Abstract

Functional thinking becomes a principle in the process of learning mathematics at school. Even though the need for a review of functional thinking is increasing, until now there has been no systematic literature review discussing what and how to measure functional thinking in mathematics learning. The aim of this study is to analyze the importance of functional thinking in mathematics learning and how to measure functional thinking. The method used in this systematic review study refers to PRISMA. The total articles collected were 5,415,874. Based on the PRISMA steps which consist of Identification, Screening, Eligibility, and Included, 63 articles met the requirements. The results of a review of 63 articles show that there are several things that must be considered in developing functional thinking in learning mathematics such as using open problems, solving realistic problems, using technology, and giving routine and non-routine practice questions. Furthermore, in measuring functional thinking, it can be seen based on the indicators, namely writing the next element based on the previous pattern (recursive pattern), using the relationship between elements to continue the relationship to elements in general (covariational relationship), and stating the relationship between two elements that vary in the form of function rules (correspondence).

Abstract

Self-efficacy is an essential skill that students must develop to excel in mathematics. This study aims to describe students' self-efficacy in solving mathematical literacy-based summative assessment problems. Conducted as qualitative descriptive research, the study employed tests and questionnaires for data collection. The sample of this study consisted of 34 male junior high school students. The data obtained were analyzed using descriptive statistical techniques. The results showed that students' self-efficacy was in the medium category with a percentage of 55.88%, and student learning outcomes based on the students’ mathematical literacy-based summative assessment tests were mostly in the poor category with a percentage of 44.11%. The percentages of students who can formulate, use, and interpret mathematical concepts are 78%, 45%, and 59%, respectively. Consequently, students with high levels of self-efficacy outperform those with intermediate or low levels of mathematical literacy. Medium-level individuals demonstrated superior mathematical literacy abilities compared to students with low self-efficacy. Enhancing self-efficacy in addressing mathematical literacy-based summative assessment challenges is crucial for advancing mathematics education research, enabling educators to implement effective pedagogical strategies, and fostering students’ confidence to approach complex problem-solving tasks.

Abstract

Continuous improvement of mathematics teaching is a continual process. The ground of the improvement is that mathematics is not only studied by students throughout the year but it is also widely used as a key indicator of students’ success. One of the important factors that influence the teaching of mathematics is textbooks. This study discussed mathematics textbooks from two countries, namely Singapore and Japan. The aim was to examine the textbooks’ physical character, structure, and topic/content. The study pointed out several important points. The Singaporean Math Textbook is physically simpler in colour than the Japanese Math Textbook. It also had more pages than the Japanese Textbook. Regarding the book's structure, several chapters in the Singaporean Mathematics Textbook began with a summary of the prerequisite material, followed by key topics, examples and solutions, and exercises. In Japanese Mathematics Textbooks, most chapters started with illustrations on the topics discussed, prerequisite material, essential questions, summaries, examples and solutions, enrichment, and exercises. In the Singaporean secondary school textbooks, it emphasized the Geometry and Measurement domains, while the Japanese secondary school textbooks emphasized the Relation and Algebra domains followed by the Geometry and Measurement domains.

Abstract

The quality of understanding and problem-solving abilities are essential components in mathematics learning. Understanding serves as a foundation for students to comprehend mathematical concepts, while the ability to solve problems allows students to use their knowledge in everyday contexts. The purpose of this study is to explore the relationship between students’ quality of understanding and their problem-solving ability through a systematic literature review. The review focuses on how instrumental and relational understanding influence students’ effectiveness in solving mathematical problems. The search process was conducted using Harzing’s Publish or Perish software with Google Scholar and Scopus as the primary databases, limited to studies published between 2014 and 2025, resulting 30 relevant articles. The findings demonstrate a consistently positive relationship, where relational understanding contributes more strongly to effective and flexible problem-solving than instrumental understanding, especially in non-routine tasks. This review offers a clearer comparison of the relative roles of instrumental and relational understanding in supporting problem-solving, which has not been explicitly emphasized in earlier studies. Additionally, factors such as learning style, prior knowledge, reasoning skills, gender, emotional intelligence, and adversity quotient were identified as complementary influences that shape both understanding and problem-solving performance.
