Abstract

Abstract

One of the key elements of the Merdeka Curriculum is the implementation of essential materials, which are deemed crucial and must be delivered to students. However, limited research has focused on essential materials within social studies subjects. Therefore, it is necessary to conduct an in-depth analysis of how teachers apply essential materials in social studies. Based on this need, the objective of this study is to analyze the selection of essential materials by social studies teachers using a differentiated approach, as proposed by Carol Tomlinson. This research employs a Systematic Literature Review (SLR) method, gathering secondary data sources relevant to the research topic. The data consists of journal articles from 2019 to 2024, retrieved using Harzing's Publish or Perish software. The subjects of this study are high school social studies teachers, with a focus on their practices in teaching essential materials. The findings reveal that teachers have selected essential materials that are both relevant and engaging for students. This is evidenced by the use of learning media that resonates with students' daily lives, as well as digital-based teaching methods such as problem-based learning (PBL), gamification, and field studies. As a result, students are able to easily grasp the material, enhancing their motivation, conceptual understanding, and engagement in the learning process.

Abstract

This research is intended to describe the cultural semantics of the Javanese language's local wisdom and to internalize it to prevent moral degradation among students. This research uses the qualitative method with an ethnographic method approach. Data include phrases, sentences, and paragraphs containing information on the meaning, value, and function of local wisdom. Techniques of collecting data used were observation, recording, and in-depth interviews with 7 traditional figures of Javanese native speakers aged 45-60 years, 3 teachers of art and culture subject in Senior High School (SMA), and 5 Senior High School students domiciled in Surakarta. Semantic analysis was used to analyze the data. Data were transcribed, identified, and categorized using semantic relation analysis to be elaborated, then, based on its meaning, value, and context. The result shows that cultural semantics of the Javanese language local wisdom containing behavioral character value is classified into: (1) tepa selira (tolerance), (2) grapyak semanak (hospitality), (3) ewuh pakewuh (mutual respect), (4) pangerten (mutual understanding), (5) wawas dhiri (self-introspection), (6) andhap ashor (virtue), (7) lembah manah (humility) and (8) guyup rukun (concord). Semantics and its context are codes of conduct constituting ancestral heritage that can prevent moral degradation, control behavior, and shape character, particularly among students. This research offers two forms of implementation in education: (1) actualization in a school environment with extracurricular, co-curricular, and intracurricular activities, and (2) integration it into the learning.

Abstract

The generation of students born in the digital era (digital natives) possesses distinct characteristics that educators must consider. However, many teachers have yet to implement essential materials in their teaching practices that align with these characteristics. Therefore, teacher innovation is required to adapt and elaborate on essential materials to meet the needs of digital natives. This study aims to explore the implementation of essential sociology learning materials by teachers tailored to the characteristics of digital natives. The research employs a qualitative phenomenological approach. Data collection techniques include observation, interviews, and documentation. The study involves 14 teachers who have implemented the independent curriculum and integrated technology into the learning process, as well as 18 students actively engaged in technology-based learning from 9 high schools in the Surakarta residency. The findings reveal six characteristics of digital natives: digital proficiency, technological flexibility, experiential learning, visual orientation, social interaction, and multitasking. Teachers have made efforts to deliver essential sociology materials while considering these characteristics. However, several challenges remain, such as limited teacher proficiency in technology, lack of innovation in designing teaching media, and inadequate school facilities and infrastructure. This study contributes to helping educators adapt sociology teaching methods to the characteristics of digital natives. The findings indicate that while teachers have aligned sociology learning with the traits of digital natives, they face challenges related to infrastructure and innovation.

Abstract

Purpose of Study: This study aims to identify social practices of literacy and numeracy using the CRT approach in Sociology learning. Methodology: This research uses a descriptive qualitative approach with a phenomenology type. The data source consists of focus group discussion (FGD) results, observation, and document analysis. FGD involves sociology teachers in Soloraya, with the purposive sampling technique used to select informants. Observation was carried out directly by observing the sociology learning process in the class. Document analysis includes teaching modules, sociology learning gain, student worksheets, and other learning sets. Data validity was tested using source and method triangulation. Data analysis was done using Interpretative Phenomenology Analysis, encompassing four stages: bracketing, intuiting, analyzing, and describing. Main Findings: The result of the research shows that teachers get a support system from government regulation, the Merdeka Mengajar platform, the learning community, the supervisor, and the subject teacher working group. Each of the parties plays a role that supports CRT-based literacy and numeracy learning. The learning activity can be identified in three things. Firstly, teachers hold the authority to accustom the students to using numeric data in the context of local culture. Secondly, teachers integrate numeric data from local cultures to make learning more relevant and contextual. Thirdly, teachers create an inclusive learning environment by accommodating numeric data in the context of local culture. Novelty/Originality of Study: By applying CRT, sociology teachers teach literacy and numeracy skills and help students see the relevance of these skills in understanding and participating in social change.
