Abstract

Being a ronggeng dancer constitutes a turning point in a life to be at an upper level of humanity. It is similar to Superman who needs a special stone to be in his superiority, and other heroes with their specialties. A ronggeng, a Javanese traditional dancer, should be gifted with an indang spirit believed to be the dancer maker. For Srintil case, in Ronggeng Dukuh Paruk novel, she is at a much higher level compared to the others. She is the last to live in the shift of the culture. This study aimed to reveal Srintil’s superhero characteristics and what destroyed her heroism. It is a qualitative study using the heroism concept. The techniques of collecting the data were reading, note-taking, and documenting in the form of narration and dialogue taken from the novel in accordance with the research problem. The finding showed there are four criteria that made Srintil a superhero for Dukuh Paruk’s people: how she obtained a superpower; her journey to be a ronggeng; her willingness to help others; and how she sacrifices her life. However, there were men of the super culture who destroyed Srintil heroism. The indang had also prevented her from realizing her dreams, including having a true lover and having a family. Furthermore, it only left her with miseries by ended up in prison and insanity.

Abstract

This paper aimed to explain a practical programme utilised to enhance the students' English skills by designing English Islamic-tagged-media. It was relatively considerable due to low proficiency, low exposures, and psychological problems the students have, which undermine the ability. Therefore, the programme was concerned with the more straightforward and uncomplicated direction the students may perform for better English proficiency. The programme involved 23 students of high schools who reside in the two Muhammadiyah orphanages of Purwokerto residence. It principally conceptualised and integrated the English skills and the religious mission of Islamic values to produce the disciples of Islam and Muhammadiyah. Furthermore, the programme used a workshop method to intensively train and guide the students to design the English tag-lines that express the Islamic values on T-shirts' media. As a result, despite the difficulties in creating the expressions and printing the T-shirts, the programme has successfully run with the excellent performance the students made. They have shown their ideas and creativities in doing some exposures to their English skills and their Islamic knowledgeability

Abstract

The novel Ronggeng Dukuh Paruk (RDP) came out in 1982, when the new order regime was still firmly established. One of the important criticisms in the work was the 'incorrect' handling of communism by the government at that time following the eruption of the G30S/PKI history. The author of the novel tries to bring a different view of the issue. This paper tries to present how the original Banyumas personified the political turmoil-how the laypeople interpreted the events that had consumed them as victims, or the sacrificed. Based on the recurrent reading of the Indonesian-language RDP novel and Javanese language Banyumasan, the authors firmly state that the people of Dukuh Paruk are merely victims of the outside world. People of Dukuh Paruk have no idea what they have to do, other than that they want to perpetuate the tradition they are proud of i.e. Ronggeng. Nor do they blame or think that they are people outside of those who have committed crimes against them. The disaster that befall them is none other due to their mistakes that they do not run the rituals that must be done before performances of ronggeng. The old people of Dukuh Paruk also realized that the disaster called pageblug had been signaled by the appearance of the latitude of the cubes (comets), and they had ignored the cue. Thus, pageblug should be accepted. Against the innocence of clean thought, the author asserts that something is wrong with them, systematically practiced by the regime at that time. He agreed that the coup was false; but the way in which the state deals with such problems is also unjustifiable. The state has clearly punished many Indonesians without trial, and killed thousands of innocent people.

Abstract

Rama-Sintha is a very legendary story, however this story is always worth-watching in various forms—film, dancing, drama, novel even in cartoon. Seno Gumira Ajidarma, is one of the writers who retells the story from different point of view. Kitab Omong Kosong,  referred to as KOK, tells about Sintha's lawsuit against Rama's love. The novel no longer tells about the epic of their legendary love story, but it criticizes  love and virginity-orientation in a patriarchal culture. This is due to the reason what Shinta has experienced in KOK, representing the imbalance of woman in society. This research will use content analysis to reveal the KOK using feminist’s perspectives. This study will employ a feminist point of view to see a biased association of  love to  virginity. In patriarchal culture, virginity becomes one of the standards to value one’s love. The result of this research shows that KOK,is a deconstruction of Rama-Shinta love story, to a story full of anger, arrogance, and jealousy. As lelanang (man), Shinta is a symbol of power. Her  kidnapping by Rahwana is a humiliation against Rama’s dignity. Thus,  to receive  her  back as his wife, Rama asked her  to prove her purity and loyalty. This is shows unequal power between Rama and Shinta, as two lovers. She was a true victim of patriarchy. Her choice to disappear (moksa) is a  resistance struggle against his beloved husband’s domination.DOWNLOAD ABSTRACT
