Abstract

The purpose of this research was to describe the types of code-mixing and the reason for using the code-mixing in social interaction as a sociolinguistic analysis. It employed a descriptive qualitative method through video observation and script analysis that were transcribed from the selected YouTube video. These data collection techniques aimed to collect more information by observing the participant, and the scope that researcher needed to involve in the research. The data collection procedure for this study has been divided into numerous stages. At first, watched the video. Second, created a script by transcribing the utterances. Additionally, filtered out the statements that engaged in code-mixing. In order to make the data systematic and simpler to analyze, and finally arranged it into tables. Based on the findings, it can be concluded that all three types of code-mixing proposed by Hoffmann (2014) were employed, including: intra sentential code-mixing with the 76,47% percentage, 7,35% percentage of intra lexical code-mixing, and involving a change of pronunciation which accounted for 16,17% of the total. Additionally, this study found four reasons of code-mixing; talking about a particular topic, being emphatic or emotional about something, repetition used for clarification, and expressing group character.

Abstract

Tujuan utama penelitian ini adalah untuk mengetahui permasalahan menulis siswa. Penelitian ini menggunakan metode deskriptif kualitatif. Data dikumpulkan dari dokumen teks tulisan siswa. Untuk menganalisis kesalahan noun phrase pada teks analitis eksposisi, peneliti menggunakan analisis dokumen yang diambil dari 9 sampel siswa. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa terdapat 135 kesalahan penulisan frasa kata benda pada teks eksposisi analitis. Kesalahan tersebut meliputi 65 kesalahan pembentukan, 25 kesalahan pengurutan, 25 kesalahan penambahan, dan 20 kesalahan penghilangan. Oleh karena itu, dapat disimpulkan bahwa hasil penelitian ini menyatakan bahwa siswa membuat kesalahan dalam pengejaan dan penempatan kosa kata, sehingga jenis kesalahan yang sering muncul adalah kesalahan informasi dan kesalahan pengurutan. Hal ini disebabkan oleh kecenderungan siswa yang kurang memahami aturan tata bahasa dalam menulis teks. Temuan ini tentu bermanfaat bagi siswa untuk mengidentifikasi beberapa kesalahan umum, sehingga mereka dapat belajar dari kesalahan tersebut dan menghindari atau tidak mengulanginya di masa depan.

Abstract

Kosakata merupakan salah satu masalah dalam pembelajaran bahasa Inggris yang perlu diatasi. Kurangnya kemampuan siswa dalam menguasai kosakata menjadi salah satu masalah dalam pembelajaran bahasa Inggris. Penelitian ini dilakukan untuk mengetahui masalah siswa dalam mempelajari  kosakata bahasa Inggris di SMAN 1 Rancaekek.  Peneliti menggunakan metode deskriptif kualitatif. Kemudian, data dikumpulkan melalui quesioner, wawancara, dan observasi. Selanjutnya, subjek penelitian ini adalah siswa kelas X MIPA 3 SMAN 1  Rancaekek  tahun ajaran 2023/2024 yang terdiri dari 37 siswa. Peneliti mewawancarai enam orang terpilih berdasarkan nilai bahasa Inggris yang mereka dapatkan pada mata pelajaran bahasa Inggris.  Wawancara terdiri dari 7 pertanyaan. Hasil akhir, temuan menunjukkan bahwa ada beberapa jenis masalah yang terdiri  dari kurangnya minat siswa dalam mempelajari bahasa Inggris, kurangnya motivasi siswa, tidak memahami grammar dan pengucapan, malas menghafal kosakata, dan  fasilitas pembelajaran  yang kurang mendukung. Oleh karena itu, pentingnya pembelajaran kosakata karena menjadi komponen yang paling penting sebelum ke aspek-aspek lainnya dalam pembelajaran bahasa Inggris.

Abstract

This research aims to determine teachers’ perception in implementing Merdeka Curriculum. This research uses a qualitative descriptive method by distributing questionnaire and conducting semi-structured interviews. This research was conducted at SMA 1 Rancaekek. The participants in this study were four English teachers who had experience in teaching English using Merdeka Curriculum.  The results both from questionnaire and interview show that English teachers had positive perceptions of the implementing the Merdeka Curriculum. The data results from the questionnaire which were supported by interview are divided into 5 indicators. First, launch of Merdeka Curriculum. Second, Merdeka Curriculum priority stage. Third, design principles and implementation mechanism of Merdeka Curriculum. Fourth, direction of change in Merdeka Curriculum. Fifth, structure and framework of Merdeka Curriculum. Therefore, in implementing learning in the classroom, teachers are free to design their own methods and strategies. Even though English teachers have positive perceptions, in practice they still need to adapt to this new policy as they said from the interview results.

Abstract

Dalam dunia akademik, keterampilan menulis karya ilmiah merupakan salah satu kemampuan penting yang harus dikuasai oleh mahasiswa. Salah satu komponen utama dalam penulisan akademik adalah penyusunan referensi dan bibliografi. Penelitian ini berfokus pada pemberian pelatihan kepada mahasiswa tentang cara menggunakan alat pengelola referensi, yaitu Zotero, untuk mendukung kualitas penulisan akademik mereka dengan mengadakan pelatihan untuk mahasiswa tingkat universitas pada tahun pertama studi mereka. Pengabdian ini dilakukan di sebuah asrama yang dikembangkan oleh salah satu universitas di Bandung. Peserta penelitian ini adalah 21 mahasiswa dari berbagai jurusan. Setelah mengikuti kegiatan ini, mahasiswa diminta untuk mengisi formulir evaluasi untuk mendapatkan masukan mengenai pelatihan dalam bentuk kuisioner. Hasil dari kuisioner dihitung secara manual menggunakan metode analisis kualitatif sederhana untuk menginterpretasikan respon peserta. Hasilnya menunjukkan bahwa mahasiswa memberikan respon positif terhadap pelatihan ini. Hal ini dapat dilihat dari semua indikator dalam kuisioner yang mendapatkan hasil tinggi, termasuk pemahaman materi, keterampilan praktis, dan kepuasan mereka terhadap penyelenggaraan acara pelatihan. Dengan demikian, diharapkan mahasiswa akan semakin terbiasa menggunakan teknologi untuk meningkatkan kualitas penulisan akademik mereka

Abstract

This study tried to analyze the vocabulary learning strategies employed by students. This study employed qualitative descriptive method, involving the distribution of a questionnaire and a semi-structured interview session. This study conducted in one of senior high schools in Bandung, 37 students were selected as participants for this study using a purposive sampling technique. They took part in the questionnaire session while, in the interview session, six students participated. Based on the results obtained, the researcher concluded that there are several strategies used to overcome problems in learning English vocabulary such as determination, social, memory, cognitive and metacognitive strategies. Memory strategies got the highest mean score. It is indicated that the students mostly used this strategy to overcome their problems in learning vocabulary which help them memorize information more effectively. Additionally, this study suggests that providing structured guidance on how to maximize the use of these strategies, such as effective dictionary use, collaborative learning, and utilizing multimedia resources, can further enhance students’ vocabulary acquisition and overall language proficiency.

Abstract

This research aims to identify the difficulties students experience in speaking English. A qualitative descriptive method was used to investigate these challenges by distributing questionnaires and conducting interview sessions. The study was conducted at a junior high school in Bandung, with eighth-grade students as the research participants. To gather valuable data, 26 students were selected using purposive sampling. The findings revealed that students face several difficulties in learning to speak English, including challenges with understanding grammar, fluency, pronunciation, limited vocabulary, lack of self-confidence, shyness, anxiety, and lack of motivation. Additionally, it is implied that by addressing the root causes of these difficulties, such as fear and lack of motivation, teachers can help enhance students' ability to communicate effectively in English.

Abstract

Speaking in a foreign language can cause anxiety for many EFL students and it can result a big impact on their performances and overall learning experiences. This study aims to explore the level of Foreign Language Classroom Anxiety (FLCA) and the relationship between FLCA and speaking performance among EFL students. This research employed a mix method research design, it is combination between descriptive qualitative and quantitative to explore the level of Foreign Language Classroom Anxiety (FLCA) and its correlation with students’ speaking performance. This research was conducted in one of universities in Bandung. 24 students who are English students were selected using purposive sampling techniques as participants of this study. Additionally, the findings imply that educators and institutions must prioritize strategies to reduce anxiety in speaking classes and highlight the need for awareness among teachers regarding the impact of anxiety on student performance. It is expected that teacher can create a supportive and non-judgmental environment in the classroom, reduce the pressure on individual students, and allow them to practice speaking in a less intimidating context.

Abstract

This study investigates the strategies used by junior high school students to overcome difficulties in speaking English. Through qualitative interviews with twelve eighth-grade students at a junior high school in Bandung, this research identifies common strategies employed by students to address these challenges. The strategies include preparation before speaking, expanding vocabulary through music, reading English texts, studying grammar, and integrating information and communication technology (ICT) tools like Duolingo. The findings suggest that preparation helps students organize thoughts and reduce anxiety, while vocabulary expansion and grammar study are key for effective communication. ICT, particularly Duolingo, plays a significant role in enhancing speaking skills by providing interactive and engaging platforms for practice. These results inferred that educators can use these insights to adopt more effective teaching methods, while students can apply these strategies to boost their confidence and speaking abilities.

Abstract

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui persepsi siswa tentang penggunaan aplikasi LingoClip untuk menunjang pembelajaran Bahasa Inggris. Penelitian ini menggunakan metode deskriptif kualitatif dengan melakukan wawancara semi terstruktur. Penelitian  ini dilaksanakan di salah satu Sekolah Menengah Pertama Negeri di Sumedang, kelas 10 dipilih sebagai objek penelitian karena aplikasi LingoClip menjadi media pembelajaran utama yang digunakan oleh guru dalam proses pembelajaran. Jumlah siswa di kelas ini adalah 30 orang, pada sesi wawancara diambil sampel sebanyak sembilan siswa yang dibagi menjadi tiga kelompok yaitu siswa yang berprestasi tinggi, sedang, dan rendah Hasil penelitian dan pembahasan menunjukkan bahwa berdasarkan hasil sesi wawancara sebagian besar siswa memiliki persepsi yang bagus, mereka sangat menikmati penggunaan aplikasi LingoClip. Tidak hanya itu, mereka juga menyebutkan bahwa penggunaan aplikasi ini memudahkan mereka dalam belajar bahasa Inggris bahkan motivasi belajar mereka juga meningkat dengan adanya aplikasi ini. Disisi lain, terdapat pula berbagai macam kelemahan yang mereka rasakan ketika menggunakan aplikasi ini, namun yang paling banyak disebutkan oleh siswa adalah aplikasi tersebut kurang efektif digunakan di tempat keramaian jika tidak menggunakan alat seperti earphone atau headset. Meskipun begitu para siswa tersebut menyebutkan bahwa kekurangan yang mereka alami tidak terlalu menjadi masalah karena mereka lebih merasakan kelebihan dari aplikasi tersebut. Oleh karena itu, guru dapat memanfaatkan aplikasi LingoClip sebagai media pembelajaran yang menyenangkan bagi siswa di sekolah dan dapat dikreasikan dengan media lain agar membuat siswa lebih tertarik pada bahasa Inggris
