Abstract

EFFORTS TO IMPROVE EARLY DETECTION OF BREAST CANCER IN CIJULANG 1 VOCATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL, PANGANDARAN REGENCY. The high mortality rate of breast cancer (BC) patients in Indonesia is associated with conditions of most patients come to doctor in an advanced stage of BC. This is due to the low BC awareness of Indonesian women. This community service program (PPM) is intended to increase knowledge of adolescent women about early detection of BC. This action was conducted by BC awareness workshop to 114 female students of Vocational High School (SMK) 1 Cijulang, Pangandaran district, West Java. The profile of participants showed that 64% of participants are 17 years old and mostly from Cijulang and Cimerak sub-districts. In addition, the majority of participants were not aware of BC, indicated by lack of knowledge of BC signs and symptoms (97%), and low confident of doing breast self-examination (BSE) (30%). Moreover, there were 7% of the participants were smoking which is known to be one of the major risk factors for BC. These findings point out conducting a program for increasing BC awareness among students. The program was managed by mini-lecture that focuses on BC risk factors, BC early detection and BSE (SADARI) using videos and simulation on a mannequin. This program was expected to have an impact on their families, indirectly. Ultimately, this will increase the finding of new cases of BC which will increase their life expectancy.

Abstract

Degenerative diseases are associated with obesity. Body mass index (BMI) measurement is a way to measure disease risk, howeverfat mass more explain metabolic conditions associated with degenerative diseases. Research shows consistent relation between these two parameters with diseases risk. This study aims to determine the association of fat mass by skinfold thickness measurement with BMI. The study design was observational with cross-sectional approach. This research was done at the UniversitasPadjadjaran in 2015. The number of subjects were 96 men with the inclusion criteria over 50 years, exclusion criteria have abnormal posture and edema. Statistical analysis used Spearman rank correlation test and a simple linear regression. Characteristics of age 67.98 (SD: 9.81) years, height 1.61 (SD: 0.61) m, weight 66.67 (SD: 10.74) kg, BMI: 26.28 (SD 3,55) kg / m2, body fat: 30.98 percent. The distribution of nutritional status category: underweight 2 percent, normoweight 11.9 percent, overweight 27.27 percent, obese 58.4 percent. Fat mass category: normal category 41.6 percent and overfat 58.4 percent. Correlation between fat mass with age of 0.094 percent, with heights 0.14 percent and with a BMI 0.55 percent. Simple linier regression analysis shows the equation: percent fat mass = 2,757 + 0.089. This equation means every increase of 1 BMI will increase the fat mass percent by (2.757 + 1*0.089)2. The implications of this equation show that BMI can predict fat mass in elderly men based on subcutaneous fat thicknessmeasurements. Karakteristik usia 67,98(SD: 9,81) tahun, tinggi badan 1,61(SD : 0,61) m, berat badan 66,67 (SD : 10,74) kg, IMT: 26,28 (SD : 3,55) kg/m2, lemak tubuh: 30,98 persen.

Abstract

Background : Fibroblast growth factor 21 (FGF21) is a muscle-derived myokine whose expression changes in response to elevated reactive oxygen species (ROS), primarily generated by cytochrome c oxidase complex IV (COX IV) in skeletal muscle. Moringa oleifera (MO) is known for its antioxidant potential, which may influence FGF21 expression and oxidative stress pathways. This study aimed to evaluate the effects of MO leaf extract on FGF21 mRNA expression and mitochondrial oxidative capacity in skeletal muscle under sedentary conditions. Methods:  This semiquantitative analytic study used 10 sedentary male Wistar rats, divided into control and treatment groups. The treatment group was administered 200 mg/kg of MO leaf extract, while the control group was given a standard diet and water for 12 weeks. COX IV and FGF21 mRNA levels in the soleus muscle were measured using real-time polymerase chain reaction. Statistical analysis included the Shapiro–Wilk normality test, Levene’s homogeneity test, independent t-test, or Mann–Whitney test, with significance set at p<0.05.Results: The treatment group exhibited lower COX IV (0.6414 vs 0.7388) and higher FGF21 (0.9414 vs 0.7157) mRNA levels compared to the control group; however, the differences were not significant (p=0.354 and p=0.170, respectively). Conclusions: Although FGF21 may act as a therapeutic response to decreased mitochondrial activity, MO supplementation in sedentary conditions shows no significant effect on mitochondrial oxidative function or FGF21 expression. Nonetheless, these findings contribute to understanding metabolic regulation and highlight the potential role of antioxidants and active lifestyle interventions in promoting wellness and preventing muscle decline due to aging.
