Abstract

Dental resin composites have become the first choice among the filling materials due to their aestheticpotential to suit a variety of therapeutic indications and can conserve the tooth structure. However, there areconcerns that this material may be toxic because of the possibility of releasing components after restoration.Bisphenol-A (BPA) is a primary material for dental resins that is a precursor for BisGMA as a natural resin, anddegradation of dental resins can leach BPA to the oral cavity. Despite the possibility of a leachable substance, manystudies concluded that the release of BPA from dental resin composites might not be absorbed systemically. Theyleached less than the toxic level that may cause adverse effects.KEYWORDS: BisGMA, BPA, resin composites,

Abstract

A. actinomycetemcomitans bacteria is the main pathogenic microorganism identified as the cause of aggressive periodontitis, with a prevalence of 90%. Periodontitis treatment is generally done mechanically by scaling root planning (SRP) and chemically by administering antibiotics as antibacterial agents. Specifically, ruku-ruku leaves contain several natural compounds with potential as antibacterials. This study, thus, aims to determine the potency of ruku-ruku leaf extract in inhibiting the growth of A. actinomycetemcomitans bacteria. This study employed a true experimental method in the form of a post-test-only control group design. Ruku-ruku leaf extract was prepared by a maceration method using 96% ethanol solvent and diluted with DMSO (Dimethyl Sulfoxide) to obtain concentrations of 10%, 20%, 40%, and 70%. The inhibition test was conducted using the Kirby-Bauer method, which utilized paper discs on Mueller Hinton Agar media. The zone of inhibition formed around the discs was measured. Data analysis was then performed using the One-Way ANOVA test, and the Post Hoc LSD (Least Significant Difference) test was continued. The results of this study revealed significant differences in inhibition from each treatment group. The concentration of 70% ruku-ruku leaf extract is more effective in inhibiting the growth of A. actinomycetemcomitans with an inhibition zone of 7.49 mm. Post Hoc LSD results uncovered p values of 0.001 and 0.003 (p<0.01). In conclusion, ruku-ruku leaf extract has potential antibacterial properties against the organization of A. actinomycetemcomitans.

Abstract

Introduction: Lactobacillus acidophilus is one of the dominant bacteria that plays a significant role in the development of dental caries. This bacterium produces extracellular polysaccharides that facilitate bacterial adhesion to dental plaque. One of the approaches to preventing dental caries is the use of antibacterial agents to inhibit bacterial growth in dental plaque. Averrhoa bilimbi (cucumber tree fruit) leaves have the potential to act as antibacterial agents due to the presence of active compounds that can inhibit bacterial growth. Aim: To determine the effect of Averrhoa bilimbi (cucumber tree fruit) leaf extract on inhibiting the growth of Lactobacillus acidophilus ATCC 4356. Methods: This study was an experimental laboratory with a post-test only control group design. The concentrations of Averrhoa bilimbi leaf extract used were 6.25%, 12.5%, 25%, and 50%, and a negative control of aquadest (sterile water). Results: The analysis with One Way ANNOVA showed p-value < 0.05, indicating a significant effect of Averrhoa bilimbi leaf extract in inhibiting the growth of Lactobacillus acidophilus ATCC 4356. Conclusion: Averrhoa bilimbi (cucumber tree fruit) leaf extract has an effect on inhibiting the growth of Lactobacillus acidophilus ATCC 4356. These findings suggest the potential of Averrhoa bilimbi leaf extract as a natural antibacterial agent

Abstract

Saliva plays a vital role in maintaining oral health through its cleansing, buffering, and remineralization functions. Children aged 11–12 years are at high risk of dental caries due to the frequent consumption of sugary foods and inadequate oral hygiene practices. Adequate saliva production and stable pH are key factors in preventing caries. Sugarcane (Saccharum officinarum L.), a plant rich in fiber and sucrose, has the potential to increase saliva volume and pH through mechanical stimulation. This study aims to evaluate the effects of chewing sugarcane on saliva volume and pH in children aged 11–12 years. This study used a quasi-experimental design with a one-group pre-test and post-test approach. The sample consisted of 45 elementary school students who met the inclusion criteria. The intervention involved chewing 50 grams of sugarcane for 5 minutes. Saliva volume was measured using the draining method, while saliva pH was assessed using a pH meter. Data were analyzed using the Wilcoxon statistical test. The results showed that the average saliva volume significantly increased from 0.94 ± 0.81 mL to 2.41 ± 1.86 mL (p < 0.05). However, the change in saliva pH from 7.07 ± 0.28 to 7.1 ± 0.47 was not statistically significant (p > 0.05). In conclusion, chewing sugarcane effectively increases saliva volume but does not significantly affect saliva pH. Sugarcane has potential as a natural material to enhance saliva production, which can support oral hygiene. However, the sucrose content in sugarcane should be considered due to its potential for bacterial fermentation. Further research is needed to evaluate the long-term effects of chewing sugarcane on overall oral health.

Abstract

Oil palm empty fruit bunch (OPEFB) fibers have emerged as a promising natural alternative to synthetic fibers due to their mechanical strength and biocompatibility, although research on their use as a reinforcing in composite resin remains limited. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of OPEFB fiber incorporation on the compressive strength of flowable composite resin. A true experimental design with a post-test-only control group was employed. The OPEFB fibers underwent chemical and double silane treatments and were randomly oriented prior to incorporation. Fifteen cylindrical specimens (6 mm × 12 mm) were allocated into three groups based on fiber volume fraction (0%, 1%, and 1.5%). Compressive strength was tested using a universal testing machine following ASTM D-695 standards. Data were analyzed using one-way ANOVA (p < 0.05) followed by a post-hoc Least Significant Difference (LSD) test. The mean compressive strength of flowable composite resins at 0%, 1%, and 1.5% OPEFB fiber volume fractions were 261.99 ± 17.64, 301.20 ± 19.26, 368.52 ± 14.90 MPa. One-way ANOVA test showed that the mean compressive strength in the three groups was significantly different (p < 0.05). The post-hoc LSD test showed significant differences (p < 0.05) among all groups. This study concluded that the incorporation of OPEFB fiber can enhance the compressive strength of flowable composite resin, with the highest reinforcement observed at the 1.5% OPEFB fiber volume fraction.
