Abstract

North Sumatra has become an interesting political battleground, particularly between the Bobby Nasution-Surya and Edy Rahmayadi-Hasan Basri candidate pairs, ahead of the 2024 regional elections.  This paper explores these political dynamics through a qualitative descriptive approach, utilizing in-depth interviews with political observers and potential voters, as well as document analysis to collect primary and secondary data. Thematic analysis was applied to identify patterns in issue management strategies. The research reveals the key issues that influence people's preferences, such as infrastructure development, public services, and health. The findings show an increase in community engagement, especially among the younger generation, who are becoming more critical in their choices. Inclusive and transparent communication strategies are key to building public trust, while social media plays an important role in shaping perceptions of candidates, despite the challenges of disinformation. The conclusion of this study emphasizes the importance of strategy adaptation by candidate pairs to meet public expectations and drive the desired positive change in North Sumatra.

Abstract

This research reveals that both candidates in the 2019 Presidential Election engaged in Islamic populist movements in an attempt to garner sympathy and increase their respective electability. The symbolic convergence of Prabowo's campaign is evident in the institutional nature of the fantasy theme woven by his team, with actions that signify the fundamentalism of Prabowo's camp. In contrast, the fantasy theme constructed by Jokowi's team is notably moderate, as exemplified by the phrase "Jokowi Loves Santri," which gave rise to the narrative that Jokowi is a moderate figure. Consequently, a shared rhetorical vision was formed, positioning Jokowi as a moderate individual, with his disseminators acting more individually, unlike Prabowo's camp, which often coalitions with Islamic mass bases.

Abstract

The relationship between the media and political actors will be seen from the intensity of the coverage, the closeness that has the potential to give birth to exclusivity, the availability of more opportunities for media coverage. This is difficult to ignore in the era of democratic parties. Political actors and the media may have a special relationship that can influence the news. As we know, MetroTV and Surya Paloh are two inseparable things. This research aims to analyze the hierarchy of influence in MetroTV's editorial policy on the coverage of the 2024 presidential election. This research uses a descriptive qualitative approach, taking primary data from interviews and documentation, as well as secondary data from literature that has relevance to this research. Researchers have found three hierarchical levels of influence that affect MetroTV's editorial policy, namely the organization level, media routine level and extra media level. In addition, MetroTV's ideology of national principles and knowledge to elevate is not strong enough to influence the editorial policy of the 2024 presidential election news on MetroTV
