Abstract

This research is an analysis on the violation of cooperative principles in the movie  Avengers that also describes the type of violation of cooperative principle contained in every conversation in the movie.  The research is conducted by using descriptive qualitative method. The subject of this research is the conversation that occurs in the movie Avengers, whilst the object of this research is the data containing forms of every conversation violations of the cooperative principle in the movie Avengers. The technique used in collecting data is called note technique. The data obtained is classified based on the form of violation of cooperative principles. The result of the research shows that the form of violation of the cooperative principle that occurs in the Avengers movie consists of four maxims: the maxim of quantity, the maxim of quality, the maxim of relevance, and the maxim of manner. The violation on the maxim of cooperation occurs because of the same knowledge held by the speech participants and the speech partners in discussing a problem, clarifying information, and changing the subject.Keywords: Violations of cooperative principles, maxim, movie, avengers.

Abstract

This article is interested in studying the utterances used by a teacher in a virtual  classroom. The study is conducted in Kindergarten 2 class, James Education Centre located in Bogor. The method applied is descriptive qualitative, using recordings and note taking as a technique to attain data.  Looking into the illocutionary act, which is the meaning of utterances proposed by Searle, the data reveals that  69% of the teacher utterances are directives, 18% assertives and 12% expressives. The meaning of directive speech act is commiting interlocuters to do something. Assertives are used as  statements and reports, while expressives as compliments and expressing gratitude. Keywords: utterance; speech act; illocutionaryact; directives.

Abstract

The objectives of this research are to identify the types and strategies in translating idioms used in Paula Hawkins' novel The Girl on the Train. The research methodology applied isdescriptive qualitative.The results show that the types of idioms (O’Dell and McCarthy 2010)found in the novel are similes, binomials, proverbs, euphemisms, cliché, and fixed statement and other language. Using the theory by Baker (2011), the idioms in the novel are mainly translated using the strategy; translation by phrase. Other strategies that are also applied are using idioms of similar meanings but dissimilar forms, using idioms of singular and form, translating by omission of entire idioms, and borrowing the source language. Keywords: Idioms; Translation Strategy.

Abstract

This study aims to identify the jargon and specific meaning used by the professionals and community of MotoGP such as commentators and hosts (during MotoGP race), interviewers (during interviews) and racers (during interviews) taken from YouTube in the period of March-November 2019. This research is descriptive-qualitative in nature. The results of the study reveal, out of 64, 33 words are categorized as jargons and 31 words have specific meaning. The jargon and words which specific meaning found in the sport of MotoGP racing all refer to the racing technique, the situation and conditions of the riders, the communication between the teams and groups of the event, as well as the conditions of the race track in competitions. Keywords : Jargon; specific meaning; MotoGP

Abstract

Abstract   This study discusses the components of events and the use of language variations of the central figure in The Greatest Showman movie (2017). The purpose of this research is to explain how to use speech and the use of language variations of central figures. This study discusses the emergence of speech events and variations in usage on central character. The method used is descriptive qualitative research method with proficient free listening techniques. The results of data analysis show that the speech component always appears for each variety language and there are four languages variations from five different languages. The variety of languages that are often used by central figures is a consultative style, and the variety that is very little used is the formal style and casual style. For the results, it can be concluded that there are 41 variations in the variety of languages found in Michael Gracey's The Greatest Showman movie ; (7) Official variations or variations (Formal); (17) Variations or types of business (Consultative); (7 ) Casual variation or variety, and (8) Intimate variation or variety (Intimate). Of the 41 data found in the film there are 7 formal types with a percentage of 17%, 17 different types of businesses with a percentage of 42%, 7 types of casualties with a percentage of 17% and 10 intimate varieties with a percentage of 20%.Keywords : Sosiolinguistic, components of speech events, language variations, central figure.

Abstract

This research is aimed to describe the process of derivational and inflectional affixes in the song lyrics on the Playlist Today’s Top Hits Spotify and to analyze the most dominant and productive types of derivational and inflectional affixes on the playlist. The result of this study shows 268 words consist of derivational and inflectional affixes. Derivational affixes contain 59 words, with the process: Verb to Noun, Adjective to Noun, Adjective to Adverb, Verb to Adjective, Noun to Adjective, Noun to Verb, Verb to Verb, Adjective to Adjective, and Noun to Noun. Inflectional affixes consist of 209 words, with the process: -s or –es plural, -ing (progressive), -s third singular person, -ed past tense, -er (comparative), -est (superlative), -en (past participle), and ‘s (possessive). The most dominant and productive types of derivational and inflectional affixes are derivational suffixes and inflectional suffixes. Comparing the affixation process derivationally and inflectionally, the inflectional affix process is the most productive in the process of affixation.Keywords: Derivational; inflectional; affix; song lyrics.

Abstract

ABSTRACTThis research discusses the relationship between the symbol and meaning in Zootopia, a film by Jared Bush and Phil Johnston. The objectives of this research is to show the types of symbol in Zootopia and its meaning by identifying the types of symbol and its meaning based on the speaker’s utterance and the context of the utterance itself. The method used in this research is descriptive analysis with library research technique. The results of this research shows that there are 15 symbols in this movie. From 15 symbols mentioned, all the symbols in Zootopia are private symbol. The meaning of symbol are determined by its reference, which refers to the words and sentences, and also by supportive context which explains the reference. Symbols and meanings in this movie are closely related and become a unity that builds storylines and characters. The symbols in this movie are intentionally used to help in conveying the content and message of the movie. Keywords: Symbol, meaning, movie.

Abstract

This article is interested in analysing the referring expressions of 18 of Indonesia top tourist destinations 2018 and how they portray Indonesia tourism. The primary and secondary data are taken from the official website of Ministry of Tourism. Data are collected using simak method with note taking technique. Data are analysed using identity method. Referring expression theories are adapted from Yule (1996), Kreidler (1998) and Huford and Heasly (2007). The articles in the official website promoting 18 of Indonesia top tourist destination 2018 reveal there are 79 referring expressions. Through the referring expressions, Indonesia is portrayed as having world class tourism and rich in historical background. Referring expressions also explains tourist destinations which are shown as modern and being the center of trade. It informs tourist destinations which are developing and having unique qualities. Superlatives which are found in many referring expressions imply that Indonesia is the best in terms of its tourism.Keywords: referent; referring expression; tourist destination.

Abstract

This research discusses the myths in the Bogor Sport and Tourism Regency Logo. This research uses qualitative research methods . The object of this research is the logo of Bogor Sport and Tourism Regency which was inaugurated in 2019. This logo displays the shape of mountains, kujang, taro, paragliding sports. This research uses documenter data collection techniques, visual material data collection techniques and online data techniques. The study used semiotics data analysis methods or techniques with an approach from Barthes that analyzed the meanings of denotation, connotations and myths. The technique of examining the validity of research results uses a cycle of data similarity, research persistence. And triangulation theory, the theory used is the theory of Symbolic Interactionism of Mead and Blumer. The results of the research obtained from this study related to the myth in the logo of Bogor Sport and Tourism Regency is that the Bogor Regency government wants to convey the message that currently the Bogor Regency government is having a strong goal and spirit to advance Bogor Regency towards The City of Sport and Tourism.  Bogor Regency Government relies on the potential of its territory to be part of tourism and sports activities. Beautiful landscapes, sports facilities, community culture and unique processed food become important points that are "sold" in the progress of Bogor Regency in the Sport & Tourism sector.

Abstract

This study is conducted to analyze lexical ambiguity in memes on Instagram. The method used in this study is qualitative-descriptive. 21 memes that were collected from August 2020 – August 2021 utilize ambiguous words. The results of the analysis show that lexical ambiguity can be applied as an element to add humor to memes. By taking advantage of incongruity theory, words that have multiple meanings are employed to create misunderstandings or mistakes that make the memes humorous.Keywords: lexical ambiguity; memes; humor.
