Abstract

The aim of this essay is to provide a comprehensive analysis of Mohammed Arkoun's rationalist evaluation of the intellectual culture within the Arab-Islamic context. This study employs a functional approach that aims to reinterpret religious concepts within the context of culture and the daily interactions of individuals in society. The study's findings indicate that Arkoun's critique of Islamic rationalism, as approached through the lens of historicism, exhibits a significant impact from current Western philosophers. Arkoun incorporates various Western philosophies and notions in his analysis of the passages of the Koran. In his exploration of Islamic beliefs, Arkoun draws upon several theoretical frameworks like poststructuralism, corpus, episteme, discourse, deconstruction, myth, and logocentrism. Arkoun employs semiotic theory and extends its application to the interpretation of Quranic passages, surpassing the boundaries of semiotics as a discipline. Furthermore, Arkoun undertook a comprehensive examination of the interpretations of the Al-Quran's verses, aiming to prevent any potential confusion, rectify interpretive inaccuracies, and safeguard the Muslim community from divergent understandings. (iii) Arkoun thinks that the symbolic construction of the Koran has exerted a profound influence on the collective consciousness and cognitive processes of humanity, hence serving as a source of inspiration to rectify one's thinking and direct individuals towards morally upright deeds.

Abstract

In classical Islamic thought, ‘divine predestination’ (qada’ wa’l-qadar) versus ‘human free will’ (ikhtiyar) is one of the most hotly contested topics. This article critically analyses the contribution made to this discourse by the two prominent schools of Islamic theology, the Asharites and the Mu’tazilites, by focusing on a topic that is crucial to the philosophy and theology of theology. This article seeks to properly understand Islamic intellectual history and culture by arguing that the treatment of the two schools of Islamic theology on the issue of qada’ wa’l-qadar and ikhtiyar is innovative, influential, and fundamentally more complex than previously acknowledged. On the subject of free will versus fate, the study’s findings indicate that the Mu’tazilah and Ash’ariyah have made compromises between philosophical, theological (kalam), and esoteric (sûfi) perspectives. Given that the subject matter and methodology of kalam, falsafah, and tasawwûf are frequently considered to be very different or even contradictory, this attitude of accommodation is plainly exceptional.

Abstract

This study discusses Sarah R. Bin Tyeer’s views concerning Al-Qur’an aesthetics. This article emphasizes that people who read pre-modern Arabic-Islamic literature often encounter themes of binary opposition within them, for example, the conflict between the sacred and the profane, the pious and the godless. In the Arab-Islamic tradition, literary and aesthetic elements are pre-modern, modern, and contemporary literary expressions that show the continuity of the influence of Al-Qur’an as a sacred entity. Tyeer thinks that there have been many scientific studies placing Al-Qur’an in the history of literature and investigating its influence on Arabic literature. Through critical discourse analysis method, this study has tried to describe, interpret, and critically explain Al-Qur’an esthetics discourse. This method has proven that Tyeer’s ideas concerning Al-Qur’an aesthetics are considered appropriate in elaborating and exploring the relationship between Tyeer’s thoughts on Al-Qur’an aesthetics with the cultural and social contexts that surround it. Tyeer also succeeded in explaining the relationship between the use of the beauty of Al-Qur’an language and Arab social and cultural practices. In this case, Tyeer’s view is focused on the text and context, not on the scientific paradigm.
