Abstract

Critical thinking is an ability that students must have in 21st-century learning, especially in science learning. This research aims to analyze the application of the socio-scientific issue approach to improving students' critical thinking skills in science learning. The research method used is a systematic literature review. A systematic literature review was carried out on articles following the research objectives. Articles were obtained using https://sinta.kemdikbud.go.id/ and selected based on criteria from Sinta S1-S3 published in January 2016 – December 2022. A review of the articles found five articles that met the research criteria and assessed the quality of the study. The research results can conclude that applying the socio-scientific issue approach can improve students' critical thinking skills in science learning. The material taught to students using a socio-scientific issue approach includes environmental pollution, environmental change materials, biodiversity, and global warming. The socio-scientific issue approach can be applied to various learning models, such as problem-based learning, group investigation, and problem-solving.

Abstract

Critical thinking skills (CTS) are abilities that students must develop and enhance. This tudy aimed to examine the effectiveness of a digital pop-up book in science learning to enhance students CTS. The product was developed using the problem-based learning (PBL) model combined with a socio-scientific issue (SSI) approach, designed to connect science concepts with real-world contexts. The research employed a quasi-experimental method with a non-equivalent control group pretestposttest design, involving eighth-grade students at SMP Negeri 2 Manisrenggo. Data were collected through a critical thinking test consisting of 15 items covering four indicators: analyzing problems, identifying problems, formulating logical ideas, and drawing conclusions. Validation by experts indicated that the product was feasible for classroom use, while teacher and student evaluations confirmed its practicality and readability. The findings revealed that the experimental group achieved a higher average posttest score than the control group, with an N-gain of 0.37 (medium category), compared to 0.19 (low category) in the control group. The most significant improvement was observed in the ability to analyze and identify problems, whereas drawing conclusions showed limited progress. These results demonstrate that digital pop-up book media can serve as an effective learning tool to foster critical thinking by engaging students in authentic issues and collaborative problem-solving. The study suggests broader applications and future exploration of its long-term impact on critical thinking

Abstract

The low scientific literacy of Indonesian students, as reported by PISA and the 2023 ANBK at SMP Negeri 3 Samalantan, is driven by abstract, teacher-centered science instruction on the topic of Pressure. This study aims to develop and evaluate the feasibility, practicality, and effectiveness of an Inquiry Learning-based Electronic Student Worksheet (e-LKPD) to improve students' scientific literacy. This Research and Development (R&D) study applied the ADDIE model. Data were collected using validation sheets, response questionnaires, and OECD-aligned scientific literacy pretests/posttests. The results showed that the e-LKPD is highly feasible based on content (80%), syntax construction (78%), and language (82%) evaluations. It was also deemed highly practical due to interactive multimedia elements that foster independent learning via devices. In the limited-scale trial, the students' average score increased significantly from 36 to 65 ($0.000 < 0.05$). In the large-scale trial, the inquiry e-LKPD group achieved a higher score increase (37.12 to 58.85) than the conventional group (32.14 to 43.33). The MANOVA test ($0.002 < 0.05$) confirmed that integrating structured scientific investigations and real-world phenomena (e.g., submarines and hydraulic brakes) is significantly superior in enhancing scientific reasoning compared to standard methods. In conclusion, this e-LKPD is an effective instructional innovation to transition from passive to active, student-centered learning.
