Abstract

Students are one group of individuals who are in adolescent development. Adolescence is the stage of human development between childhood and adulthood. Growth and development are also felt in adolescence, including cognitive, personality, social, and physical development. Adolescence is the next generation of the nation's struggle and has a vital role in the nation's survival. Thus, various skills are needed in adolescents to face the development and challenges that lie ahead. One of the things that can be done is to provide debriefing related to essential life skills. Debriefing is done through training activities to increase students' knowledge of essential life skills. The participants of this activity were 27 students of SMAN 2 Padang Panjang. Training activities are packaged through applicative, interactive, and simple games that illustrate essential life skills—measurement of knowledge in students using an open-ended questionnaire that refers to essential life skills. After receiving training, we observed an increase in grades/scores in students, which was measured through a pre- and post-training assessment of their understanding and application of the essential life skills.

Abstract

Generation Z, as the productive age group, has a significant role in the political development of a country. Although this age group is often seen as abstaining or disconnected from politics, their political awareness is essential as the nation's successors. Therefore, the present study investigated the relationship between political awareness, national identity, and knowledge about the general election among Generation Z in Indonesia. A total of 626 participants aged 17 and 21 years were recruited from 25 provinces in Indonesia using a voluntary sampling technique. Data were collected using the Political Awareness Scale and National Identity Scale, distributed through online questionnaires. The correlation analysis showed that national identity and knowledge about elections had a significant and positive relationship with political awareness with moderate strength. Moreover, the study found that most Generation Z had a high political awareness, national identity, and knowledge of the 2024 general elections. A significant difference was also reported in political awareness and national identity between Generation Z, who participated in social organizations and engaged as political party sympathizers, and those who did not. Therefore, promoting a sense of belonging to the country could foster political awareness in Generation Z, which will boost their active political participation.

Abstract

Industri perhotelan merupakan sektor hospitality dengan tingkat turnover yang tinggi. Salah satu bentuk turnover yang sering ditemukan pada industri ini adalah job-hopping, yang kerap diasosiasikan dengan persepsi negatif karyawan terhadap pekerjaan di industri hospitality. Persepsi negatif akan mengarah pada rendahnya organization-based self-esteem yang dimiliki karyawan, sehingga dapat meningkatkan kecenderungan karyawan untuk berpindah-pindah kerja. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk melihat hubungan antara organization-based self-esteem dengan job-hopping motives pada karyawan hotel di Kota Padang. Metode penelitian yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini adalah metode kuantitatif dengan desain korelasional yang menggunakan analisis Spearman Rank. Responden dalam penelitian ini berjumlah 95 karyawan hotel bintang tiga dan bintang empat di Kota Padang, dengan teknik pengambilan sampel yaitu voluntary sampling. Pengumpulan data dilakukan dengan menggunakan adaptasi alat ukur Organization-Based Self-Esteem (OBSE) Scale dari Pierce dkk. (1989) dan alat ukur Job-Hopping Motives Scale (JHMS) dari Lake dkk. (2017). Hasil penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa terdapat hubungan negatif yang signifikan antara OBSE dengan escape motive (p = 0,004), dengan nilai koefisien korelasi (r) sebesar -0,293. Sementara itu, tidak terdapat hubungan yang signifikan antara OBSE dengan advancement motive. Dapat disimpulkan bahwa semakin tinggi organization-based self-esteem, maka semakin rendah intensi job-hopping yang didasari oleh escape motive pada karyawan hotel di Kota Padang.

Abstract

In addition to academic achievement, social-emotional competence has been increasingly considered a fundamental predictor of success in various aspects of life, particularly in adolescents. However, social-emotional competence among adolescents is currently in declining trend. The current research aimed to investigate psychological factors influencing early adolescents' social-emotional competence. This research employed quantitative methods. After filling in informed consent, 380 junior high school students aged 12 and 14 years in Padang city, Indonesia was recruited through the cluster sampling technique. All participants completed three validated questionnaires, such as the Social and Emotional Competency Questionnaire, Prosocial Tendencies Measure, and Peer Acceptance Scale. Structural equation modelling (SEM) analysis showed that prosocial behaviour and peer acceptance had a significant influence on social-emotional competence among early adolescents. Further analysis also revealed that peer acceptance partially mediated the relationships between prosocial behaviour and social-emotional competence. Overall, this research model contributed 39.6% to explain the relationship between the studied variables. Therefore, these findings suggest that encouraging prosocial behaviours and being acknowledged by peers are established as two essential factors in promoting social-emotional competence among early adolescents.

Abstract

Cyberbullying merupakan salah satu perilaku agresif yang dapat terjadi di dunia maya. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menggambarkan tingkat cyberbullying yang dialami oleh remaja (disebut dengan cyberbullying victim), khususnya di media sosial Instagram. Sejumlah 119 subjek berusia 12-21 tahun dan aktif menggunakan media sosial Instagram direkrut dengan menggunakan teknik purposive sampling. Data penelitian dikumpulkan dengan menggunakan Cyber Victim and Bullying Scale (Cetin et al., 2011) setelah melalui proses adaptasi ke bahasa Indonesia. Hasil analisis statistik deskriptif menunjukkan bahwa mayoritas subjek mengalami cyberbullying di media sosial Instagram pada tingkat rendah (86,6%) sedangkan sisanya berada pada tingkat sedang (13,4%). Subjek menyatakan bahwa perilaku cyberbullying yang dialami adalah tuduhan yang tidak benar, penghinaan, dan kiriman pesan mengandung unsur seksual atau ancaman. Berdasarkan hasil tersebut, fenomena cybervictim remaja di media sosial Instagram berada pada kategori rendah. Namun demikian, pengawasan orang tua terhadap remaja dalam penggunaan media sosial masih perlu dilakukan untuk menghindari terjadinya cyberbullying.

Abstract

The Covid-19 pandemic has caused changes in the way individuals engage in the society. This activity change is inseparable from Generation Z’s role as the largest population of productive age in Indonesia. This study aimed to describe civic engagement in Generation Z in Indonesia. A total of 104 research subjects were recruited using a purposive sampling technique in which the criteria was Generation Z aged 15–25 years and able to use the internet. Data were collected by using the Civic Engagement Scale from Doolittle & Faul (2013) (α=.902), adapted to Indonesian, equipped with 11 open-ended questions to explore preferred types of activities, factors influencing the activities, and motivation of civic engagement from the subjects. The results of the data analysis show that 85% of the subjects have a high level of civic engagement which is highly motivated by wanting to help and benefit others. In addition, Generation Z prefers civic engagement activities in person (offline) rather than online. The present study indicates that Generation Z has a high interest and willingness to participate in civic engagement, in which support from the environment plays an important role in this engagement.

Abstract

K-Pop fandom members participate in various pro-social activities, including donations, campaigns, and volunteering. Any form of pro-social behavior performed by the K-Pop fandom is related to its social identity as part of the fandom. This study aimed to analyze the correlation between K-Pop fan social identity and pro-social behavior. The study involved 145 individuals recruited through purposive sampling with the criteria such as aged 18–40 years and members of at least one K-Pop fandom. The data analysis revealed that social identity had a significant positive correlation with pro-social behavior and the direction of the relationship between the two variables was moderately strong. In other words, higher levels of social identity within the K-Pop fandom were associated with increased engagement in pro-social behaviors. Meanwhile, lower levels of social identity corresponded to reduced pro-social behavior. Segala bentuk perilaku prososial yang dilakukan oleh fandom K-Pop berkaitan dengan identitas sosialnya sebagai bagian dari fandom. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menganalisis hubungan antara identitas sosial penggemar K-Pop dan perilaku prososial. Penelitian ini melibatkan 145 orang yang direkrut menggunakan teknik purposive sampling dengan kriteria yaitu berusia 18-40 tahun dan merupakan anggota dari setidaknya satu fandom K-Pop. Hasil analisis menunjukkan bahwa identitas sebagai memiliki hubungan yang positif dan signifikan dengan perilaku prososial dan hubungan kedua variabel relatif kuat. Dengan demikian, tingkat identitas sosial yang lebih tinggi dalam fandom K-Pop berkaitan dengan peningkatan keterlibatan dalam perilaku prososial. Sebaliknya, tingkat identitas sosial yang lebih rendah berhubungan dengan berkurangnya perilaku pro-sosial. Abstract

Catcalling is one form of sexual harassment that is highly pervasive but often disregarded, although the majority of women around the world have experienced catcalling at least once in their lifetime. The present study aimed to investigate the motivations of early adult male to engage in catcalling and the intended reactions of the catcallers. A total of 137 males aged 18–25 who were previously classified as women were recruited as participants by using convenience sampling. The data were collected by using the calling motivations and reactions scale from Walton & Pedersen (2021). The results showed that the most frequent type of catcalling behavior was staring intentionally (81%) and making a specific comment about appearance (65.7%). In addition, the most popular reason for catcalling among early adult men was flirtation or flattery, followed by gratification, cost, or benefit motives. Beside that, most catcallers in this study hoped that the recipients (mostly women) would smile at them and pay attention to them in response to being catcalled. Therefore, this study indicates that most subjects engage in catcalling because they want to flatter or flirt with the recipients and expect positive responses from women after being catcalled. KEY WORDS: catcalling; street harassment; motivation; early adult male ABSTRAK Catcalling adalah salah satu bentuk pelecehan seksual yang sering terjadi tetapi sering diabaikan, meskipun mayoritas wanita di seluruh dunia pernah mengalami catcalling setidaknya sekali seumur hidup. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menyelidiki motivasi pria dewasa awal untuk melakukan catcalling dan bentuk reaksi yang diinginkan oleh orang yang melakukan catcalling (catcallers). Sebanyak 137 laki-laki berusia 18-25 tahun yang pernah melakukan catcalling pada perempuan direkrut sebagai partisipan dengan menggunakan teknik convenience sampling. Data dikumpulkan dengan menggunakan skala motivasi dan reaksi catcalling dari Walton & Pedersen (2021) yang diadaptasi ke dalam bahasa Indonesia. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa jenis perilaku catcalling yang paling sering dilakukan pria dewasa awal adalah menatap dengan sengaja (81%) dan memberikan komentar tertentu tentang penampilan (65.7%). Selain itu, alasan paling populer terjadinya catcalling pada pria dewasa awal adalah motif rayuan/sanjungan, diikuti oleh adanya motif kepuasan dan keuntungan yang diterima catcallers. Selain itu, sebagian besar catcallers dalam penelitian ini berharap bahwa orang yang menerima catcalling (umumnya wanita) akan tersenyum dan memperhatikan mereka setelah menerima catcalling. Dengan demikian, penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa sebagian besar pria dewasa awal melakukan catcalling karena mereka ingin menyanjung atau menggoda wanita, dan mereka juga mengharapkan respon positif dari wanita setelah terlibat dalam aktivitas catcalling. Abstract

University students are required to adjust to a different learning system from schools. The differences would made students experience difficulties, and this situation have been worsen with the COVID-19 pandemic that demanded a shift to full online learning. The purpose of this study was to describe college adjustment among university students, specifically class of 2020 which became the first class to experience full online learning when entering the college. The study used the descriptive quantitative method. A total of 380 Andalas University students in the class of 2020 was recruited through convenience sampling. The research instrument was the Student Adaptation to College Questionnaire (SACQ) developed by Baker & Syrik (1984) modified from Rohmah (2017). The results showed that college adjustment of university students was classified as high (68,42%). It shows that students generally have had effective behaviors in dealing with demands in the academic and social aspects, feel satisfied in college life, and have an attachment to the campus.
