Abstract

Abstract

The yoghurt consisted of low-fat milk, three bacterial strains starter, which included: L. bulgaricus ATCC 11842, L. plantarum ATCC 8014, and B. longum (1:1:1); purple sweet potato puree (Ipomoea batatas, L.) and carboxymethylcellulose sodium with the concentration of 0.6%, 1.2%, and 1.8%. Purple sweet potato fortification in yogurt can prevent hypercholesterolemic conditions because it inhibits lipid and sugar absorption in the intestine. Unfortunately, there is one shortcoming in the production of yogurt which affects the final product quality. This shortcoming is in the decrease in the air holding capacity (whey off) during the production due to the pH level within the isoelectric point of casein. This causes precipitation and phase separation. This study will add a stabilizer to the formula to overcome it. The stabilizer used is carboxymethylcellulose sodium, which is semi-synthetic water-soluble ester polymer cellulose. This study aimed to determine the optimal concentration of carboxymethylcellulose sodium and its effect on purple sweet potato yogurt's physicochemical and organoleptic properties. The product quality evaluations were on organoleptic evaluation, density, viscosity, and pH level. Centrifugation and freeze-thaw tests were also performed to evaluate product stability. The results showed that carboxymethylcellulose sodium could maintain the stability of purple sweet potato yogurt by binding the air content, increasing consistency, and smoothing the texture even though it did not affect the freezing point of the product. This study gave the best results for purple sweet potato yogurt with 1.2% carboxymethylcellulose sodium concentration.

Abstract

BACKGROUND: Recently, coffee is widely used for preventing photoaging because of its antioxidant capacity. Among two kinds of coffee, robusta coffee has higher content of antioxidant such as chlorogenic acid (CGA) and caffeine. Researchs about robusta coffee bean effect on photoaging due to UVB radiation is still limited. Therefore, the aim of this study was to examine the effect of robusta extract cream (RE cream) on preventing wrinkle in mice induced by ultraviolet-B (UVB) radiation.METHODS: RE cream was made by mixing RE coffee with moisturizing cream in different concentration (10%, 20%, and 40%). Twenty-five male of Mus musculus Balb/c strain mice aged 4 weeks were divided into five groups; control group, UVB group, UVB + 10% RE group, UVB + 20% RE group, and UVB + 40% RE group. The UVB groups were given UVB radiation three times a week with an exposure duration of 100 seconds per time for ten weeks. At the end of the treatment, skin samples were excised and statined histologically, also were analyzed for their protein expression. Evaluation of wrinkles was carried out using the Bissete method before and after treatment. To evaluate the thickness of the epidermis, HE staining was performed, while masson Trichome staining was performed to determine the collagen content.RESULTS: RE cream-treated groups showed lower wrinkle score compared to the control group. Furthermore, in UVB + 10% RE group, the RE cream application reduce wrinkle formation. In UVB + 10% RE group and UVB + 20% RE group, the RE cream application increased epidermal thickness and collagen content (p=0.00). While collagenase, matrix metalloproteinase-1 (MMP-1) expression was lower in UVB + 20% RE group compared to the UVB group (p<0.05), however the MMP1 expression in UVB + 40% RE group was higher than other treatment group.CONCLUSION: RE cream prevents wrinkle by maintaining epidermal thickness and collagen contain. RE cream also decreases MMP-1 expression in mice.KEYWORDS: coffee, collagen, MMP-1, robusta, wrinkle

Abstract

Over 80% of the adult population will experience an episode of low back pain (LBP). Low back pain is a pain in the lumbosacral region. When it progresses, which may be identified earlier with signs of a red flag, the manifestation might become radiculopathy. Radiculopathies are nerve root disease which may show signs of neurologic symptoms from the sensory, motoric, or autonomic origin. This study to help identify the clinical characteristics of a red flag in low back pain patients, which became lumbar radiculopathy for prognostic and diagnostic use. It is a descriptive quantitative cross-sectional study of medical records from patients hospitalized with complaints of low back pain with lumbar radiculopathy between January 2013–December 2015 in the Department of Neurology, Dr. Hasan Sadikin General Hospital, Bandung. It identifies a specific red flag and neurogenic symptoms. Patients most affected were housewives (26%), females (60%), and middle-aged adults (31%). The highest recorded symptom being sensory (76%), the highest progression was sensory to motoric (59%), affected by all three neurologic symptoms (39%), and trauma was the highest red flag recorded (48%). Low back pain patients who have signs of red flag show a high tendency to develop radiculopathy, which shows neurologic symptoms. If left untreated earlier, it may become a permanent disability. RADIKULOPATI LUMBAR: STUDI DESKRIPTIF GEJALA KLINIS RED FLAG DAN GEJALA NEUROLOGIS DI RSUP DR. Abstract

EFFORTS TO IMPROVE EARLY DETECTION OF BREAST CANCER IN CIJULANG 1 VOCATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL, PANGANDARAN REGENCY. The high mortality rate of breast cancer (BC) patients in Indonesia is associated with conditions of most patients come to doctor in an advanced stage of BC. This is due to the low BC awareness of Indonesian women. This community service program (PPM) is intended to increase knowledge of adolescent women about early detection of BC. This action was conducted by BC awareness workshop to 114 female students of Vocational High School (SMK) 1 Cijulang, Pangandaran district, West Java. The profile of participants showed that 64% of participants are 17 years old and mostly from Cijulang and Cimerak sub-districts. In addition, the majority of participants were not aware of BC, indicated by lack of knowledge of BC signs and symptoms (97%), and low confident of doing breast self-examination (BSE) (30%). Moreover, there were 7% of the participants were smoking which is known to be one of the major risk factors for BC. These findings point out conducting a program for increasing BC awareness among students. The program was managed by mini-lecture that focuses on BC risk factors, BC early detection and BSE (SADARI) using videos and simulation on a mannequin. This program was expected to have an impact on their families, indirectly. Ultimately, this will increase the finding of new cases of BC which will increase their life expectancy.

Abstract

BACKGROUND: Purple  sweet  potato  yogurt (PSPY) is a funtional food which is rich in anthocyanin and probiotics. However, the currently available data on its potentially protective effect on anthropometry, lipid metabolism, oxidative stress, and pro-inflammatory markers is very minimal, especially in mice. This study was performed to investigate those effects on balb/c mice models (Mus musculus) given a high-fat diet (HFD).METHOD: Balb/c mice were treated with or without standard diet, HFD, ethanol extract, yogurt, and PSPY according to the group. The changes of anthropometry were analyzed using Lee Index. After three months, the interscapular brown adipose tissue (iBAT) was morphologically observed with hematoxylin and eosin (H&E) staining. The blood serum was used for evaluation using cholesterol oxidase-peroxidase aminoantypirin (CHOD-PAP) for lipid profile, enzyme-linked immunoassay (ELISA) for tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α and interleukin (IL)-6, and thiobarbituric acid reactive substance (TBARS) procedure for malondialdehyde (MDA).RESULT: Lee Index revealed a decrease in time (p<0.0001). The PSPY group showed a decrease in iBAT weight (p<0.05), lipid profiles including LDL (p<0.05) and total cholesterol (p>0.05), TNF-α and IL-6 (p>0.05), and MDA (p>0.05). Adipocytes’ density showed a significant increase (p=0.001). CONCLUSION: This research finding indicates that PSPY affects lipid metabolism and has a potential protective effect of reducing systemic inflammation and oxidative stress.KEYWORDS: anthocyanin, high-fat diet, lee index, lipid metabolism, oxidative stress, purple sweet potato yogurt, systemic inflammation

Abstract

Selenium (Se) deficiency is associated with certain abnormalities, such as Keshan disease, cancer, cardiovascular disease (CVD), viral infections, infertility, immune system abnormalities, metabolic diseases, neurological disorders, and growth retardation. Its antioxidant properties are integrated into various selenoenzymes, mainly glutathione peroxidase (GPx) and thioredoxin reductase (Trx). These selenoenzymes act as a protective mechanism to prevent oxidative stress-induced cellular injury, regulate DNA transcription, and cell proliferation. Decreased levels of antioxidants induce reactive oxygen species (ROS) accumulation resulting in loss of mitochondrial structure and function. The antioxidant properties of selenium could depress ROS and modulates autophagy by interfering initiation of autophagy and phagophore formation. Inhibition at the initiation stage not only involves mTOR and AMPK, an autophagy-related regulators, but also autophagy markers, including Beclin 1, Atg5, LC3, and p62; thus, phagophore and autophagosome are not formed. This review will discuss the role of selenium in modulating autophagy in various organs.
