Abstract

This research was conducted on 27 April-30 May 2019 at Tiram Beach, Karambia Ampek Beach and Gosong Beach, Padang Pariaman Regency, West Sumatra Province. This study aims to determine the relationship between sediment grain size and the number of turtle eggs. The method used in this research is purposive sampling. The sampling location is divided into 3 stations, each station is divided into 5 sampling points in order to obtain 15 sampling points, of which the fifteen sampling points are the usual nesting sites for turtles. Sediment samples were taken approximately 500 grams, put in a plastic bag, then labeled and then the sample was taken to the laboratory for analysis. The procedure for analyzing the sediment grains for sand and gravel fractions used the wet sieving method, for the sludge fraction was analyzed using the pipette method. The results from the wet sieving method and the pipette method were combined and the mean size (Mz) was obtained. Measurement data were analyzed using linear regression analysis, then correlation and regression analysis to determine the form of the relationship and the strength of the relationship between two or more variables. Sea turtles will lay eggs, namely the mean size ranges from 1.13-1.8 Ø. The coefficient of determination (R2) = 0.53 and the correlation coefficient r = 0.73. This means that the coefficient of determination shows the average diameter (mean size) affects 53% of the number of turtle eggs, while the other 47% is influenced by other factors, for example vegetation around the coast..

Abstract

ABSTRAKThe research was conducted in May 2014, in the western part of the Rupat Strait. The aim of study was to determine the sediment material horizontally. This samples were taken using Eckman Grab from 9 sampling points. The analysis of the organic content in the sediment was also done. The results showed that the composition of the sediment in the western part of the Strait Rupat composed of lithogenous (rocks, mica, quartz ) and biogenous ( litter and Foraminifera). Lithogenous composition of rocks dominate waters and existede evenly at each sampling point. The highest percentage found in a location close to the mainland, this was suggested that the materials carried by the tide of Malacca and ebb currents of the Sungai Masjid River piled around this sampling point. In addition, the type of rock could have also come from erosion and anthropogenic activities in water around the edge. The organic matter content of sediment was highest at the sampling point close to the mangrove area. This was due to getting the supplay of organic material from the mangrove areas. Keywords: Composition, Tidal Currents, Sediment, Rupat Strait, Mangrove

Abstract

ABSTRACT The aim of this research is to know the condition of coral reefs including the live coral cover of the waters of Cempedak Island Bintan. This research had been conducted in the waters around Cempedak Island Bintan in May 2018.The research station is divided into 3 stations based on environmental characteristics with a depth of 5 meters.Research stations include Eagle Rock, near Jetty and Deadmans Beach. The data of coral reefs were collected by using Underwater Photograph Transect (UPT) method. Data were analyzed using Coral Point Count with Excel extension (CPCe) application. The results showed that coral cover on the study sites ranged around 23.87% to 47.87% which can be classified as poor  to moderate category sequentialy. At each station can be seen a high percentage is in station III with value 47.87%, whereas at station II coral percentage is low or bad with value 23.87%.The low coral cover is caused by the strong ocean currents causing sediment staggeration so that the sediment covers the coral surface and because of the current, the number of races and dead corals found with algae to cause the coral is damaged as in station II. The quality of water such as temperature, salinity, pH and visibility of the research location was good for coral reefs recovery and growth. Keyword: Coral reef, Cempedak Island, Underwater photograph Transect (UPT),  Current Speed
