Abstract

The research aimed to evaluate the onset of estrus, conception rate, pregnancy rate and duration of estrus in Bali cow, limousine cow and rambon cow after being administered with three different hormones to syncrhronize estrus. A randomized block design with two factors, type of cow and hormone dose, was performed. Fifty-four postpartum cows consisted of the three breeds were administered to a single dose of PGF2α (5 ml per cow), a double dose of PGF2α (10 ml per cow) and combination of PGF2α and hCG (1,500 IU per cow). An analysis of variance showed that different breeds did not associate with the hormone doses and their combination, as evident from the onset of estrus, duration of estrus, conception rates and service per conception. However, different cow breeds showed the same onset of estrus, service per conception and the different onset of estrus and pregnancy rates. On the other hand, different doses of PGF2α and its combination with hCG generated different onset of estrus, duration of estrus, and pregnancy rates, but shared common service per conception. In conclusion, Bali cow demonstrated a more appropriate fertility than Limousin cow and Rambon cow. A combination of PGF2α and hCG showed the most adequate hormonal treatment to synchronize the estrus compared to single and double doses of PGF2α.

Abstract

Christmas palm is a plant that has high economic value as an ornamental plant and is in great demand. Christmas palm seeds begin to germinate 3-4 weeks after planting, slow germination because of to seeds experiencing physical dormancy. To break dormancy can be done by scarification and immersion GA3. The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of scarification and GA3 on the germination and growth of christmas palm seedlings and the interaction between the two treatments. This research was carried out from December 2017 to March 2018 on experimental Field and Agronomy Laboratory Faculty of Agriculture and Animal Science State Islamic University Sultan Syarif Kasim Riau. The method used Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) with two factors and four replications. The first factor was the scarification (control and with scarification) and the second factor is immersion GA3 (0 ppm, 150 ppm, 300 ppm and 450 ppm). The results showed that scarification by means of sandpaper can increase the growth rate and height of the christmas palm plant. The dipping of GA3 with concentration of 450 ppm for 2 hours is the best concentration for growth speed. There was no interaction between scarification and GA3 immersion on all observational parameters both in germination and in the nursery of chritmas palm plants on the land.

Abstract

This study aimed to examine the molasses addition as a glucose source in the process of elephant grass silage. A completely randomized design consisting of five treatments and five replications was used in this study. The treatments were P1: elephant grass (EG) as control, P2: EG + 2.5% molasses, P3: EG + 5% molasses, P4: EG + 7.5% molasses and P5: EG + 10% molasses based on dry matter. All the treatments were ensiled for 30 days. The parameters included physical quality were aroma, mold growth, texture while the chemical quality parameters were pH, dry matter, dry matter loss, and fleigh value. The data were analyzed for variance and if there were differences between treatments, the Duncan's test was conducted at the 5% level. The results showed that 10% molasses addition had a significant effect (p<0.05) on the physical and chemical qualities of elephant grass silage. The elephant grass silage had a distinctive fermented aroma, no fungi, smooth texture, no clump, and brownish-green color following the molasses color. The pH of elephant grass silage was 3.37-4.52, the silage dry matter was around 27.5%-32.5%, the dry matter loss was around 2.76%-6.73%, while the fleigh value was around 79.2-135. It could be concluded that molasses could be used as a stimulant additive to ensilage elephant grass. Key words: dry matter loss, elephant grass, fungal growth, fleigh value, molasses, pH, silage
