Abstract

The escalating prevalence of diabetes represents a critical challenge to global health and quality of life. Indonesia, particularly the Sulawesi region, is home to a diverse array of endemic plants with potential as sources of novel antidiabetic compounds. However, traditional preclinical models for evaluating these candidates are limited by high costs and lengthy timelines. The aim of this study was to explore the antidiabetic potential of Cordia myxa and Syzygium malaccense extracts using Drosophila melanogaster as a novel, cost-effective and efficient in vivo model. Hyperglycemia was induced in D. melanogaster larvae through a high-sugar diet, and the plant extracts were incorporated into the larval diets at concentrations ranging from 0.3125% to 2.5%. Phenotypic parameters, including body size, body weight, crawling activity, and hemolymph glucose levels, were evaluated, and the expression of metabolism-related genes (dilp2, dilp5, and srl) was analyzed using RT-qPCR. This study found that C. myxa and S. malaccense extracts improved crawling activity and body size in hyperglycemic larvae. Notably, C. myxa extract significantly reduced hemolymph glucose levels (p<0.01), increased body weight (p<0.01), and upregulated the expression of metabolic genes such as dilp2 (p<0.001), dilp5 (p<0.001), and srl (p<0.0001). In contrast, S. malaccense extract showed less pronounced effects, highlighting the efficacy of C. myxa extract in alleviating hyperglycemia and restoring metabolic homeostasis. The study highlights that C. myxa extract demonstrated promising antidiabetic properties in the Drosophila model, underscoring the utility of this model for early-stage antidiabetic drug screening and supporting further preclinical investigation into the therapeutic potential of C. myxa for managing hyperglycemia.

Abstract

This study comprehensively examines the application of taxation in special transactions in Indonesia, including Build-Operate-Transfer (BOT) cooperation models, finance leases with purchase options, joint operations, and foundations. The research is motivated by the complexity of regulations and the challenges in applying tax rules to special transactions commonly used by business entities and nonprofit organizations in Indonesia. This study employs a descriptive qualitative method with a literature study approach, reviewing laws and regulations, academic literature, and previous research findings to gain a deep understanding of the normative aspects and practical implementation of taxation in the field. The findings indicate that the taxation of BOT schemes has gained legal certainty through Government Regulation No. 34/2017, which classifies all income as rental income subject to a final tax of 10% based on market value or the highest NJOP (government-assessed property value). For finance leases with purchase options, tax regulations specifically address income tax and VAT treatment; however, challenges remain in practice, particularly in asset depreciation and expense recognition, especially in cases of bankruptcy or changes in the lease term. Joint operations face the risk of double taxation due to the lack of specific regulations governing intra-KSO (joint operation) transactions, leading to potential tax redundancy and inefficiencies in tax administration. Meanwhile, foundations engaged in the education sector have fulfilled their administrative tax obligations; however, the utilization of available tax facilities remains suboptimal, resulting in less-than-optimal income tax efficiency. These findings highlight the need for regulatory harmonization, enhanced outreach, and capacity building for business actors and organizations to better understand and utilize tax provisions for special transactions. This research is expected to serve as a useful reference for stakeholders in supporting relevant policy analysis and formulation aimed at improving tax effectiveness and compliance in Indonesia.

Abstract

This study aims to critically examine the application of taxation to various forms of special transactions that often occur in practice in Indonesia, namely the Build Operate Transfer (BOT) scheme, leasing with option rights, joint operations (JO), and foundation legal entities. These four forms of transactions have unique characteristics that are not always in line with general tax principles, thus creating complexity in the imposition, deduction, reporting, and application of taxation. The research approach used is qualitative descriptive with data collection techniques through literature studies, tax regulation documentation, and critical analysis of academic literature. The results of the study indicate that there are still inconsistencies between accounting and taxation treatments, weak recording, and unpreparedness of actors in fulfilling tax obligations substantively. The BOT scheme often results in recognition of income between the private sector and the government; leasing with option rights creates different treatments between lessees and lessors in terms of VAT and Income Tax; JO faces administrative challenges due to the absence of a separate NPWP; while foundations face the risk of fiscal correction due to the combination of social and commercial activities without limitations on capable accounts. This study recommends increasing the capacity of tax human resources, reformulating technical regulations, and integrating a digital-based reporting system that is more responsive to the characteristics of special transactions.
