Abstract

Objectives: Tooth loss is a common oral health issue in the general population, with its prevalence increasing significantly with age. Tooth loss that is not immediately rehabilitated with dentures can lead to disruption of the occlusion pattern. This condition may be affected by the position of the condyle, but it can also lead to morphological alterations of the mandibular condyle. If this condition is left untreated for an extended period, these changes can significantly impact the temporomandibular joint (TMJ). Materials and Methods: The sample used in this study was secondary data from panoramic radiographs of bilateral partially edentulous patients who had high-quality radiograph standards. Results: The findings of this study demonstrate the alteration in mandibular condyle position, with 57.7% of cases showing anterior position and 13.7% showing retroposition in patients with bilateral partial edentulism. The most dominant condyle morphology distribution was found to be the pointed shape (36.3%), whereas the least was the flat shape (5.7%). Conclusion: In this study, the results showed that the anterior position and pointed shape were the most common position and morphology of the condyle. The distribution of this position was found to be higher in women than in men, with hormonal, anatomical, and habitual factors influencing the distribution of pressure on the TMJ.

Abstract

Background: Silicone base dental holders have been introduced in periapical radiography to improve ergonomic and patient comfort. However, repeated intraoral use raises safety concerns related to microbial contamination due to direct contact with saliva and the potential for biofilm formation. This study aimed to evaluate the sterility of silicone based dental holders following clinical use, routine antiseptic washing, and seven days of storage. Methods: This experimental laboratory study employed a post-test with control group design. Thirty silicone dental holder samples were divided into an intervention group (used clinically; n = 15), and control group (unused; n= 15). After clinical use, intervention samples was washed using antiseptic soap according to standard hospital procedures and stored in sterile containers at room temperature for seven days. Sterility testing was performed using Heart Infusion Broth (HIB) culture medium incubated at 37°C for five days. Bacterial growth was assessed based on medium turbidity. Results: All samples (100%) in both groups showed turbidity in the HIB medium, indicating bacterial contamination despite prior antiseptic washing. The findings demonstrate that manual cleansing with antiseptic soap alone is insufficient to eliminate microbial colonization on silicone dental holders. Conclusions: Routine antiseptic washing and short term storage were insufficient to ensure the sterility of silicone dental holders. These finding highlight the need for more effective sterilization protocols to support safe reuse in periapical radiographic practice.

Abstract

Abstract

Introduction: CBCT-3D (Cone Beam Computed Tomography) is an advanced radiographic imaging technology that is currently being developed and utilized in dentistry, with the advantages of accurately depicting three-dimensional (3D) tissue structures, minimal distortion, and low radiation dose. RSKGMP Universitas Airlangga is an educational dental hospital and one of the few hospitals in Surabaya city and also East Java Province that provides CBCT-3D examination services for various cases- thus becoming a referral center for the radiographic examination in the region. A lot of clinical case referrals have been recorded, but no one has researched the distribution of clinical cases referred for CBCT-3D examination. Objective: This study is aimed to determine the distribution of clinical cases referred for CBCT-3D radiographic examination at RSKGMP Universitas Airlangga based on origin, age, and gender. Methods: This study is a descriptive study with a sample of all clinical case medical records, CBCT-3D examination reference data at RSKGMP Universitas Airlangga from July 2015 to March 2020, which met the sample criteria. Furthermore, the data is tabulated and displayed using pie charts and bar charts. Results: Most referrals for CBCT-3D radiography came from internal referrals of RSKGMP Universitas Airlangga (78%). The elderly patients (46 years and over) had the most referrals (59%) of all age groups with the most indication for implant cases (78.9%). Female patients slightly more dominated the total referrals (57.5%) than male patients (42.5%). Conclusion: Most of the clinical cases of referral for CBCT-3D radiographic examination were implants and came from internal RSKGMP Universitas Airlangga, with the most referral age category being elderly and dominated by female patients.

Abstract

Objectives: This review aimed to evaluate the performance of convolutional neural networks (CNN) in the automated identification of periodontal bone loss (PBL) on panoramic radiographs. Review: This task-based narrative review was developed from a structured literature search of PubMed, Scopus, ScienceDirect, and reference lists for full-text studies published in 2013-2023 that applied CNN-based methods to PBL on panoramic radiographs. Of 336 records, 34 duplicates were removed, 302 records were screened, 14 full texts were assessed, and 11 core studies were included. Ten studies incorporated classification, nine detection, and five segmentation. Reported performance was generally promising, but direct comparison was limited by heterogeneous datasets, disease definitions, architectures, data splits, and outcome metrics. Classification accuracy in studies reporting this metric was approximately 76-95%; segmentation studies reported high Dice and intersection-over-union values in selected tasks. Newer studies published after the original search show continued movement toward multicenter datasets, periodontitis staging, defect-pattern analysis, and longitudinal assessment. Conclusion: CNN shows strong potential for the accurate and rapid automated identification of PBL on panoramic radiographs through classification, detection, and segmentation approaches, and may assist dentists in diagnosing periodontal disease; however, small dataset size, limited image quality, and the absence of accompanying clinical data remain limitations that should be addressed in future research.
