysemy can arise in spoken or written language, so that the ambiguous word that have more than one meaning are categorized into polysemy.  Keywords: polysemy, meaning, frozen, movie script, semantics

Abstract

This research explores semiotic analysis by focusing on the trichotomy of object including icon, index, and symbol found in the Free Palestine campaign posters, emphasizing their role in conveying messages in visual media about the campaign. The visual media are posters that effectively disseminate information and mobilize support through social media platforms. This research uses a qualitative method, by analyzing five selected posters taken from the pinterest platform that reflect the campaign theme. Using Charles Sanders Peirce's trichotomy of object regarding icons, indexes, and symbols, this analysis reveals how each poster uses different visual elements to communicate a comprehensive narrative. The analysis showed that of the five posters studied, a total of 9 icons, 8 indexes, and 7 symbols were identified. The conclusion of this study shows that the combination of visual representations and symbolic meanings in the posters serves not only as a communication tool, but also as a powerful act of support for the liberation of Palestine. Abstract

This study examines the kind and purpose of code-switching and code-mixing in the video of The Indah G Show called “Indonesia’s Academic Dishonesty (‘Joki’), Lack of Merit & Moral Integrity ft. Abigail Limuria (WIUI)”. The data was obtained by selecting statements made by speakers in different instances of the video and transcribing them, followed by a qualitative analysis. The transcription was used as the primary tool, and the analysis was based on the frameworks introduced in Muysken (2000), Poplack (2001), Bullock, Toribio (2009), and Fromkin, Rodman, & Hyams (2014) that considered code-switching and other types of code-mixing as a stratified linguistic strategy that appeared under the influence of context, identity, and meaning. In the seizure of 30 cases of code-switching (15 intra-sentential, 10 inter-sentential, and 5 tag-switching) and 26 cases of code-mixing (12 insertion, 8 alternation, and 6 congruent lexicalization) were found. Such patterns are indications of bilingual proficiency of the speakers as well as the strategic mixing of both English and Indonesian. The reasons are that English is spoken to achieve global or academic clarity, whereas Indonesian provides local cultural coloring and emotional expressivity. By such bilingual acts, the speakers express multilayered meanings, establish a rapport with various groups of people, and reflect their hybrid identities. The present research study shows that linguistic alternations in Indonesian-English dialogical practice not only transfer information through their use, but also entail their social and cultural positioning.

Abstract

This study aims to examine the types and functions of impoliteness strategies used by D’Amelio family in The D’Amelio Show Season 3. This research used a qualitative-descriptive method to provide an in-depth analysis. The data were selected using purposive sampling of 10 episodes from season 3 of The D’Amelio Show.  The data were transcribed verbatim and analyzed using Culpeper’s framework (1996; 2011). The results analyzed 22 utterances to five impoliteness strategies: bald on record, positive, negative, sarcasm/mock politeness, and withhold politeness. Negative impoliteness was found to be the most frequently used impoliteness strategy (40.91%), while bald on record impoliteness and withhold politeness were the least frequent (4.55%). In terms of function, three functions were examined: affective, coercive, and entertaining. It was found that the affective function was widely used (50.0%).  The use of impoliteness reflects social dynamics within families, suggesting that impoliteness is not merely a verbal attack but also a means of expressing emotions, displays of intimacy, and interpersonal conflict. This also depends heavily on the context and the relationship between speakers. These findings contribute to a deeper understanding of impoliteness in mediated interpersonal communication and provide insights for further research in similar contexts.

Abstract

Positive politeness is a pragmatic strategy used to protect the hearer’s positive face while fostering solidarity, mutual respect, and interpersonal rapport during interaction. Grounded in Brown and Levinson’s (1978) politeness theory, this study investigates the types and functions of positive politeness strategies employed in the YouTube podcast episode I Have Dissociative Identity Disorder published by the MedCircle channel. The episode was selected because it discusses the sensitive topic of Dissociative Identity Disorder (DID), a complex mental health condition that requires careful and empathetic communication. This study employed a qualitative discourse analysis approach. The data consisted of utterances produced by the host, the guest speaker, and the guest speaker’s alternate identities. The analysis identified 134 instances of positive politeness strategies. The most frequently used strategy was presupposing, asserting, or raising common ground (75 occurrences), whereas asserting or presupposing the speaker’s knowledge of the hearer’s wants and giving or asking for reasons each occurred only once. Four strategies—using in-group identity markers, offering, promising, being optimistic, and assuming reciprocity—were absent. Overall, the findings demonstrate that speakers predominantly relied on establishing common ground, expressing interest, and seeking agreement to facilitate supportive and empathetic communication when discussing sensitive mental health issues.

Abstract

This study examines how sound design contributes to the construction of conflict and tension in World War Z (2013). Rather than functioning merely as an accompanying cinematic element, sound design serves as a narrative mechanism that shapes audience perception, emotional engagement, and spatial awareness throughout the film. This research employed a descriptive qualitative approach using textual film analysis. Twenty scenes were purposively selected based on the presence of dominant sound design elements including voice, music, sound effects, silence, and spatial sound and their direct contribution to the development of narrative conflict and tension. The analysis was conducted through thematic coding and interpreted using film sound theories proposed by Bordwell et al. (2019) and Petrie and Boggs (2018). The findings reveal four principal narrative functions of sound design. First, auditory cues trigger narrative disruption by prompting audiences to anticipate conflict before it becomes visually apparent. Second, dense and overlapping sound layers represent the collapse of social order while increasing emotional intensity and narrative immersion during outbreak sequences. Third, deliberate silence generates psychological tension by directing audience attention toward uncertainty and anticipation. Fourth, spatial sound constructs invisible threats through off-screen and directional audio, encouraging viewers to perceive danger beyond the visual frame and strengthening suspense. Collectively, these auditory strategies influence audience cognition, emotional responses, and engagement with the film's narrative progression. This study concludes that sound design in World War Z (2013) acts as a storytelling system that systematically constructs conflict, tension, and cinematic experience rather than functioning solely as a technical or aesthetic feature. The findings contribute to film studies by demonstrating the narrative significance of sound design and by integrating film sound theory with literary narrative analysis. In addition, the study offers practical insights for filmmakers, sound designers, and future researchers seeking to understand how auditory elements can enhance cinematic storytelling and audience immersion.

Abstract

Face management plays an important role in interview interaction, especially when speakers need to maintain their public image in challenging situations. Previous studies have examined Face-Threatening Acts (FTAs) and politeness strategies in different interview settings. However, little attention has been paid to how FTAs and mitigation strategies develop as speakers experience increasing physical discomfort. The YouTube talk show Hot Ones provides a unique setting in which guests answer interview questions while eating increasingly spicy food. This study examines the types of FTAs and the mitigation strategies used by the host and guests in three Hot Ones episodes featuring Ariana Grande, MrBeast, and Jennie. Using qualitative discourse analysis based on Brown and Levinson's politeness theory, the study analysed 37 FTAs. The findings show that positive-face threats were much more common (33 cases) than negative-face threats (4 cases). Positive politeness was the most frequently used mitigation strategy, followed by off-record, negative politeness, and bald-on-record. Although all bald-on-record strategies occurred during the final stage of the challenge, positive politeness remained the dominant strategy throughout the interviews. The findings also show that physical discomfort forms part of the interactional context in which speakers negotiate face, but it does not determine their pragmatic choices. This study extends research on face management by showing how embodied experience and digitally mediated interaction shape face negotiation in entertainment interviews.
