Abstract

Vertisols are soils that expand when wet but shrivel and harden when dry. Their high clay content can affect soil aeration so that it can interfere with nutrient absorption. Biochar is a soil enhancer that has a longer impact on the sustainability of soil fertility. The aim of this study was to evaluate the residual dose of biochar that had been applied five years previously and NPK fertilizer on the growth and yield of shallots on Vertisol as soil medium. This study was conducted in Tunggulwulung Village, Lowokwaru District, Malang City. The method used a two-factor Randomized Block Design, consisting of biochar residue with 3 doses (0; 250; 500 g per polybag) and NPK fertilization (with and without fertilization). There was a positive impact from the residue of the previous five-year application of biochar on increasing the number of shallot leaves and bulbs on Vertisol.

Abstract

The increase in black soybean production is constrained by the decreasing productive land area due to increasing population pressure. Dryland is an alternative that can be developed because of its availability. This study aimed to determine the best dosage of biochar and NPK for black soybean plants in dryland. The treatments were arranged in a randomized block design with two factors that were repeated three times. The first factor was the dose of tobacco Jengkok biochar (0, 10, 15, and 20 t ha-1) and the second factor was the dose of NPK Phonska fertilizer (0, 25, 50, and 100 kg ha-1). Soil used for this study was collected from dry land in Gading Kulon Village, Dau District, Malang Regency. Ten kilograms of the collected soil was placed in a polybag and mixed with biochar according to the treatment dose. After 7 days of biochar application, soybean seeds of Detam 1 variety were planted, and soil samples were taken to observe soil organic C, N, P, and K contents. NPK fertilizer was applied according to the treatment dose at 10 days after planting, Plant height and number of leaves were observed at 2, 4, and 6 weeks after planting. Biomass and crop yields were observed at physiological maturity at 85 days after planting. The results showed that the highest levels of organic C, total N, and K were at a dose of 20 t biochar ha-1, but the use of 15 t biochar ha-1 was the optimum dose for biomass and yield of black soybeans. The highest seed weight was obtained from 100 kg NPK ha-1.

Abstract

The residual effects of biochar doses on Entisols after five years of application have not received attention. However, there is an assumption that the positive effects of biochar can last longer in the soil. Therefore, field experiments were carried out in polybags to assess the residual impact of applying biochar doses in the fifth year and the addition of urea fertilizer on the growth of red spinach (Amaranthus tricolor) in Entisol. The growing media used in this study was a medium previously used for five years containing biochar in Entisols. This study used a 2-factor randomized block design consisting of residual doses of biochar (3 levels) and the addition of urea fertilizer (2 levels). There was no interaction between biochar and N fertilizer. Application of biochar at a dose of 500 g/polybag gave a better follow-up effect than 250 g/polybag on the growth of red spinach in the fifth year. Chlorophyll content increased with N fertilization. Applying biochar in the fifth year and N fertilization positively impacted the growth of red spinach in Entisol. Spinach yield increased 30% at the remaining dose of biochar 500 g/polybag and 52% with N fertilization. Within five years, using higher doses of biochar and adding urea will result in better growth of red spinach in Entisol.

Abstract

The study, which aimed to analyze the use of chemical fertilizers and pesticides using the Cobb-Douglas production function approach and their reallocation to increase the income of vegetable farmers and prevent land degradation, was conducted in Sumberejo Village, Batu City, Indonesia. Data were collected from 138 pakcoy (Brassica rapa), celery (Apium graveolens), and red chili (Capsicum annuum) farmers through interviews using a questionnaire. The relationship between input and output was analyzed by regression with the Cobb-Douglas production function. Data validity, reliability, and classical assumption tests were performed to ensure the goodness of fit regression model. Furthermore, the F test and t-test were applied to analyze production response to chemical fertilizers and pesticides. This study revealed that the modeled regression equation is appropriate, where R2 = 0.827-0.933. Vegetable production gives a different response to the use of chemical fertilizers (TSP, Urea, and NPK) and pesticides. Increasing this chemical in pakcoy and celery farming is possible, but it needs to be considered because it has no significant effect on increasing production. The productivity of these two types of plants is relatively high. Farmers need to compare the costs of adding these inputs to additional income and the possibility of land degradation. Chemical fertilizers and pesticides have been excessive in red chili farming, so productivity is very low. There are indications that the land has been degraded, but to be sure, a study is needed on the chemical content of the vegetable fields in Sumberejo Village and the optimal use of chemical fertilizers and pesticides.
