Abstract

Mosques serve not only as places of worship but also as centers of social activity for Muslim communities. However, many mosques in Indonesia still fall short in meeting accessibility standards for vulnerable groups such as the elderly, persons with disabilities, and individuals with special needs. According to Statistics Indonesia (BPS, 2022), there are more than 22 million people with disabilities in the country. This study highlights the importance of applying the Universal Design concept in mosque architecture to create inclusive, safe, and comfortable worship spaces for all. Referring to the seven principles of Universal Design, the study evaluates their implementation in three mosques in Indonesia—Al Mujahidin Mosque in Bandar Lampung, Baitus Shobur Mosque in Tulang Bawang Barat, and Sudalmiyah Rais Mosque in Surakarta. Using a qualitative descriptive method and comparative analysis, this research reveals the strengths, weaknesses, and challenges in realizing mosque designs that are accessible to everyone. The findings aim to serve as a foundation for developing more inclusive mosques in the future. Keywords: Mosque, Universal Design, accessibility, inclusive architecture, disability.

Abstract

Abstract: The lack of Public Open Spaces (POS) in Bandar Lampung is still a fundamental challenge in achieving sustainable urban development. The city also shows a polycentric pattern, where various activity centers grow in different districts, but this is not yet supported by proper planning or spatial integration. At the same time, understanding how communities actually use urban spaces is important to see how these areas function in everyday life. This study aims to develop a concept for urban nodes in Bandar Lampung that is adaptive, integrated, and responsive by considering community behavior. The methods used include mapping observations (to identify activity center points) and questionnaires (to understand user behavior in POS). The results show that among the four districts studied, Enggal District has the strongest potential to serve as a primary node that can integrate other surrounding nodes. Keyword: Public Open Space, Urban Nodes, Community Behavior, Integrated Development Abstrak: Keterbatasan Ruang Terbuka Publik (RTP) di Kota Bandar Lampung masih menjadi isu mendasar dalam pengembangan perkotaan yang berkelanjutan. Selain itu, struktur ruang Kota Bandar Lampung menunjukkan kecenderungan perkembangan pusat kegiatan yang bersifat polisentrik, dengan sebaran aktivitas di berbagai kecamatan, namun belum diimbangi oleh sistem perencanaan dan integrasi spasial yang memadai. Di sisi lain, aktivitas komunitas di ruang kota penting untuk diketahui dan dipahami untuk mendapatkan perspektif bagaimana ruang digunakan oleh masyarakat secara nyata. Tujuan penelitian ini yaitu untuk dapat merumuskan konsep pengembangan pusat kegiatan atau nodes di Bandar Lampung yang adaptif, terintegrasi, dan responsif dengan mempertimbangkan perilaku komunitas disekitarnya. Metode yang digunakan yaitu observasi pemetaan (titik-titik pusat kegiatan) dan kueisioner (perilaku pengguna RTP). Adapun hasil nya memperlihatkan bahwa dari empat kecamatan yang ada di Bandar lampung, Kecamatan Enggal mempunyai potensi untuk menjadi node primer yang dapat mengintegrasikan node node lain disekitarnya.
