Abstract

Abstract

In communicating ideas in a complex discourse, non-literal expressions are often used to convey a message. This qualitative descriptive study used conceptual metaphor theory and metaphorical pattern analysis to analyze and investigate linguistic discourses and find the conceptual metaphor in the two most prominent Japanese media, Yomiuri Shinbun and Asahi Shinbun. Then, analyze how metaphorical expression emerges and what conceptual domain of the source domain is underlying the expression of the source target. This research shows that WAR is the most frequent conceptual metaphor in COVID-19 discourse and the HUMAN and NATURE conceptual domain. While the WAR conceptual domain helps to convey the urgency of how to treat the virus and illness, the HUMAN and NATURE conceptual domain helps to convey the situation and condition of the pandemic. This study found that both newspapers' data emphasize the community, citizens, and national interests, indicating that to understand how Japanese people communicate is to understand that Japanese people are a collective society, and that society and cultural background are embodied in the conceptual domain of human thinking and then appear as a linguistic expression.

Abstract

Abstract

This study examined the relationship between core Japanese language competencies Kanji, Bunpou (grammar), Dokkai (reading comprehension), and Choukai (listening comprehension) and success on the Japanese Language Proficiency Test (JLPT). This quantitative, predictive correlational research involved 60 students enrolled in Universitas Negeri Semarang Japanese language program. Based on the structural equation modelling and binary logistic regression analysis, the combined effects of Kanji, Bunpou (grammar), Dokkai (reading), and Choukai (listening) on JLPT outcomes were highly significant (χ² (4) = 42.957, p < 0.001), accounting for 73.4% of the variance (Nagelkerke R2.734). The model correctly classified 95% of cases, has an 88% accuracy for failures, and has a 98% accuracy for passes, indicating its robust predictive power. All four competencies were also significantly related to JLPT performance when considered separately (all p < 0.001). However, only Kanji (p = 0.041, odds ratio ≈ 1.69) and Bunpou (p = 0.046, odds ratio ≈ 1.77) were significantly associated with JLPT performance in the simultaneous model, as the impacts of Dokkai and Choukai were not significant. These findings imply that grammar, vocabulary and Kanji are fundamental elements for Japanese language learning, with reading and listening comprehension being heavily reliant on these skills. Therefore, because mastery of both lexical and syntactic skills appears to be a prerequisite for other abilities to meaningfully influence JLPT performance, this study recommends refining the integrative linguistic threshold concept and adopting a more comprehensive ‘Foundational-First’ pedagogical framework. It further suggests structuring weekly learning cycles to prioritize intensive lexico-syntactic automatization as the essential gateway to developing higher-order reading and listening proficiency.

Abstract

This study aims to evaluate the perceived effectiveness and implementation dynamics of Lesson Study in the Cross-Cultural Understanding course (Ibunka Rikai) conducted through the Merdeka Belajar Kampus Merdeka (MBKM) program. This descriptive qualitative research involved students and lecturers from Semarang State University and Ganesha University of Education. Data were collected through observations, in-depth interviews, and documentation, and analyzed using thematic analysis. The results highlight three main themes: (1) Improved quality of instructional design collaboration, (2) Dynamics of cross-cultural interaction in virtual spaces, and (3) Technical challenges and pedagogical adaptation. Findings indicate that while conventional methods often limit active interaction, the Lesson Study approach successfully facilitated deeper student engagement and understanding of Japanese cultural nuances. This study recommends integrating more stable infrastructure to support the sustainability of online Lesson Study.
