Abstract

ABSTRACT This study aims to identify and analyze the activities, challenges, social capital and social cohesion of the Community Concerned about Disasters in the village of Tanjung Leban Bengkalis with a qualitative approach. The results of the study show that bonding social capital in MPB activities is in the form of mutual cooperation traditions, activities for making water canals and canal blockings around the residents' gardens. Bridging social capital can be seen from joint activities to revegetate burnt forests with timber plants and plants with economic value such as areca nut and fruits. Linking social capital can be seen from the good relations with institutions inside and outside the village such as the village government. PT. BBHA, Manggala Agni, NGOs, universities, and other institutions that have one goal. Elements of internal and external trust in the group's duties and functions are going well. Likewise with social networks, it can be seen that MPB participates in building networks well, especially at the external level in their work area. The internal norms of the MPB group are strongly intertwined on the basis of personal awareness. A set of rules is established by the MPB for its members, these rules are adhered to even if they are sometimes only verbal. Meanwhile, if there are members who violate the sanctions given are based on deliberative considerations between MPB group members. Social cohesion is created on the basis of a sense of mutual ownership and a common goal of concern in protecting forests and peatlands. Strong social cohesion had a positive impact on MPB institutional performance in reducing the number of forest and peatland fires in Tanjung Leban Village. Abstract

Collective action is important when the activities and costs of restoration cannot all be internalized by the government or when urgent maintenance is required beyond the scope of the restoration project. Collective action can be influenced by social capital. In this study, we examine components of social capital and the factors that affect them. Using key informant interview, household survey, and participant observation, we also identify the extent to which social capital is related to collective action. We found that women farmer groups have high social capital, which has led to strong collective action. Social capital in Dompas’ women groups is characterized by the norms of trust and reciprocity. Strong trust and reciprocity are driven by shared culture and values and supported by kinship. Social capital arises from and is reflected in the interactions between individuals in the group. It is naturally embedded within the community, supported by strong motivation and commitment, primarily to improve the family welfare. The social capital established influenced and drove collective action, which contributes to successful management of the women farmer groups’ action arena. This paper highlights the evidence of social capital and its relation to collective action in a case from restoration in the Global South. We suggest that for a restoration action to successfully mobilize voluntary, active participation from the community, the intervention should be designed with an emphasis on establishing social capital.

Abstract

Abstract: The purpose of this paper is to review community initiatives in dealing with climate change in oil palm plantation areas. We use descriptive qualitative methods as well as apply the participatory Action Research (PAR) method to encourage community action. The results showed that oil palm plantations had a positive impact in the form of improving the community's economy and negative impacts, namely a clean water crisis and erratic hot and rainy weather. Therefore, to anticipate the worsening impact of the existence of oil palm plantations, the community has an initiative by planting medicinal plants, food plants, flowers, carrying out environmental conservation campaigns, making environmentally friendly fertilizers, making biopores, biogas, making gazebos, green houses, giving seeds plants and provision of fish seeds. All these initiatives were strengthened by the support of various parties from the regional government and the Pertamina Hulu Energi Kampar company in the form of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) program support. Abstract

This Study aims to determine the forms of local wisdom of the Akit Tribe fishermen and to find out equipment the Akit tribe fishermen use to catch fish in the Rangsang Pesisir District. The research method used is a qualitative method. Data were collected by observation and in-depth interviews, in addition to of course documentation. The results of the study found that there are several forms of local wisdom related to the activities of fishermen that still exist and live and are used in the life of the fishermen community. The local wisdom referred to include: First, the Bele Laut Ritual, which is an activity that aims to maintain or keep the sea still providing sustenance and safety for fishermen. The second ritual of getting off the boat is when buying a new boat is done as a form of gratitude for the fishermen for the new boat. Third, Determination of time, weather and seasons, the fishermen of the Akit Tribe believe in natural signs, such as when there are many stars at night, tomorrow the weather will be shady and sunny. Then they believed that the cloud that was scaly like fish in the afternoon was a sign that it was fish season.  The meaning of maintaining ecology is when going to sea (netting, splinting) when the catches obtained by fishermen sort the fish, meaning that small fish that are considered unable or less useful are released into the sea. This clearly means that they have thought about the sustainability of animal life (sea) for the future or for their children and grandchildren who will become fishermen. The fishing activities of the Akit Tribe still use simple technology and equipment such as motorboats, oars and nets.

This study used qualitative methods with observational data collection techniques, in-depth interviews and documentation. Data processing techniques used are data reduction, data presentation and data conclusions. The results of the study show that the process of adaptation to the Sundanese ethnic community for each individual will require a different time. One form of integration that exists is mixed marriage, apart from that language differences become an obstacle in communicating with the local community. So it can be concluded that the Sundanese ethnic adaptation process can go well with the surrounding community and the interactions that are established must be maintained so that good relations can run in harmony and peace. Abstract

Nowadays, the phenomenon of people forming ethnic associations among students has become an important focus in social and cultural studies. Toba Batak students are trying to form an association to find friends from their clan overseas. This research aims to find out the basics of Batak students forming punguan in Pekanbaru as well as the meaning that punguan members get from their participation when joining the punguan. The subjects in this study were selected based on criteria previously determined by the author. This research uses descriptive qualitative research methods. The theory used is the social bond theory from Travis Hirschi. The research results that can be concluded in this study are that students formed clan collections in Pekanbaru in order to protect their ethnicity from being lost. The factors of the need for ethnic identity, social support from the surrounding area and awareness of cultural preservation are also reasons for the formation of student fees based on clans in Pekanbaru. Ethnic cohesiveness also maintains unity, closeness and bonds for each member of the punguan. Apart from that, clan levies also produce varied meanings for their members, starting from knowledge of their own clan's speech, getting support in various aspects of life and increasing their network of friends overseas. The conclusion of this research is that the basis for Toba Batak students forming local punguan is so that brotherly ties between clans remain strong and to avoid intermarriage within one clan. The meaning produced by students following the clan punguan is that the traditions of the Batak tribe are still preserved so that they are not eroded by modern times. The routine activities carried out in the punguan also make the bond between each member stronger.
