Abstract

Speaking is an important skill that students must have when learning a language, particularly English. With increasingly advanced or modern developments, some applications can help in learning English, particularly speaking skills, such as the Duolingo application. This research explores students’ perceptions of grade 11 science students at SMAN 1 Rancaekek on the use of Duolingo application in learning speaking, its advantages and disadvantages. To collect the data, a questionnaire adapted from Utami, D. Y, (2020) and Inayah, N., et. al (2020) was given to twenty students and interview was addressed to nine students. The finding reveals that students have a positive perception to the use of the Duolingo application in speaking skills. Moreover, the findings show that there were five advantages, including increasing students’ motivation and encouraging students’ independence in learning speaking skill, assisting students in learning process, adding students’ understanding of English pronunciation, and improving students’ speaking skill. Meanwhile, research identifies three main drawbacks of using Duolingo for speaking skills: it requires an internet connection, includes distracting advertisements, and demands substantial storage space, all of which may hinder its effectiveness in speaking practice. Therefore, it is hoped that this research can provide benefits for students by using the Duolingo application to practice and improve their English learning process and speaking skills.

Abstract

This study explores the classification of English-speaking anxiety levels and identifies the underlying factors contributing to speaking anxiety among EFL undergraduate students. A descriptive qualitative approach was employed, using two main instruments: a questionnaire adapted from Horwitz et al.’s (1986) Foreign Language Classroom Anxiety Scale (FLCAS) and semi-structured interviews that provided deeper insights into students’ perspectives and experiences. The participants were 24 students from an English Education program. The findings revealed that the majority of students (75%) experienced moderate anxiety, while 16.67% showed low anxiety and 8.33% high anxiety. These outcomes reflect a complex interplay of anxiety dimensions: Fear of Negative Evaluation was the most prominent factor (M = 2.47), followed by Communication Apprehension (M = 2.37), and Test Anxiety as the least influential (M = 2.24). The overall results indicate that speaking anxiety was present but not overwhelmingly severe among participants. The study highlights the importance of understanding both the frequency and sources of anxiety, as such insights can inform strategies to foster supportive and non-judgmental classroom environments. Creating these conditions may encourage students to develop greater confidence, enhance oral performance, and reduce their speaking anxiety in EFL contexts.

Abstract

This study aims to discuss derivational affixes in Angelina Jolie’s speech at the UN on women’s equality. This study uses a descriptive qualitative method in analysing the derivation words in Angelina Jolie's speech. The results found 78 derivation words, which consist of 16 prefixes (e.g. -in-, -re-, -epi-) and 62 suffixes (e.g -ity-, -ment-. -tion-). Prefixes are used to create a new meaning of the base word without changing the word class such as the prefix -in- on the word inequal and prefix -un- in the word unwilling the other hand, the addition of suffixes to the base word often changes the word class. A significant change is the change in verbs or adjectives into nouns as much as 73.3% when suffixes are added to verb or adjective base words such as the example of the word govern becomes government. The other change from noun to adjective is 20% as in the word politics becomes political last change of adjective to adverb as much as 6.7% as in the word peaceful becomes peacefully. The findings show a pattern of word formation through the derivational process that emphasizes its role in modifying meaning and grammatical function in the context of formal speech.

Abstract

The development of digital technology presents significant opportunities to enhance students' literacy, particularly in learning English. However, the integration of technology in school environments remains limited, and many students have not yet utilized digital tools as productive learning media. This Community Service Program (PKM) aimed to increase junior high school students’ interest and reading comprehension in English by introducing the Read Along by Google application. The program was conducted at MTs As-Syifa, West Bandung Regency, involving 50 students as participants. The method employed was the Asset-Based Community Development (ABCD) approach through interactive seminars, application simulations, and reflective discussions. The results showed high enthusiasm among students in using the Read Along application, with positive responses toward its interactive features. Besides boosting reading motivation, the activity also encouraged students to integrate technology into their daily learning habits. Therefore, the asset-based and technology-oriented approach proved effective in strengthening digital literacy and supporting English learning at the junior high school level.

Abstract

This research aims to analysis the transitive and intransitive verb from Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secret Novel Chapter 1-5. This research used descriptive qualitative method to gain the data. There are 38 phrasal verbs classified based on those that have direct objects and those that do not have direct objects in their sentences. This study shows that there are 28,95% transitive verbs along with 71,05 phrasal verbs used by the author in the Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets novel page 1-110. This highlights a significant preference for the use of phrasal verbs in emphasizing action or changing the meaning of a word when a particle has been added. Transitive Phrasal Verb such as pick up, put on, and take off are used to indicate actions involving direct object, while Intransitive Phrasal Verb such as got up, went down, and come in describe actions without direct object. This analysis shows that the use of phrasal verb in novel has various idiomatic meanings that cannot always be translated literally, and this not only enriches the language style but also reflects the dynamics of the characters in the narrative situation. This finding is expected to contribute to the understanding of English grammatical structure, especially in the learning and translating literary works.

Abstract

This study aims to investigate English pronunciation among Sundanese students in the English Education Department at Ma'soem University. Specifically, this study aims to analyze difficulties, identify factors, and explore strategies to overcome pronunciation difficulties often experienced by these students. Using a descriptive qualitative approach, this study collected data through classroom observations, questionnaires, and interviews involving 21 Sundanese students majoring English Eduction Department Fourth Semester in Ma’soem University. The results of the study indicate that pronunciation difficulties are generally divided into two levels: segmental and suprasegmental. Segmental issues include incorrect pronunciation of new or unfamiliar words, confusion between words that sound similar, difficulty in pronouncing vowel groups, and errors in diphthong pronunciation. Suprasegmental challenges include difficulty in aligning spelling with pronunciation, incorrect word stress, and inappropriate intonation patterns. Factors influencing these issues include strong interference from the mother language language , limited exposure to authentic English input, student-related variables such as motivation and confidence, and a tendency to pronounce English words based on their written form. To overcome these challenges, students employ several strategies, including phonetic training and increased phonological awareness, active listening and imitation of native speakers, receiving feedback and corrections from classmates or instructors, and utilizing technological tools such as pronunciation apps and online resources. The implications of this research highlight the importance of incorporating systematic pronunciation instruction into English language curricula, particularly for students from local language backgrounds. It also underscores the need for educators to provide more native-like input and corrective feedback to support pronunciation development among Sundanese learners.

Abstract

This study evaluates the implementation of Kurikulum Merdeka in English language teaching at senior high schools in Kabupaten Bandung, using the CIPP (Context, Input, Process, Product) evaluation model. A mixed-methods design was applied, involving 131 participants from four schools, including principals, vice principals, teachers, and students. Data were collected through questionnaires, observations, and interviews, with instruments tested for validity and reliability. Findings show encouraging progress alongside key challenges. In context, schools (93.33%) and teachers (85.83%) affirmed strong alignment with institutional vision and policy, while students (72.93%) found lessons more engaging and relevant. Input results indicated sufficient training and facilities (80–85%), though students rated this lower (73.49%). The process dimension reflected strong implementation by schools (85%) and teachers (88.12%) through differentiation, project-based learning, and feedback, but student engagement was weaker (71.20%). In terms of product, schools (80%) and teachers (80.83%) observed improved performance, yet only 58.79% of students felt personal progress. Overall, the curriculum shows contextual relevance, resource readiness, and positive outcomes, but student experiences vary. Challenges include inconsistent transfer of teacher training to practice, supervision that often feels administrative, and student concerns over workload and confidence. Strengthening teacher capacity, fostering meaningful supervision, and building learner confidence are crucial to ensuring that Kurikulum Merdeka not only aligns with policy but also delivers deeper benefits to students.
