Abstract

This study sought to examine any form of criticism and resistance against the growing religious intolerance in Indonesian contemporary indie songs. The study of indie music is often marginalised in media and communication studies, even though the music itself is an effective form of media to convey socio-political messages. Indie music shows an increasingly crucial role within the map of cultural products in Indonesia mainly because it is considered an important means of conveying messages and alternative media for new Indonesian youth. Indie musicians cover sensitive issues within their lyric, including religious intolerance perpetrated by conservative Muslim groups in Indonesia. Through the discourse analysis method by Teun Van Dijk, this study found three forms of resistance discourse found in Indonesian indie music: a critique towards middle-class Muslims hypocrisy, rejection against the imposition of the sharia law, and the lament over the loss of humanity in religious practice. The research findings show that indie songs serve as a medium of resistance to a more secular, youthful audience against many issues seldom covered in mainstream media.

Abstract

This study aimed to discuss the role of the Premature Indonesia support group in health communication as an effort to prevent retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) in Indonesia. ROP is an eye developmental disorder due to premature birth, which results in a child’s permanent blindness. The awareness about the risk of ROP is still very low so health communication efforts are currently necessary. This study was conducted using a qualitative research approach with in-depth interviews as the primary data. The secondary data were collected through literature study, observation, and researcher’s experience. The results showed that Premature Indonesia’s health communication efforts were carried out through several stages namely analyzing main problems, selecting credible and experienced educators, using social media as the main communication medium, and formulating and delivering explicit health information messages. Through these health communication efforts, the Premature Indonesia support group could increase health awareness and the risk of ROP in premature babies along with its prevention efforts. Keywords: health communication, public health, retinopathy of prematurity, prematurity, child blindness, social support.

Abstract

Background: The presence of the Internet has introduced a more complex way within the process of disseminating various images and information about celebrities, including private celebrity information such as scandals, conflicts, and various aspects of personal life that previously could only be enjoyed in classic infotainment formats in the mass media. Purpose: This study analyzes the motives of the audience’s consumption process for the content produced by various celebrity gossip accounts in Indonesian cyberspace. This research aims to dig deeper into the audience’s motives when consuming this particular information about celebrities. Methods: This research was conducted using in-depth interviews with ten sources who regularly consume the content of online celebrity gossip accounts on social media. Results: The results show that three motives encourage audiences to consume celebrity gossip online: informational motives, entertainment motives, and social motives. The information motive refers to the interviewee’s perception that online celebrity gossip accounts provide a more detailed and exclusive source of information. The entertainment motive refers to the enjoyment of the audience when they are involved in ‘imaginary drama’ and heated debate between audiences in the comment section. Social motive refers to the value of celebrity gossip as a valuable resource to start conversations and maintain group cohesion among close friends. Conclusions: The public’s interest in consuming celebrity information, whether for informational, entertainment, or social reasons, indicates an unrelenting demand for information about celebrities which in turn encourages the proliferation of gossip-providing accounts on social media. Implications: This study itself serves as an initial stepping stone to open a more serious study on celebrity culture in Indonesia.

Abstract

This paper is written based on a qualitative approach, to explore the ability to use communication technology by micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMES) within the culinary field to support their ability to innovate in developing countries such as Indonesia. A total of 30 small and micro enterprises from the two biggest cities in East Java province participated in this empirical study. The data collection system is carried out using a semistructured interview that looks at the ability of business users to understand the internet as a media through four digital literacy elements, namely the ability to access, analyze, evaluate, and create messages. Based on the results of comparative analysis, it was found that the majority of MSMES owners have just reached the access phase, which is the initial phase where users are connected to the internet and utilize the most basic features of application services. MSMES owners only use internet technology for informal communication purposes and access to entertainment. One of the most important points from the results of the interview is the existence of religious issues which hamper the willingness of some MSMES owners to embrace the internet by creating reluctance and suspicion against the internet. One of them is the usury discourse that appears on non-cash payment technology and food purchasing services by online transportation.

Abstract

The effective communication is crucial for providing good service at the Community Health Center (Puskesmas). One major issue that can lead to patient dissatisfaction is the communication skills of health workers. When these workers struggle to communicate well, patients may feel poorly served and find it hard to understand their health conditions and care instructions. To address this problem, the Communication Department of FISIP UNAIR organized a training called "Communication Skills Training for Health Workers to Improve Puskesmas Services at the Sidoarjo Regency." The aim of the training was to minimize communication errors between doctors and patients and enhance the community’s view of services at the Puskesmas. The training included various sessions for health workers. They had the chance to share their thoughts, understand patient backgrounds, and practice listening skills. They also learned how to use facial expressions, gestures, and polite language when communicating with patients through role-play exercises. The results of the training were positive. Participants could explain the material through role-play and improved their active listening skills. They managed their facial expressions, gestures, and voice tone better, and applied polite communication with patients from different backgrounds. A final survey showed a 25% increase in communication skills, improving from 55% to 80%. In summary, the community service team concluded that the training was well received and effectively implemented by participants at their health centers.
