Abstract

Abstract: Throughout the ages, the discourses on leadership concepts in Islam have been dynamic. One of the factors is the debate between Islamic scholars on hadiths related to leadership. Ibn Kamāl, a scholar who was also a Turkish bureaucrat, was the first cleric who gave commentaries on hadits in Riyāḍu al-Ṣālihīn, including those in leadership theme. He was close to the throne during his life, and some said he had released some fatwas that enabled the sultan’s policies. Having learned about his unique background, this study aims to provide explanations about Ibn Kamal’s concept of leadership based on his commentaries on hadits in Riyāḍu al-Ṣālihīn and the influence of the political milieu in the hadith commentaries. Therefore, this study employs a thematic and historical-sociological approach to analyze the data. It results in some findings that according to Ibn Kamal, leadership is a process performed by its elements to achieve the collective purpose. Leadership expressed by the term imārah refers to leadership within the scope of government. Therefore, leaders and people must fulfil their obligations to realise good governance. Although this syarah was written in a context in which Ibn Kamal was very close to the ruler, even he was part of it, but the political context did not influence him in the explanation of the leadership hadith he wrote.  Key Words: Ibn Kamāl, Imārah, hadith commentary Abstrak: Selama berabad-abad, dinamika tentang konsep kepemimpinan dalam Islam telah diperdebatkan.

Abstract

The rise of Islamic militancy among Indonesian Salafis closely relates to their literal understanding of the hadith as the resource of their religious doctrines, with Muḥammad Nāṣiruddīn al-Albānī (1914-1999) as the most referenced figure. This article analyses how the thought of al-Albānī on hadith impacted Islamic militancy development in Indonesia. The writer argues that al-Albānī’s pupils support the rapid spread of his thinking on the hadith with their book publishers, organisations, and Salafi pesantrens. Meanwhile, the impact of al-Albānī’s thoughts on the Salafi movement in Indonesia appears in three notions: the domination of the textual understanding of the hadiths, the growth of al-Lā Madhhabiyyah (not relying on any classical madhab of fiqh), and the taṣfiyah and tarbiyah program. According to al-Albānī, the program of taṣfiyah and tarbiyah is the only way to build an Islamic society, which is a condition for the establishment of the Islamic Sharia and the Islamic State (Daulah Islāmiyyah).[Munculnya gerakan Islam militan di Indonesia tidak bisa dilepaskan dari model pemahaman hadis yang literal dengan tokoh rujukan Muḥammad Nāṣiruddīn al-Albānī (1914-1999).

Abstract

The methodology can be used in the interpretation of the Qur'an is ra’y, means ijtihad. In order to produce a correct methodologically interpretation, ra’y should be accompanied by certain requirements and methodological steps, such as knowing the rules of interpretation and linguistic sciences. Al-Kasysyaf is one of many interpretation books have been criticized by the strong ideological tendencies of its commentator. It can be seen in the interpretation of verses which have ideological content. Since Al-Zamakhsyari, the commentator, was also known by his expertise in language and literature, it raises a question, what if the verses contain ideology are not possible to be interpreted according to i’tizal when follows the rules of linguistic? This question is what the author intends to examine. This study aims to the implementation of the rule of marji‘ al-dlamir in verses mention the word man yasya’. After using both linguistic approach and theological approach to determine the direction of the interpretation produced by Al-Zamakhsyari, the study found that the rule of marji‘ al-dlamir is still applied thoroughly. However, the result of interpretation still has the nuance of i’tizal because of the takwil used by Al-Zamakhsyari.

Abstract

This article discusses the conflict resolution by Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) in the case of the placement of the Black Stone, an important event before his prophethood. Through the perspective of conflict resolution theory, this study aims to explore how Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) successfully resolved the dispute between the Quraysh tribes. This research is a literature study employing a qualitative analysis model to interpret the actions of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) in resolving the conflict over the placement of the Black Stone. The analysis indicates that Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) applied an approach reflecting the principles of effective conflict resolution, such as neutrality, a deep understanding of the conflicting parties, justice, and creativity in finding solutions. This study also reflects on the relevance of Prophet Muhammad's (PBUH) approach in contemporary conflict resolution. The theoretical implications of this study enrich conflict resolution scholarship by integrating Islamic perspectives into modern theoretical frameworks while affirming that Islamic teachings through the Quran and the exemplary practices of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) provide a holistic foundation for sustainable conflict resolution.

Abstract

Ḥadīṡ regarding the punishment of riddah is often debated because partial understandings tend to cause misunderstandings, such as the view that Islam does not provide freedom of religion. A partial understanding of the ḥadīṡ of riddah punishment is often considered contrary to the values of Islamic justice and creates a negative perception of Islamic teachings in modern society. This study aims to analyze the difference between partial and comprehensive approaches in understanding the ḥadīṡ about riddah punishment. Using a qualitative method based on library research, this study examines primary and secondary literature through a descriptive-analytical approach. The study results show that the partial approach tends to ignore other related ḥadīṡ, socio-historical contexts, and maqāsid asy-syarī’ah principles, resulting in rigid interpretations. Instead, a comprehensive approach emphasizes the importance of understanding ḥadīṡ in the context of maqāsid asy-syarī’ah, such as maintaining societal stability and religious freedom. This study recommends using a comprehensive approach to understanding the ḥadīṡ considered controversial, so their interpretation is more relevant to the principles of justice and humanity in Islam, especially in the modern era that upholds the value of freedom.

Abstract

The hadith that mentions women, donkeys, and dogs can cancel prayers when passing in front of people who pray has caused controversy, mainly because it is considered to contain gender bias. This study aims to examine the validity of the matan hadith through the approach of matan criticism according to al-Adlabi in Manhaj Naqd al-Matn 'Inda 'Ulamā' al-Ḥadīth al-Nabawī. The method employed is a literature study that involves tracing the hadith in al-Kutub al-Tis'ah and analyzing it based on four criteria: conformity with the Qur'an, sahih hadith, the Prophet's sirah, rationality, and historical context, as well as editorial feasibility. The results of the analysis show that, although the sanad of the hadith is considered authentic, it contains problems: it is not in line with the Qur'an, it contradicts Aisha's history and the Prophet's practice, and it juxtaposes women with animals in the context of worship. This study emphasizes the importance of critically analyzing the hadith so that our understanding of it remains in harmony with the values of justice, common sense, and humanity in Islam.

Abstract

This research examines the strategic role of the Sunan collections in the history of hadith codification, which serve as the second source of Islamic law after the Qur’an. The Sunan works Sunan Abī Dāwūd, Sunan al-Tirmiżī, Sunan al-Nasā’ī, and Sunan Ibn Mājah, were arranged systematically according to chapters of jurisprudence. This structure makes them central references in Islamic law (ahkām), as it facilitates scholars and jurists in locating and interpreting hadiths relevant to legal issues. The study employs a qualitative-descriptive method through library research, using both primary sources such as hadith texts and classical scholarship, as well as secondary sources from modern literature. Findings indicate that each Sunan collection has unique features in selection, classification, and reliability of narrations. Sunan al-Nasā’ī is known for its strict standards, mostly including authentic hadiths, while Sunan Ibn Mājah contains a wider range of reports, including weak and even fabricated narrations. Sunan al-Tirmiżī provides evaluations of hadith status along with scholarly opinions, and Sunan Abī Dāwūd is highly regarded for its authoritative legal narrations. Collectively, the Sunan serve not only as documentation of hadith but also as methodological tools that support verification, classification, and systematic derivation of Islamic law.

Abstract

The issue of moral and ethical degradation in the use of social media in the digital era has increasingly intensified, as evidenced by the widespread circulation of hoaxes, hate speech, and other forms of destructive communication behavior. This study aims to analyze the principles of wise social media engagement based on the teachings of the hadith of the Prophet Muhammad saw, as a foundation for digital ethics from an Islamic perspective. The research employs a qualitative approach using thematic (maudhu‘i) analysis of hadiths related to communication ethics and social behavior, complemented by content analysis to contextualize the messages of the hadith within contemporary digital realities. The findings identify four operational hadith-based digital ethical principles: (1) information integrity, manifested in the obligation of tabayyun to counter hoaxes and misinformation; (2) control of digital expression, emphasizing the prohibition of destructive anger and hate speech; (3) public communication etiquette, encompassing guidance to speak kindly, avoid ghibah, and uphold mutual dignity; and (4) social responsibility, namely the obligation to disseminate benefit and avoid content that causes social harm. The contribution of this study lies in the formulation of the “Islamic Digital Wisdom” model as a comprehensive digital ethics framework that integrates hadith values into the dynamics of modern cyberspace as a moral solution for social media users.

Abstract

Abstract The increasingly alarming environmental crisis demands a new approach that is not only technical, but also moral and spiritual. Islam as a comprehensive religion has ecological ethical guidelines sourced from the Qur'an and the hadith of the Prophet Muhammad. This research aims to uncover the values of environmental conservation in hadith and interpret it through the views of classical and contemporary hadith scholars. Using a thematic analysis approach and qualitative-descriptive methods, this study examines a number of hadiths related to the prohibition of polluting the environment, the recommendation to plant trees, cleanliness, and human responsibility as a caliph on earth. The results of the analysis show that the hadiths of the Prophet contain ecological principles such as the prevention of damage (dar' al-mafsadah), the preservation of life, cleanliness as worship, and the ecological mandate of humans. The interpretations of scholars such as al-Nawawi, Ibn Hajar, al-Qurṭubī, and Yusuf al-Qaradawi reinforce that environmental ethics in Islam is rooted in maqāṣid al-shari'ah, specifically ḥifẓ al-nafs, ḥifẓ al-māl, and ḥifẓ al-bi'ah. This research contributes to expanding the Islamic ecotheological paradigm and provides a normative basis for the development of environmental policies based on religious values. Abstract

Existing studies on spiritual leadership often emphasize theological legitimacy or charismatic authority, while paying limited attention to the role of social reputation and ethical formation as foundational elements in the emergence of religious leadership. This gap highlights the need to examine how integrity and honesty function as forms of social capital that enable the transformation of individuals into recognized spiritual leaders. Accordingly, this study aims to analyze the role of social reputation and ethical preparation in establishing the legitimacy of spiritual leadership, with a primary focus on the Prophet Muhammad and a comparative perspective involving other religious figures. This research employs a qualitative methodology using historical and comparative approaches, based on the analysis of classical texts, historical archives, and relevant narrative sources. The findings demonstrate that a consistently maintained reputation for integrity and honesty constitutes a critical form of social capital that facilitates the transition from social roles to spiritual leadership. Moreover, mediation practices, economic engagement, and contemplative activities are identified as key factors that shape leaders’ ethical character and reinforce their legitimacy. This study contributes a holistic conceptual framework that integrates social capital theory with the study of spiritual leadership, thereby enriching the discourse in the sociology of religion and leadership ethics. The findings further imply that integrity and honesty are not merely personal virtues, but fundamental drivers of social trust, religious authority, and transformative leadership across diverse religious contexts.
