Abstract

This study proposes a novel interdisciplinary framework for validating the Asbab al-nuzul database in Al-Wahidi’s seminal work by utilizing Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL). While the significance of Asbab al-nuzul (occasions of revelation) is paramount for Qur’anic contextualization, traditional hadith transmissions often encounter issues of linguistic ambiguity and structural inconsistency. This research moves beyond a purely quantitative assessment to emphasize the theoretical utility of SFL as a rigorous validation tool. By systematically segmenting transmission events specifically those utilizing formal phrases such as Akhbarana and Haddatsana into discrete categories of speaker, recipient, and content, this approach effectively resolves ambiguities within the chain of narration. Using Surah Al-Baqarah as a case study, the analysis demonstrates how identifying these thematic and interpersonal elements allows for a more reliable verification of hadith integrity. The findings conclude that SFL analysis provides a robust, qualitative framework for clarifying the reliability of asbab al-nuzul transmissions, thereby supporting more accurate thematic exegesis (Mawdlu'i). This study offers a scalable methodology for modern Islamic scholarship, enabling a deeper, linguistically grounded validation of classical religious texts

Abstract

This paper discusses how the Indonesian Sunni Muslim leader Abdurrahman Wahid and the Iranian Shiite Muslim leader Ayatollah Khomeini responded to the debate about the relationship between Islam and the state. Their responses impacted on the struggle of Indonesian and Iranian Muslims in considering the ideological basis of Indonesian and Iranian states. On the one hand, Wahid with his educational and social background and Indonesian political context rejected the concept of an Islamic state. He did not agree with the formalization of Islamic sharia. To implement his idea, he promoted the idea of Pribumisasi Islam. For Wahid, islamization was not arabization. Khomeini, on the other hand, believed that Islam is a religion that has complete laws and way of life including social rules. According to Khomeini, to effectively implement these rules, Muslims need to have executive power. In Khomeini’s view, when the Quran calls for Muslims to obey Allah, the messenger, and ulil amri, this means that Allah instructs Muslims to create an Islamic state. To realise his views, Khomeini proposed the doctrine of Velayat-e al Faqeeh. Thus, different religious-political contexts of these two leaders contributed to their different responses to the relationship between Islam and the state.

Abstract

This article pursues a philosophical reading of the Qur’an’s moral discourse on human freedom and divine sovereignty. Through an ethical close reading of Qur’anic verses and a semantic-conceptual analysis of mashī’ah, istiṭā‘ah, mas’ūliyyah, qadr, qaḍā’, and ‘adl, the study brings the philosophical category of relational freedom as a heuristic to the text, demonstrating that the Qur’an’s conceptual architecture actively enriches it. Methodologically, the inquiry draws on Abou El Fadl’s negotiative hermeneutics to navigate the author-text-reader dialectic and to assess the ethical stakes of competing interpretations. The findings establish that the Qur’an presupposes genuine moral agency through its idioms of non-coercion, taklīf, ḥisāb, and the moral evaluation of intention, while situating this agency within a divinely ordered structure of measure and decree grounded in ‘adl. Qadr is construed as a principle of causal measurability, and qaḍā’ as the moment of decisive actualization. The reading rejects predestination as a moral alibi while refusing to inflate human agency into a sovereignty that fractures the tawḥīdic horizon. This study contributes a philosophically rigorous framework for reading Qur’anic moral theology beyond the fatalism-autonomy impasse, and opens a constructive dialogue between Islamic moral thought and contemporary philosophy of agency that neither domesticates the Qur’anic account nor insulates it from critical engagement.
