Abstract

Sea cucumber (Holothuria atra) has been traditionally used for wound treatment; however, scientific evidence supporting its effectiveness in burn wound healing remains limited. This study presents a novel investigation of the wound healing potential of H. atra extract sourced specifically from the Talaud Islands and formulated into multiple topical ointment concentrations for second-degree burn treatment. The study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of H. atra extract ointment in accelerating second degree burn wound healing in mice. The extract was obtained by maceration using 95% ethanol and formulated into ointments at concentrations of 10%, 15%, and 20%. Twenty-five male mice were randomly assigned to five groups: positive control (1% silver sulfadiazine), negative control, and three treatment groups receiving H. atra extract ointments at different concentrations. Parameters observed included wound diameter reduction, physical characteristics of the ointment, phytochemical screening, and pain-related behavioral responses. The results demonstrated that the 15% H. atra extract ointment produced the highest wound healing effectiveness, with a wound contraction rate of 96% on day 14, followed by the 10% (84%) and 20% (75%) formulations. Phytochemical analysis revealed the presence of flavonoids, saponins, steroids, and alkaloids, which are associated with anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, and tissue regenerative activities. The ointment formulations met homogeneity and organoleptic requirements, although their spreadability values were below the recommended standard. These findings highlight the novelty of identifying an optimal concentration (15%) of H. atra extract ointment that provides superior burn wound healing activity compared with other tested concentrations. In conclusion, the 15% H. atra extract ointment shows potential as an alternative topical therapy for second-degree burn wounds.

Abstract

Indonesia is an archipelagic country with a tropical climate so it has a large forest area. High rainfall and sufficient solar irradiation make the diversity of living things both flora and fauna very high. This study aims to identify and determine the level of diversity of forestry plants in the forest area of Manado State University, North Sulawesi. This research will be carried out in April - May 2023 in the forest area of Manado State University, North Sulawesi. Sampling in this study was carried out using the Purposive Sampling (Judgmental Sampling) technique with 9 plots in 3 observation stations. The results of the study found that in all sampling plots, there were 17 individuals of forestry plants with 9 species. The highest Important Value Index (IVI) belongs to the species Petrocarpus indicus with an IVI of 61%. The Shannon Winner diversity index H = 2.07 was found to be in the medium category.

Abstract

Water hyacinth (Eichhornia crassipes) is a herbaceous plant known to accumulate heavy metals from polluted waters. In Lake Tondano, this plant grows abundantly and helps reduce lead (Pb) levels through bioremediation. This study aimed to identify the genera of endophytic bacteria from water hyacinth (E. crassipes) that have potential as bioremediation agents for lead. This study employed an exploratory, descriptive, quantitative laboratory approach. Samples were collected from E. crassipes plants found in Lake Tondano at three different locations. The isolation method used was direct plating. The research stages included bacterial isolation, lead resistance testing at 50 ppm, lead reduction testing at 10, 20, and 30 ppm, lead concentration analysis, and bacterial identification using morphological and biochemical tests. Three isolates (EG.A1.5, EG.A2.4, and EG.D3.4) were found to be resistant and capable of reducing lead levels. The reduction percentages reached 35.9%, 72.2%, and 55.5%, respectively. Based on morphological and biochemical characteristics, the bacterial genera of three isolates were identified as Salmonella, Enterobacter, and Bacillus.

ARTICLE HIGLIGHTSMangrove species like Acanthus ilicifolius and Avicennia marina aid food and health.Correlation and PCA reveal food, medicine, and firewood as key use dimensions.Location trends: Sondaken for firewood, Baboi for medicine, Mantehage for knowledge. This study supports mangrove ethnobotany and promotes community bioconservation.ABSTRACTMangrove ecosystems play a vital ecological and socio-economic role along coastal regions. However, their sustainable utilization faces significant challenges due to habitat degradation and modernization. This study aimed to characterize the ethnobotanical utilization of mangroves by coastal communities within Bunaken National Marine Park (BNMP) and its surrounding small islands, while exploring their potential for food and medicinal bioprospecting. Data were collected through questionnaire surveys, in-depth interviews with informants, and field observations within coastal communities in four locations such as Bahoi, Likupang Barat District, North Minahasa, Sondaken, Tatapaan District, South, Alung Banua, Bunaken Archipelago District, Manado, and Mantehage, Wori District, North Minahasa Regency. The data were subsequently analyzed descriptively, followed by Principal Component Analysis (PCA) and heatmap visualization. The findings revealed that specific species such as Acanthus ilicifolius and Avicennia marina occupy central roles as sources of food and traditional medicine, emphasizing the close integration between subsistence needs and community health. Correlation analysis and PCA indicated that the categories of food, medicine, and firewood represent the dominant dimensions of utilization, while cultural functions and species knowledge serve as secondary differentiators. Location-based variations underscored the heterogeneity of utilization practices, with Sondaken being more prominent in firewood use, Bahoi in ethnomedicine, and Mantehage in biodiversity knowledge. These findings highlight the necessity of mangrove management that extends beyond ecological conservation to include local wisdom as a foundation for bioprospecting, thereby supporting food security, health, and the well-being of coastal communities. Thus, this research significantly contributed to the literature on mangrove ethnobotany and provided a scientific framework for community-based bioconservation strategies in Indonesia.
