Abstract

Appropriate mathematics learning media is one factor determining the success of learning mathematics. Teachers can use various types of media to help students learn mathematics. However, teachers must consider the learning media's suitability with students' characteristics. This study aims to 1) reveal the most effective learning media for visual, auditory, and kinesthetic learning styles; 2) determine the interaction between learning media and learning styles on students' mathematics achievement. Therefore, this study used a 3 × 3 factorial design. The sample in this study was 29 eighth-grade students in junior high school. Researchers used questionnaires and mathematics achievement tests to collect research data to be analyzed quantitatively. The results show that interactive applications are the most effective learning media for students with different learning styles. Besides, there is a significant interaction effect between learning media and learning styles on students' mathematics achievement.

Abstract

This workshop aims to equip prospective mathematics teachers with the skills to explore numeracy problems in tourism contexts. The workshop is designed using a service learning approach and involves students from various universities across the Sumatra region. The core activities include identifying sequences of tourism activities, exploring numeracy problems embedded in each activity, and formulating context-based problems. The main output is a mini-project in the form of contextual open-ended math problems. The success of the workshop is measured through pretest and posttest comparisons, participant satisfaction surveys, and levels of active engagement. The results show that this approach effectively enhances students’ competence in designing mathematics instrumen based on local contexts.

Abstract

Although enumeration problems are fundamental in combinatorics, little is known about how students intuitively approach such enumeration problems before receiving formal instruction. This exploratory qualitative study investigated the initial strategies employed by twelve-grade students in solving enumeration problems prior to formal instruction on enumeration rules. Fifteen students from a public senior high school in Kerinci, Indonesia, who had not yet learned combinatorics in the curriculum, participated in this study. Data were collected through students’ written responses to three combinatorial problems presented in different real-life contexts and further explored through semi-structured interviews. Only responses demonstrating coherent and interpretable strategy were analyzed. The findings reveal three dominant strategies: listing all possible arrangements, generalizing patterns, and applying the multiplication principle. These findings indicate that students possess intuitive approaches that can serve as a foundation for formal combinatorial reasoning. The study aligns with the Realistic Mathematics Education (RME) perspective, emphasizing the importance of guided reinvention and contextual mathematization, and proposes implications for designing learning trajectories that build on students’ informal reasoning in secondary mathematics education.

Abstract

Abstract

A tourism route is a sequence of tourist attractions visited. Students are familiar with tour activities and often plan tourism routes to visit several tourist attractions. Students' experience and knowledge about tourism routes can be used as a context for teaching the rule of product. Therefore, this research aims to design a learning trajectory for the rule of product using the Indonesian Realistic Mathematics Education (PMRI) approach in the Kerinci nature tourism route context. The research method used is design research with a validation study type, which consists of three stages: preparation and design, teaching experiment, and retrospective analysis. The subjects involved in this research were 11 third-semester mathematics education students at a university in Jambi, Indonesia. The instruments include learning video recordings, student work results, field notes, and test sheets. The research results show that learning trajectories designed in the context of tourism routes can help students discover, understand, and use the rule of product in solving relevant mathematical problems. The learning tracjectory consists of four activities: making a list of Kerinci tourist attractions, determining the location of several tourist attractions on a sketch map, arranging tourist attractions in tourism routes, and solving problems regarding possible tourism routes. This research shows that the designed learning trajectory is vital in helping students discover and understand the rule of product and apply them to solving relevant problems.

Abstract

The rapid development of technology in various fields requires us to adapt and incorporate it into our daily lives and the world of education. However, it is necessary to conduct research and identify appropriate applications to ensure technology is used effectively in learning. This study aims to uncover junior high school students' experiences using an Android-based application, namely Algebra Tiles, and determine the impact of using such applications on the students’ learning outcomes in mathematics. The students reflected on their experiences while participating in mathematics classes in eleventh-grade at one of the junior high schools in Kerinci, Jambi, Indonesia. An embedded design of a mixed methods approach, combining qualitative and quantitative methods, was employed to understand students' experiences and learning effectiveness. Interviews and observations were conducted to reveal how the students interacted with the application during the learning process. In addition, a concept comprehension test was administered to students who learned with the assistance of the Android application and to a comparison group who learned without it. The data obtained through observations and interviews were subjected to thematic analysis. On the other hand, the data from the student's comprehension test results were analyzed using statistical methods. The research findings indicate that students who learned with the assistance of the Android application achieved higher concept comprehension scores than those who learned without it. Multi-directional communication between students and teachers, as well as between students themselves, was observed to be very active. There was a transition in the focus of discussions from technical issues with the application during the initial meetings to issues related to learning materials in subsequent meetings. However, signs of boredom were observed in the final two meetings. Overall, the students expressed enthusiasm and felt challenged to explore what could be learned using the Android-based application. The active interactions among students through verbal communication during the learning process indicate that the application can potentially enhance students' engagement in mathematics learning.

Abstract

Mathematical knowledge will be meaningful for students if it is discovered through mathematical rediscovery activities. This research aims to provide an overview of the activities carried out by researchers in teaching material on multiplication rule and permutation as an insight for other researchers to try various activities that are relevant for teaching combinatorics material in general. This research is a scoping literature review using the 8-stage framework of Xiao & Watson. The review was carried out on 6 relevant articles published in various reputable international journals without a specific time limit. Based on the results of the review, it was found that learning permutations using activities included using the context of towers, beaded bracelets, presentation sequences, teddy bears, and photography. The activities used generally consist of arranging physical objects. The author suggests using reorderable objects to teach permutations. The context used must be adapted to the knowledge and experience of the students.
