Abstract

Electroplating wastewater contains heavy metals (copper, chromium, zinc, and nickel) at concentrations that frequently exceed safe discharge limits, posing serious risks to aquatic ecosystems. This study examines whether the Merrill–Crowe process, conventionally used for gold and silver recovery, can be adapted to recover copper from industrial electroplating effluent. The wastewater tested carried an initial copper concentration of 235.7 ppm. Cyanidation conditions were optimized by varying pH (7-11) and contact time (5-25 hours) to generate copper–cyanide complexes, which were subsequently precipitated with zinc powder. Complex formation was monitored by UV-Vis spectrophotometry; copper concentrations were quantified by atomic absorption spectrophotometry. Optimal conditions were pH 8 and 20 hours of contact time. Under these parameters, copper recovery reached 58.5% from electroplating wastewater and 43.5% from a standard reference solution. The higher efficiency in the wastewater sample reflects the presence of pre-formed copper–cyanide complexes, which accelerated both cyanidation and cementation. These results suggest the Merrill–Crowe process is a viable, low-complexity recovery strategy, one that not only reduces copper discharge but returns it in elemental form with potential economic value.

Abstract

Abstract

The use of natural ingredients as medicine has been practiced since ancient times as a means of maintaining health, preventing disease, and treating illness. Natural materials such as cinnamon contain secondary metabolites such as flavonoids and polyphenols, which are believed to have anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, antioxidant, and anticancer properties. The purpose of this community service activity is to teach the community how to make cinnamon-based candy and tea that can be consumed by children and adolescents. The method used is material counseling followed by activity evaluation. The results of the evaluation of this community service activity showed that 92% of participants were satisfied with the material provided by the implementation team. This also shows that the educational material provided can give new information and benefits to the community. It is hoped that this activity can be applied by the community and that community service activities can be carried out regularly in the area to increase the local community's knowledge about the use of natural ingredients.

Abstract

Abstract. Ulum FB, Setyati D, Oktavianawati I, Rizqoni MIA, Sari EN, Muzakhar K, Su’udi M. 2026. Bioactivities and phytochemical profile of Cyclosorus parasiticus from East Java, Indonesia via GC-MS and LC-MS. Biodiversitas 27 (2): d270234. https://doi.org/10.13057/biodiv/d270234. Cyclosorus parasiticus is a terrestrial fern abundantly distributed in the area of Gumitir Mountain, East Java, Indonesia. Despite its ecological abundance, its pharmacological potential remains undercharacterised, although leaf tissues from Gumitir populations accumulate relatively high levels of flavonoids and alkaloids. Through an integrative bioassay–metabolomics approach, this study presents the first systematic evaluation of the antibacterial and antioxidant activities, together with comprehensive chemical profiling, of C. parasiticus from the Gumitir region. Metabolite annotation revealed pronounced chemical diversity, with 39 compounds identified by GC-MS and six dominant LC-MS features. Importantly, the diterpene euphornin and the alkaloids canthiumine and haplophytine were detected and are reported here for the first time in a fern, substantially expanding current knowledge of pteridophyte secondary metabolism and highlighting previously overlooked alkaloid diversity in fern taxa. The methanolic extract exhibited concentration-dependent antibacterial inhibition against Staphylococcus aureus, Kocuria rosea, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and Escherichia coli, with greater susceptibility observed in Gram-positive bacteria. Antioxidant activity measured by the DPPH radical-scavenging assay yielded an IC50 value of 176.66±14.64 ppm, indicating moderate radical-scavenging capacity. Collectively, these findings establish C. parasiticus (Gumitir population) as a chemically rich fern with measurable antibacterial and antioxidant potential, supporting its promise as a natural source of pharmacologically relevant metabolites.

Abstract

The development of environmentally friendly bioadditives has attracted growing attention for improving diesel fuel quality. This study comparatively investigated the role of oxygenated compounds in essential oils from Cymbopogon nardus and Cymbopogon citratus as natural bioadditives. The essential oils were obtained by hydrodistillation and characterized for yield, moisture content, density, kinematic viscosity, and volatile compound composition using gas chromatography–mass spectrometry. The essential oils were then blended with diesel fuel at five additive concentrations (0.2, 0.4, 0.6, 0.8, and 1.0% (v/v)), with neat diesel (0% (v/v)) serving as the control. The resulting blends were evaluated for density, kinematic viscosity, distillation characteristics, and ignition quality, as indicated by the Calculated Cetane Index (CCI). The results revealed that C. citratus essential oil contained a higher proportion of oxygenated compounds than C. nardus. The optimal bioadditive concentration was determined to be 0.8% (v/v) for C. nardus and 0.6% (v/v) for C. citratus, based on a balance between statistically significant CCI improvement and maintaining density and kinematic viscosity within diesel fuel specifications. At these optimal concentrations, the CCI increased from 45.5 for neat diesel to 46.3 for C. nardus and to 46.9 for C. citratus, respectively, while density and kinematic viscosity remained within diesel fuel specifications. These findings suggest that variations in essential oil composition may contribute to the observed differences in fuel properties and support the potential use of essential oils rich in oxygenated compounds as sustainable bioadditives for diesel fuel applications.
