Abstract

Fida’an is an activity carried out by Javanese Muslims after the death of one of their community member. The activity consists of reciting the Quranic verses of al-Ikhlas a thousand times or the tahlil up to 71.000 times which is addressed to the deceased to avoid the torment of the fires of hell and get holy rewards. This study seeks to find out the views of the people of Plosojenar Village, Kauman District, Ponorogo Regency regarding fida’an by inquiring (1) What and how is the practice of fida’an among people of Plosojenar? and (2) How do the people of Plosojenar associate fida’an practices with hadith texts? In this study, the authors used the method of observation, interviews, and documentation to obtain supporting data. The data analysis used was descriptive qualitative with a phenomenological approach to religion and anthropology of religious symbols by examining the concept of diversity in the symbols present in the ritual. The results of the study concluded that (1) the meaning of fida’an for the Plosojenar people is divided into two parts, namely burdening good deeds and freeing from the torment of hellfire; and (2) the community's view of fida’an is diverse such as getting rewards and guaranteed by Allah Swt to avoid hell, as well as the growth of togetherness, help, friendship and charity within the community.

Abstract

Recent Qur’ānic scholarship has increasingly revisited the relationship between the oral and written dimensions of revelation. This article examines these dimensions through Angelika Neuwirth’s concept of pre-canonical reading, focusing on Sūrah Al-Ikhlāṣ. Neuwirth approaches the Qur’ān from literary, historical, and comparative perspectives, emphasizing that its oral features—such as rhythm, recitation, and audience interaction—are vital for understanding how the Qur’ān initially communicated its message. She argues that the process of codification transformed these living oral expressions into a fixed text, often separating the Qur’ān from its dynamic historical setting. By re-examining Sūrah Al-Ikhlāṣ within its early socio-historical context, this study shows that its concise monotheistic message still carries traces of orality through its sound patterns, rhetorical balance, and dialogical tone. The analysis highlights Neuwirth’s contribution to Qur’ānic studies by bridging orality and textuality, showing the Qur’ān as both a spoken revelation and a historical document shaped through stages of transmission and canonization.

Abstract

The escalating global ecological crisis necessitates a new approach for a new approach to reconstruct the relationship between humans and nature. One relevant philosophical perspective is deep ecology, which emphasizes the intrinsic equality of all ecological entities and advocates for a radical transformation of the dominant anthropocentric paradigm. Although often associated with Western thought, this concept finds resonance in the discourse of Islamic ecotheology. This research aims to examine the ecological principles in the exegesis of the Qur'an through a comparative analysis of the thoughts of two prominent figures in contemporary Islamic eco-philosophy: Mutawalli al-Sya'rawi and Fazlun Khalid. This study employs a qualitative comparative analysis of the exegetical works of al-Sya'rawi and Fazlun Khalid, focusing on their interpretations of key Qur'anic verses central to ecological ethics, such as the concepts of the Trust (QS Al-Aḥzāb: 72), Balance (QS Al-Raḥmān: 7-9), and the inherent value of creation (QS Al-Anʿām: 38).The findings reveal that al-Sya'rawi developed a metaphysical and spiritual framework. Viewing nature as a divine hierophany (tajalli), while Khalid offers a pragmatic-participatory ecological ethics grounded in maqāṣid syarī'ah and the prophetic sunnah. This research contributes to the enrichment of Islamic ecological epistemology through the complementary synthesis of these two approaches and provides an integrative perspective on the role of Islam as a transformative solution to the global environmental crisis.

Abstract

Al-munasabah is a science which has an important role within al-Qur'an tafseer studies, because this study examines the contents of al-Qur'an by finding the correlation of it’s verses. On the other hand some orientalist spread the stigma to against al-Qur'an in over time by dedicating that al-Qur'an and it’s verses are not systematic. Based on this statement, writer choose Ibnu Asyur because he is the only one who applied exegetes science of al-munasabah in al-Qur'an. He also proved that unsystematic of al-Qur'an is being one of I'jaz al-Qur'an. Then, this is a main reason to deny orientalist minded. It have a correlation and compliance between verses with another’s, from the first verse discussed the earthly desires, correlated with the later paragraph that have a desire of hereafter. Both of verses are inter-related to bring up the secrets of the two differenc of verbs within it. The next verse investigates about the glory of Allah that spread along his creature without any differentiation. Allah SWT gives a description about Prophet Muhammad SAW as a purely human who get his mercy as a role model of good character for human being to carry out a favor and leave the vise versa to get his glory in the afterlife, it was because that Allah warned his creature to renounce the Act of shirk, because this act that caused the absence of God in afterlif.
