Abstract

Perlakuan yang digunakan terdiri atas P1(-): Kelobot jagung tanpa penambahan aditif; P2(-): Kelobot jagung + 5% dedak padi; P3: Kelobot jagung + tannin chestnut 0.5%, P4: Kelobot jagung + tannin chestnut 1%, P5: Kelobot jagung + tannin chestnut 1.5%.

Abstract

This study aimed to evaluate the addition of rejected commercial syrup on the physical quality of silage made from elephant grass and fresh tofu dregs. The making process and harvesting of silage were conducted out at the Laboratory of Nutrition and Feed Technology, Faculty of Agriculture and Animal Husbandry, UIN Suska Riau. The ingredients used were elephant grass, fresh tofu dregs, and commercial syrup. Completely Randomized Design (CRD) consisting of 3 treatments and 7 replications was used in this study. The treatments in this study were P1: elephant grass + fresh tofu dregs, P2: P1 + 5% commercial syrup, and P3: P1 + 10% commercial syrup. Variable observed were dry matter loss, temperature, pH, color, texture, aroma, and fungal growth. The data obtained were analyzed based on analysis of variance, and if there was a significant effect between treatments, then it was followed by Duncan's test at 5% level. The results of this study that the addition of rejected commercial syrup had a significant effect (p<0.05) on dry matter loss, pH, color, texture, and aroma, while temperature and fungal growth were not significant. Silage dry matter loss was in the range of 5.83%-7.61%, silage temperature under normal conditions was 28.7°C -29.6°C, silage pH was within normal limits of 3.61-3.95, silage color followed the color of the commercial syrup used, the aroma was typical of silage to fresh, the texture of the silage was medium to fine, and was not overgrown with fungus. Increasing the level of addition of rejected commercial syrup showed a decrease in the pH value and dry matter loss was better than the control. Based on the results of this study, it could be concluded that the addition of commercial syrup at the level of 10% BK could improve the physical characteristics of silage made from elephant grass and fresh tofu dregs which were stored for 30 days. Key words: elephant grass, silage, syrup, tofu dregs

Abstract

This study aimed to examine the molasses addition as a glucose source in the process of elephant grass silage. A completely randomized design consisting of five treatments and five replications was used in this study. The treatments were P1: elephant grass (EG) as control, P2: EG + 2.5% molasses, P3: EG + 5% molasses, P4: EG + 7.5% molasses and P5: EG + 10% molasses based on dry matter. All the treatments were ensiled for 30 days. The parameters included physical quality were aroma, mold growth, texture while the chemical quality parameters were pH, dry matter, dry matter loss, and fleigh value. The data were analyzed for variance and if there were differences between treatments, the Duncan's test was conducted at the 5% level. The results showed that 10% molasses addition had a significant effect (p<0.05) on the physical and chemical qualities of elephant grass silage. The elephant grass silage had a distinctive fermented aroma, no fungi, smooth texture, no clump, and brownish-green color following the molasses color. The pH of elephant grass silage was 3.37-4.52, the silage dry matter was around 27.5%-32.5%, the dry matter loss was around 2.76%-6.73%, while the fleigh value was around 79.2-135. It could be concluded that molasses could be used as a stimulant additive to ensilage elephant grass. Key words: dry matter loss, elephant grass, fungal growth, fleigh value, molasses, pH, silage

Abstract

Abstract

Sago waste can be used as a substitute for carbohydrate feed sources but is constrained by the high content of crude fiber and low crude protein. Pretreatment with fermentation treatment is expected to improve the physical quality of silage. This study aimed to determine the addition of different concentrations of cattle’s rumen liquid on the physical quality and pH of sago waste silage. The research design used a Completely Randomized Design with 4 treatments and 4 replications. Each treatment included: T0 = sago waste + 0% cattle’s rumen liquid; T1 = sago waste + 2% cattle’s rumen liquid; T2 = sago waste + 4% cattle’s rumen liquid; T3 = sago waste + 6% cattle’s rumen liquid. The result showed the physical quality (color, aroma, and texture) was very significant (P<0.01) influenced by the addition of different concentrations of cattle’s rumen liquid, and the pH of silage was not significant (P>0.05) effect. Sago waste silage which was the addition of 6% cattle’s rumen liquid gave the best physical quality, judged by light brown color (3.518 ± 0.02), the distinctive aroma of silage (3.61 ± 0.04), dense texture, crumbly, and not slimy (3.58 ± 0.02), as well acidic pH (4.40 ± 0.18).
