Abstract

Jawi script plays a significant role in the dissemination of knowledge and Malay culture, but it continues to be marginalized, including among the Malays themselves. However, a number of efforts to preserve the script are still ongoing in Aceh, Indonesia. This study aimed to examine the efforts and was conducted in Banda Aceh and Aceh Besar, two essential regions in Aceh. The data for this descriptive qualitative study was obtained through observation for three months and semi-structured interviews with nine teachers of dayah (an Islamic educational institution in Aceh) and three government officers. The data were then transcribed and analyzed in three steps, namely data condensation, data display, and data conclusion. The results of data analysis show that the preservation of the Jawi script in Aceh involves two parties, namely the the dayah community and government. The government plays a role in making regulations and policies while the community is involved in the process of using and learning the book written in Jawi script. However, the role of the community is considered more dominant and substantial in preserving the script. The preservation of the Jawi script by the Dayah community is carried out through a series of teachings of Arabic-Jawi books to the people of Aceh both in mosques, in the Dayah and other locations agreed upon by the local community.

Abstract

This study discusses the existence of Pendidikan Diniyah Formal (PDF) in Islamic boarding schools in Aceh as a form of Islamic education development integrated with the national formal education system. Pendidikan Diniyah Formal was established as an effort to preserve the intellectual tradition of pesantren through the study of classical Islamic texts (kitab kuning) while also providing formal legal recognition for pesantren graduates. This study aims to analyze the existence of Pendidikan Diniyah Formal in Aceh, its institutional development, and the factors that support and hinder its implementation in Islamic boarding schools. The study employed a qualitative approach using documentation studies, and interviews with parties involved in the implementation of Pendidikan Diniyah Formal in Aceh. The findings reveal that by 2023 there were 15 Pendidikan Diniyah Formal institutions spread across several regencies and cities in Aceh at the Wustha and Ulya levels. The existence of PDF demonstrates the transformation of dayah education through the integration of traditional salafiyah Islamic education with the modern formal education system without eliminating the identity of pesantren. Pendidikan Diniyah Formal  also contributes to improving the quality of dayah education through a structured curriculum, diploma legality, and the strengthening of students’ religious competencies. However, the development of PDF in Aceh still faces several challenges, including limited socialization, inadequate human resources, insufficient supporting facilities, and the lack of understanding among some dayah leaders regarding the legality and system of Pendidikan Diniyah Formal. Therefore, government support, increased socialization, and stronger collaboration among pesantren are needed to expand and strengthen the existence of Pendidikan Diniyah Formal  in Aceh.

Abstract

Globally, there is a recognized need to develop resilient, culture-based educational models that effectively integrate traditional values with modern challenges. This study aimed to analyze the relationship between cultural elements and the educational system in Acehnese dayah (traditional Islamic boarding schools) by employing a holistic-integrative approach. Data were collected through observation, in-depth interviews, and document analysis at two major dayah in Aceh: Dayah Babussalam Al-Hanafiyyah and Dayah MUDI Mesra Samalanga. Findings reveal that the dayah educational system is intricately linked to seven cultural elements (e.g., knowledge, social organization, religion), forming a unique educational ecosystem. Key mechanisms, including the halaqah method, the use of classical Islamic texts (kitab kuning), and spiritual arts (zikir), facilitate the transmission of religious, social, and spiritual identity. This system both preserves classical Islamic values and demonstrates gradual adaptation to modernity. Islamic education in Acehnese dayah represents a resilient, culture-based learning model that successfully cultivates religious understanding alongside social and spiritual identity. This research offers a robust reference for contextual development of Islamic education, showing how traditional models can be strengthened by integrating local culture while effectively responding to modernization without abandoning their foundational roots.
