Abstract

Abstract. Effective communication between parents and children diagnosed with mental issues plays an important role in assisting their healing and recovery process. Openness in communication can create a safe and supportive environment, which will make the child feel accepted and understood. On the other hand, with effective communication, parents can also better understand the challenges faced by their children, strengthen emotional bonds, and increase mutual trust. This study explores and analyzes the communication styles applied by parents to children diagnosed with mental issues. This study aims to understand how parents' communication styles can influence the well-being of children with mental issues, as well as explore communicative strategies that can improve the quality of interactions. This research method uses qualitative with a case study approach. Data collection techniques used through interviews, observation, and documentation. The purpose of this research is to find out the communication used between parents and children diagnosed with mental issues. The results of this study suggest that communication styles that are empathic, open, and supportive are able to create a safer and more trusted environment for children. So that children can be more open and trusting. Conversely, communication styles that are authoritarian, less empathic, or stigmatizing can worsen the child's condition and limit the child's empowerment. Abstrak. Komunikasi yang efektif antara orang tua dengan anak yang didiagnosa mental issue memiliki peran penting dalam mendampingi proses penyembuhan dan pemulihan mereka. Keterbukaan dalam berkomunikasi dapat menciptakan lingkungan yang aman dan mendukung, yang akan membuat anak merasa diterima dan dipahami. Di sisi lain, dengan komunikasi efektif orang tua juga dapat memahami lebih baik mengenai tantangan yang dihadapi anak, memperkuat ikatan emosional, dan meningkatkan rasa saling percaya. Penelitian ini menggali dan menganalisis gaya komunikasi yang diterapkan oleh orangtua terhadap anak yang didiagnosa mengalami mental issue. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk memahami bagaimana gaya komunikasi orangtua dapat memengaruhi kesejahteraan anak yang mengalami masalah mental, serta mengeksplorasi strategi komunikatif yang dapat meningkatkan kualitas interaksi. Metode penelitian ini menggunakan kualitatif dengan pendekatan studi kasus. Teknik pengumpulan data yang digunakan melalui wawancara, observasi, dan dokumentasi. Tujuan Penelitian ini adalah untuk mengetahui komunikasi yang digunakan antara orang tua dengan anak yang didiagnosa mental issue. Hasil penelitian ini mengemukakan bahwa gaya komunikasi yang bersifat empatik, terbuka, dan mendukung mampu menciptakan lingkungan yang lebih aman dan terpercaya bagi anak. Sehingga anak dapat lebih terbuka dan pecaya. Sebaliknya, gaya komunikasi yang otoriter, kurang empatik, atau stigmatizing dapat memperburuk kondisi anak dan membatasi pembicaraan terbuka.

Abstract

Background: The development process of digital literacy is gradual and significantly influenced by parenting style. How parents raise their children significantly impacts how well-trained adolescents are in media-related behaviour. Purpose: The study aims to examine the relationship between the digital literacy levels of adolescent - students at the Faculty of Communication Science, Universitas Islam Bandung - and the parenting styles they experience within their families. Methods: This research employed a quantitative approach within the positivistic paradigm. It involved a sample of 120 students. Results: This study revealed that adolescents from families with authoritative parenting styles exhibited higher levels of digital literacy than those from authoritarian, permissive and neglectful families. Meanwhile, adolescents from neglectful family backgrounds demonstrated the lowest degree of digital literacy. These findings provide a foundation for developing adolescent digital literacy and, consequently, promoting cyber wellness by achieving a balance between online and offline life. Conclusion: This research indicated no significant relationship between parenting style and students’ digital literacy at the Faculty of Communication, Universitas Islam Bandung. Implications: Nevertheless, it is worth noting that students raised within a family with an authoritative parenting style tend to exhibit higher digital literacy abilities, although the difference is not statistically significant. This study also introduces a comparative theory, highlighting the contrast between students, who are digital natives, and their parents, who can be considered digital immigrants.

Abstract

Abstract. Drama series is one of the mass communication media that can package communication messages uniquely. My Liberation Notes is a South Korean drama series that tells the realistic daily life of three siblings by highlighting the personality differences of introverted and extroverted characters. In our society, there are misconceptions that judge a person's communication skills based on personality type. This study aims to determine the communication portrayed by characters with introverted and extroverted personalities in the drama series My Liberation Notes in intrapersonal, interpersonal, and group forms. The method used in this research is qualitative method with narrative approach of Seymour Chatman model through action, event, character, and setting components. The results show that introverted characters dominate intrapersonal communication scenes, while extroverted characters dominate group communication scenes. However, in the form of interpersonal communication, both introverted and extroverted characters portray a balanced role in the interaction scene between individuals. The characteristics of introverted characters tend to be closed, like to be alone, and a small circle of friends, while the characteristics of extroverted characters tend to be open or sensitive to the surrounding environment, adaptable, and happy to socialize in a large circle of friends. In the communication process, introverted characters portray individuals who think a lot before acting so that they are more careful in speaking and become creative and imaginative individuals. On the other hand, extroverts portray individuals who speak or act before thinking and are confident, assertive, and like to lead. Abstrak. Serial drama merupakan salah satu media komunikasi massa yang dapat mengemas pesan komunikasi secara unik. My Liberation Notes adalah salah satu serial drama asal Korea Selatan yang menceritakan keseharian realistis dari tiga bersaudara dengan menonjolkan perbedaan kepribadian tokoh introvert dan ekstrovert. Di masyarakat kita, terdapat miskonsepsi yang menilai kemampuan komunikasi seseorang berdasarkan tipe kepribadian. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui komunikasi yang digambarkan oleh tokoh dengan kepribadian introvert dan ekstrovert dalam serial drama My Liberation Notes dalam bentuk intrapersonal, interpersonal, dan kelompok. Metode yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini adalah metode kualitatif dengan pendekatan naratif model Seymour Chatman melalui komponen aksi, kejadian, karakter, dan latar. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa tokoh introvert lebih mendominasi scene komunikasi intrapersonal, sedangkan tokoh ekstrovert lebih mendominasi scene komunikasi kelompok. Namun, dalam bentuk komunikasi interpersonal, baik tokoh introvert maupun tokoh ekstrovert menggambarkan peran yang seimbang dalam scene interaksi antar individu. Karakteristik tokoh introvert cenderung tertutup, menyukai kesendirian, dan lingkup pertemanan yang kecil, sedangkan karakteristik tokoh ekstrovert cenderung terbuka atau peka dengan lingkungan sekitarnya, mudah beradaptasi, dan senang bersosialisasi di lingkup pertemanan besar. Dalam proses komunikasi, tokoh introvert menggambarkan individu yang banyak berpikir sebelum bertindak sehingga mereka lebih berhati-hati dalam berbicara serta menjadi individu yang kreatif dan imajinatif. Di sisi lain, tokoh ekstrovert menggambarkan individu yang berbicara atau bertindak sebelum berpikir panjang dan memiliki sifat percaya diri, tegas, dan senang memimpin.

Abstract

Abstract. Amid escalating Israeli attacks on Palestine, widely regarded as war crimes due to the high number of civilian casualties, including children, several nations, including Indonesia, have responded by initiating boycotts of Israeli products. In solidarity with Palestine, the Indonesian Ulema Council (MUI) issued a fatwa urging the public to boycott Israeli products and those supporting them. This move has sparked significant public debate and discussion, particularly on social media platforms such as Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram, where robust interactions are shaping public opinion on the boycott. In this context, this study aims to explore the impact of social media campaigns on consumer attitudes toward Israeli products in the digital era. Employing a quantitative research approach, data were gathered through surveys conducted with 100 randomly selected students in Bandung. The findings reveal that social media dissemination significantly influences cognitive, affective, and conative changes in consumer behavior. This suggests that social media campaigns play a pivotal role in shaping consumer attitudes, reflecting the complex interplay of personal values, political stances, and economic considerations. Furthermore, the study highlights the powerful role of social media in amplifying political messages, mobilizing support for social causes, and shaping perceptions on a global scale. The insights gained from this research are crucial for stakeholders, policymakers, academics, and the general public, offering a deeper understanding of how digital campaigns can drive shifts in consumer behavior within a politically charged environment.

Abstract

This paper discusses the development of social entrepreneurship empowerment for individuals with lupus and limitations in vision through Asset-Based Community Development (ABCD), defined based on identifying their substantial aspects. After defining the characteristics of conditions of individuals with disadvantaged health, such as lupus and low vision, an ABCD approach is developed. The approach is planned within the framework of business development using digital media, carrying out five key steps—Discovery, Dream, Design, Define, and Destiny. It is argued that the ABCD concept can be effective in the continuity of the empowerment process, particularly in helping individuals with health inequalities. This study took place in collaboration with an NGO, Syamsi Dhuha Foundation, which aims to assist individuals with lupus and low vision to better participate in community life. The community program views social entrepreneurship as an entry point, where they are introduced to the concept of business strategy. Quantitative and qualitative studies are conducted to examine the program’s effectiveness. A descriptive statistic is employed to see the changes in the condition of the participants, which suggests that such programs have a significant contribution in providing insights. Meanwhile, the intensive discussion with the participants helps them identify potentials and strategies in entrepreneurship in digital marketing based on five key steps, i.e., looking for a strategy so that better user interface and experience in digital maneuvering for individuals with impaired health conditions, such as lupus and low-vision, can be developed. It is also demonstrated that continuous assistance can effectively strengthen the empowerment process, providing a more appropriate and meaningful strategy for individuals with disadvantaged health conditions.

Abstract

Social media has seamlessly integrated into the daily lives of countless individuals, captivating users who spend significant portions of their time scrolling through their feeds and interacting with their online connections. This digital era, however, has brought to light a darker side – the prevalence of hate speech and abusive behavior, notably among Indonesian netizens. This study seeks to identify and scrutinize official Instagram accounts of certain celebrities, focusing on the presence of hate speech. Employing a quantitative research method with content analysis, the research centers on comments made by fans. Data will be gathered, coded, and subjected to a reliability test for categorization. The findings underscore a disturbingly high incidence of hate speech on Instagram accounts, highlighting the need for intervention from multiple stakeholders, particularly within the realms of communication science and prophetic communication. This research offers invaluable insights into social media usage and paves the way for corrective measures, education, and evaluation, ultimately striving to foster a more positive and constructive social media environment for all users.
