Abstract

The resistance to patriarchal domination in Japanese and Balinese societies between 1989 and 2019 is reflected in various literary works that portray women's struggles against restrictive social norms. In this vein, this study compares the forms and meanings of resistance depicted in the Japanese novels Out by Natsuo Kirino and Convenience Store Woman by Sayaka Murata with the Balinese novels Tempurung and Kenanga by Oka Rusmini. Using qualitative research with a cultural studies approach, it identifies two shared forms of resistance: rejection of traditional gender roles and struggle for bodily autonomy. Differences appear in the forms, with radical resistance in the Japanese novels and subversive resistance in the Balinese novels, and in the backgrounds, where structural oppression shapes the Japanese texts while traditional customs influence the Balinese texts. Ultimately, these narratives critique both Japanese patriarchy and Balinese customary traditions that constrain women’s identities and choices.

Abstract

The article examines digital nomadism with a focus toward migration elements utilising data analytics, bservation, and interviews. It looks at the reasons digital nomads moved to Bali, stressing important elements such as mobility, cost, lifestyle convenience, and culture. The study arranges and visualises these components to spot trends among the digital nomads. Results highlight the effects on global tourist marketing plans and migration policy, therefore providing information for academics, travel agents, and legislators. Through an analysis of digital nomads’ behaviour, expectations, and goals, this study helps to grasp better migration’s motivating factors and shapes informed migration policy. The findings above further help digital nomads by highlighting their specific motivation and preferences. The research additionally proposes strategies for promoting sustainability and maximising the benefits of tourism activities. This study provides a basis for understanding the impact of migration on atypical lifestyles.

Abstract

This research examines Mahabharata epic puppet (wayang) comics, created by three renowned comic artists: R. A. Kosasih, Teguh Santosa, and Gun Gun, who respectively have Sundanese, Javanese, and Balinese cultural backgrounds, through the lens of Indonesian identity articulation. The comics of wayang which translates ‘puppet’, are a distinctive genre that employs panels to depict puppetry tales. While being influenced by foreign cultures such as American comic art and the Indian Mahabharata epic, these artists intentionally incorporate Indonesian elements into their works. This is evident from 1955 to the present. This research used a critical qualitative descriptive approach to investigate the articulation of the identity discourse within the cultural realm of comics. The comic works of the artists are analysed through articulation and hegemony theory. The research concludes that the artists’ works establish a cultural connection and relate cultural comic art to Indonesian readers. This not only constructs Indonesian identity but also promotes cultural diversity.
