Abstract

Song lyric translation is a complex process that involves not only linguistic aspects but also musicality and cultural acceptability in the target language. This study aims to analyze the translation techniques used in the Japanese versions of the songs Arjuna and Bento, based on Molina and Albir’s (2004) translation techniques. A qualitative descriptive method was employed, with textual analysis conducted on the original Indonesian lyrics and their Japanese translations. The findings reveal that 13 translation techniques were utilized in both songs, with different dominant techniques corresponding to the characteristics of each song. Arjuna, which has a romantic and poetic theme, predominantly employs established equivalence, amplification, and transposition to preserve the song’s aesthetics and emotional meaning. In contrast, Bento, which carries a strong social critique, primarily employs modulation, adaptation, reduction, and linguistic compression to align its meaning with Japanese expressive norms. These findings suggest that in song lyric translation, the choice of translation techniques is significantly influenced by the song’s theme, syntactic structure, rhythm, and cultural acceptability in the target language. This study is expected to contribute to research on song lyric translation and provide insight for translators in adapting songs across languages while maintaining their meaning, aesthetics, and musicality.

Abstract

This article examines how Gudang Garam Filter International advertisements construct myths of masculinity, power, and success using visual and narrative elements. Using Roland Barthes’s semiotic approach, which conceptualizes myth not as falsehood but as a culturally constructed narrative that gives ideological meaning to signs, this study analyzes symbols such as dark colors, luxury cars, formal clothing, and dominant activities that create the image of a strong and sophisticated man. The analysis shows that these elements build a narrative of a successful man who dominates his social environment despite contradicting government health warnings. Ethical implications are also discussed considering how such advertisements may create cognitive dissonance among consumers. Furthermore, although consumers are generally aware of the dangers of smoking, factors such as addiction, identity seeking among teenagers, and the tobacco industry's contribution to the national economy highlight the complexity of the issue. This study emphasizes the need for critical awareness in interpreting advertising narratives in broader social and public health realities.

Abstract

This study explores the semiotic representation of leadership embodied by the main character in the first season of the anime “Dr. Stone” directed by Shinya Iino. Utilizing Peirce’s semiotic theory, the research analyzes key scenes to uncover how visual and verbal signs construct the image of leadership within the context of Japanese popular culture. Data were collected through purposive sampling of selected episodes, focusing on narrative and character interactions that depict leadership values. The findings reveal that Senku Ishigami’s leadership is represented through specific icons, indexes, and symbols—such as scientific tools, gestures, and verbal affirmations—which collectively construct a unique leadership model that blends rationality, collectivism, and resilience. The study highlights how anime functions not only as entertainment but also as a medium for transmitting contemporary leadership values. The implications of this research suggest a need for broader cultural studies on leadership narratives in Japanese media, providing new insights for educators and scholars in language and cultural studies.

Abstract

This study explores the influence of Japanese language proficiency and internship experience on students’ readiness for professional engagement within Japanese-speaking tourism service environments. Focusing on students from the Diploma 4 Tourism Business Program and the Diploma 3 Travel Program at Makassar Tourism Polytechnic, the research addresses the persistent gap between academic language instruction and real-world communicative competence in Japanese Language Skills contexts. A quantitative method was employed, involving 124 students who had completed internships and enrolled in elective Japanese language courses. Data were analyzed using SmartPLS version 4.1.1.4, incorporating outer and inner model assessments such as convergent validity, discriminant validity, composite reliability, R², f², and hypothesis testing for both direct and indirect effects. The findings indicate that internship experience has a significantly strong influence on students’ readiness to interact with Japanese partners (f² = 0.8398; p < 0.001), while general Japanese language proficiency exerts a moderate yet meaningful impact. Conversely, basic text mastery and formal Japanese communication skills show weak and statistically insignificant effects. These results underscore the vital role of experiential learning in enhancing functional language application in professional settings. The study recommends integrating practical language activities into internships and strengthening collaboration between academic programs and industry. Future research should examine the quality of internship placements and evaluate ESP outcomes across different hospitality and tourism programs

Abstract

This study analyses the use of figurative language in The Book 1 album lyrics by YOASOBI through a semantic approach. Figurative language, including metaphor, personification, simile, and hyperbole, is crucial in enhancing song lyrics' emotional depth and artistic expression. This research explores how these figurative elements contribute to meaning-making and emotional engagement in the songs. A qualitative descriptive-analytical method focused on semantic analysis of selected lyrics. The data consist of seven songs from the album The Book 1, which were analysed through document analysis to identify patterns of figurative language. Each instance of metaphor, personification, simile, and hyperbole was categorized based on its linguistic structure and contextual function within the lyrics. The findings reveal that metaphors in YOASOBI’s lyrics establish strong symbolic imagery by connecting abstract concepts with concrete objects. Personification is used to attribute human qualities to non-human entities, intensifying emotional resonance. Simile explicitly compares two distinct elements to clarify feelings, while hyperbole amplifies emotions to create dramatic effects. These devices collectively enrich the meaning of the lyrics, allowing listeners to experience a deeper emotional connection to the songs. The study concludes that YOASOBI’s use of figurative language enhances their music's aesthetic and emotive aspects, making their lyrics more impactful and immersive.

Abstract

This research is conducted to find out the similarities and differences of the three verbs. This research discusses the semantic relationship between the verbs tsukau, riyousuru, shiyousuru in Japanese news media where the three verbs have similar meanings or the same meaning which is "using" when translated into Indonesian. In addition, the method of substitution in the sentence is used to find out the relationship of the three verbs. The data used in this research is obtained from Japanese news media that are always up to date, namely NHK Japan, Yomiuri Shinbun, and Asahi Shinbun, which always present Japanese news to international media. The method of data collection, data analysis, and descriptive analysis. For further analysis, a descriptive qualitative method was used. The three verbs have the same meaning, which is to use or utilize objects or goods for a particular purpose. The similarity of meaning can substitute each other in sentences and can be classified into synonymous meaning relations. However, the difference in meaning between tsukau, riyousuru, and shiyousuru makes the three verbs unable to substitute each other in sentences.

Abstract

This study analyzes the application of the classical detective formula in Keigo Higashino’s novel Yogisha X no Kenshin using John George Cawelti’s theory of the classical detective formula. The purpose of this research is to identify the narrative patterns and their modifications that distinguish the novel from conventional detective formulas. The study employs a descriptive qualitative method with a close-reading technique. The data were obtained from the Japanese version of the novel and its Indonesian translation, then classified according to the five aspects of the classical detective formula: introduction of the detective, crime and clues, investigation, announcement of the solution, explanation of the solution, and the ending. The findings show that although the classical detective formula is applied consistently, it is accompanied by structural innovations. The story does not begin with the introduction of the detective, but instead opens with the depiction of a crime supported by false clues functioning as diversions. The character Yukawa Manabu is portrayed as a physics professor who solves the case through a scientific approach. The investigation process highlights not only the criminal aspects but also the moral conflicts accompanying the perpetrator’s actions. The stages of announcing and explaining the solution, together with the ending, are presented sequentially and form a confrontational structure in revealing the true perpetrator. Yogisha X no Kenshin enriches the detective genre by modifying the classical formula through scientific reasoning, clue manipulation, and nuanced characterization of the perpetrator. Such innovations represent an important contribution to the development of modern detective formulas in Japan.
