Abstract

This research aims to visualize research trends regarding the relationship between Artificial Intelligence (AI) and the human brain through bibliometric analysis. Data was obtained from the Scopus database of 1424 documents from 1983-2024. The results of this research found that artificial intelligence and the brain have developed increasingly rapidly in recent years along with technological developments. A better understanding of the distribution and trends of this research will hopefully reveal key concepts that support the development of AI and its impact on the human brain.

Abstract

Performance pressure and caffeine consumption, a common combination in daily life, have both been shown to affect cognitive performance. However, previous research has not fully elucidated the extent to which the effects of caffeine and performance pressure impact cognitive function, especially working memory. This study aims to examine the possibility that caffeine can enhance working memory performance under pressure. A total of 61 participants aged 18 to 32 participated, divided into four groups. Experiment-based data collection was conducted with a single-blind design. Working memory was measured by Modular Arithmetic Tasks with the OpenSesame program. All participants were asked to perform arithmetic tasks and arousal levels were measured using the Galvanic Skin Response (GSR). The findings revealed no evidence of an interaction effect of caffeine intake and performance pressure on working memory (F= .632, p= .431,hp2= .012). Given the prevalence of caffeine intake prior to facing high-pressure situations, the consumption of a cup of coffee does not improve cognitive performance as many would expect. However, caffeine intake had a stabilizing effect on the skin conductance response values during performance under pressure. Clinical psychologists can use a daily dose of caffeine as an alternative intervention or preventative measure to help patients reduce performance pressure-related anxiety.

Abstract

TikTok has a personalized algorithm and is designed with a user-centered approach, which raises concerns about the impact it will have on cognitive function and user behavior. There is a lack of literature that discusses the integration of topics between the impact of TikTok algorithms on cognitive function and user behavior. This study uses the literature review method by collecting and selecting relevant literature from various databases to compile information about the impact of using TikTok on cognitive function and individual behavior in one scientific article. Based on the results of a review of 14 literatures, TikTok has a negative impact on several areas in the brain. The areas affected by using Tiktok are the user's reward system, activation of the default mode network (DMN) and ventral tegmental area (VTA), decreased gray matter volume (GMV) in the amygdala, and affect the hippocampus. Then, the impact of Tiktok on individual behavior includes decreased concentration, impulsivity in making decisions, and addictive behavior. Therefore, the use of TikTok needs to be balanced with awareness of the potential impact behind it and wise choices for its use.

Abstract

The current research aims to determine the effect of (1) the solve its strategy on the ability to solve math story problems moderated by working memory; (2) the solve its strategy on the ability to solve math story problems moderated by inhibitory control; (3) the solve its strategy on the ability to solve math story problems moderated by shifting. This experimental research used an untreated control group design model with a dependent pretest and posttest. Participants in the research were students being 4th-grade elementary school students in the city of Yogyakarta. The ability to solve story problems was measured using the test of mathematical ability (TOMA), the backward digit span task to measure working memory capacity, and the matching familiar figure test to measure inhibitory control and shifting capacity using the Wisconsin card sorting test. Data analysis uses partial least squares (PLS). The research results showed that only the moderating effect of inhibitory control was proven to support the influence of the solve-it strategy on the ability to solve math story problems. Implications for further research are discussed.

Abstract

This study examines gender differences in visual-spatial abilities, focusing on the consistency of these differences and the factors influencing them. The study aims to understand the extent to which gender differences in visual-spatial abilities are consistent and what factors contribute to these differences. Utilizing a Systematic Literature Review (SLR) approach guided by PRISMA, this study synthesizes findings from various previous studies on visual-spatial abilities in men and women. Literature searches were conducted in Scopus, Web of Science, and Taylor & Francis databases, with inclusion criteria covering empirical studies from the past two decades. The selection process yielded 13 primary studies for thematic analysis. Inductive thematic analysis reveals that gender differences in visual-spatial abilities, consistently favoring men, are supported by differences in brain structure and testosterone levels. However, these findings are not entirely absolute, as training and experience show potential for reducing the gender gap in visual-spatial abilities. Cross-cultural studies also suggest that social and cultural contexts influence visual-spatial abilities, regardless of gender. The findings of this study contribute significantly to the literature on gender differences in visual-spatial abilities by strengthening the understanding of biological, social, and educational factors that impact these differences.
