Abstract

The purpose of this research is to analyze the polysemic meanings of the Japanese verb miru. This study examines the lexical and grammatical variations of miru, focusing on its meanings as described in the Daijirin dictionary and contextualized through examples in the Japanese novel Totto-chan, which has been translated directly into Indonesian. Using a qualitative approach, this research applies descriptive and interpretative analysis to explore how miru operates across different contexts and nuances within the novel. The findings reveal that miru encompasses a wide range of meanings, from visual perception to deeper conceptual and introspective senses, which are sometimes untranslatable without losing meaning in the source language. This research highlights the complexities of Japanese polysemy and contributes to a deeper understanding of linguistic nuances in Japanese, emphasizing the importance of context in translation and interpretation.

Abstract

This study investigates global trends and impacts of gamification in language learning, focusing on how research in this area has evolved over the past two decades (2000–2024). A bibliometric approach was adopted, utilizing data from the Scopus database and applying the PRISMA framework to systematically identify and include 358 relevant articles. The study employed bibliometric tools, VOSviewer and Bibliometrix, to analyze collaboration networks, keyword associations, and publication trends. The findings reveal significant global growth in gamification research, with a sharp increase in publications between 2015 and 2020, driven by advancements in digital learning technologies. Countries such as the United States, Spain, Indonesia, and Malaysia emerged as key contributors. Gamification was shown to enhance motivation, engagement, and learning outcomes, particularly in vocabulary and grammar instruction, while its impact on speaking skills remains underexplored. Cultural, technological, and policy factors were found to influence the adoption of gamification, suggesting that localized strategies are essential for effective implementation. This study offers original insights into the global development and application of gamification in language learning and highlights gaps that require further exploration, such as its use in advanced language skills and technology-limited settings. The findings provide practical implications for educators, curriculum developers, and policymakers to design inclusive and adaptive gamification strategies that address diverse educational contexts.

Abstract

This study explores the semantic distinctions of three Japanese fukugodōshi verbs: ~owaru, ~ageru, and ~kiru, which indicate varying degrees of action completion. ~Owaru signifies the general completion of an action without focusing on the result or perfection, while ~ageru emphasizes not only the completion but also the production of something valuable. ~Kiru, on the other hand, highlights the complete and thorough execution of an action without any remainder. This research aims to analyze how these verbs are used in formal contexts, specifically in Japanese media such as newspapers. Using a descriptive qualitative approach, articles from Asahi Shimbun and Mainichi Shimbun were selected to observe the use of these fukugodōshi verbs. Semantic analysis was conducted to explore the nuances conveyed by each verb in various contexts, providing deeper insights into how they reflect different levels of action completion. The findings of this study offer a clearer understanding of fukugodōshi usage in formal communication and contribute to Japanese language pedagogy, especially for learners to differentiate the appropriate usage of these verbs in specific contexts.

Abstract

This study examines the representation of Toyotomi Hideyoshi, initially known as Tokichiro, in the historical drama Taikouki (1987) directed by Kihachi Okamoto, using Roland Barthes' semiotic analysis. By analysing both denotative (literal) and connotative (deeper cultural and social) meanings, the research highlights Hideyoshi's multifaceted characterization as weak but determined, loyal, intelligent in strategy, charmingly flirtatious, humorous, and skilled in negotiation. These traits not only reflect his human side but also mirror key Japanese cultural values such as ganbaru (perseverance), wa (harmony), and leadership rooted in communication and diplomacy. The drama, produced during Japan's economic miracle in the 1980s, aligns Hideyoshi’s resilience and adaptability with societal ideals of the time, emphasizing the importance of collaboration and strategic thinking in overcoming challenges. Through Barthes’ semiotic approach, this study demonstrates how Taikouki functions as both a reconstruction of historical narratives and a reflection of contemporary cultural values. Ultimately, the drama reinforces Hideyoshi’s image as a visionary leader who achieved success through emotional intelligence, humor, and diplomacy, offering a nuanced portrayal that resonates with modern viewers while preserving his historical significance.
