Abstract

Sumedang Regency faces a sociological challenge in the form of a sharp dichotomy between puritanical religious practices and local cultural arts expressions. This phenomenon hinders the optimization of social capital in building community character. This article aims to deconstruct the roots of this dichotomous conflict and reconstruct a new synergy model based on the Grand Theory of the integration of religion, arts, and culture, with the value of "compassion" (Ar-Rahman Ar-Rahim/Silih Asih) as an axiological meeting point. Data were collected through participant observation, in-depth interviews with seven key informants (clerics, artists, academics, bureaucrats), and extensive literature reviews conducted through Community Service (Pengabdian kepada Masyarakat or PkM) activities. The results show that the dichotomy arises from a paradigmatic misunderstanding of religion, which is understood solely as a formalistic ritual. At the same time, arts and culture are considered profane and distant from God. The main findings demonstrate that compassion can serve as an epistemological bridge, with religion providing the ethical foundation, culture providing a communal symbolic container, and art serving as an expressive medium of divine beauty (Jamal). The synergy of these three dimensions creates strong social cohesion and an inclusive character education model in Sumedang.

Abstract

Abstract

Studies on integrative curricula in Integrated Islamic Schools have generally been dominated by research at the primary education level and literature reviews, leaving a gap in empirical analysis based on classical philosophy at the Senior High School (SMA) level. This qualitative research employing a case study method aims to evaluate the relevance of Omar Mohammad Al-Toumy Al-Syaibany’s curriculum thought at SMAIT Fithrah Insani in addressing the dichotomy between religious and general sciences. The results conclude that Al-Syaibany’s classical philosophical ideas are adaptively and vividly reflected in three main pillars: the normative aspect, which positions tawhid as an overarching worldview through cross-disciplinary assignments and structured daily religious habituation; the humanistic aspect, which recognizes students' multidimensional fitrah through holistic evaluation and academic writing autonomy; and the systemic aspect, which demonstrates a dynamic and flexible stance in responding to curriculum transitions. The primary contribution of this study provides empirical evidence that Al-Syaibany’s classical philosophy can be realistically and adaptively implemented in modern schools to address contemporary challenges. This research also enriches Islamic education curriculum studies, serves as a guideline for teachers in integrating knowledge, and offers insights for policymakers.

Abstract

This study explores how Social Emotional Learning (SEL) is integrated into Islamic Education to support akhlak formation among elementary school students in the Society 5.0 era. It also examines how SEL competencies are reflected in Islamic Education practices and how they appear to support students' socio-emotional and moral development. This study employed a qualitative descriptive design within a constructivist paradigm. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews with three Islamic Education teachers and three fourth-grade students, as well as document analysis of teachers' lesson plans (RPP), at SD Yasporbi III. Participants were selected using purposive sampling. The data were analyzed using thematic analysis through coding, categorization, interpretation, and triangulation. The findings indicate that SEL-related practices were integrated into Islamic Education through religious habituation, reflective activities, emotional guidance, dialogue, restorative approaches, and collaborative learning. These practices appeared to support the development of socio-emotional competencies, including emotional regulation, empathy, self-awareness, and responsible decision-making, which participants perceived to be associated with students' akhlak development. The findings also suggest that the Society 5.0 era presents challenges to akhlak formation through increased digital media exposure, online interactions, and technological distractions, highlighting the importance of strengthening students' self-regulation and digital responsibility. Furthermore, the study identified initial conceptual components of an SEL-integrated Islamic Education framework that combines cognitive, spiritual, emotional, and social dimensions of learning. This study contributes to the discourse on integrative Islamic Education by demonstrating how selected SEL competencies can be contextualized within Islamic moral and spiritual values, particularly through practices that foster self-awareness (muhasabah), self-regulation (sabr), empathy (rahmah), and responsible decision-making (amanah). Unlike previous studies that have primarily examined SEL from secular educational perspectives or discussed Islamic moral education separately, this study offers a contextual perspective on integrating SEL with Islamic values to support akhlak formation in elementary Islamic Education. Rather than proposing a validated instructional model, the study identifies initial conceptual components that may inform future research on SEL-integrated Islamic Education in the Society 5.0 era.

Abstract

Abstract

Islamic Religious Education (IRE) in the 21st century faces significant challenges in adapting to technological advancements and demands for student centered, active learning approaches. Traditional teacher centered methods remain dominant, limiting students’ opportunities to develop critical thinking, collaboration, and reflective skills. Thile existing literature has examined cooperative learning broadly, scholarship specifically analyzing the Group Investigation (GI) model’s constructivist foundations within IRE contexts remains limited. This study aims to analyze the constructivist foundations of the GI model and examine its relevance to IRE instruction. Using a qualitative library research method, this study reviewed book, journals, and academic articles from Scopus, Google Scholar, and DOAJ databases through descriptive analytical methods. The findings demonstrate that the GI represents a concrete application of social constructivism, emphasizing learners’ active roles in constructing knowledge through collaborative investigation. Most significantly, the study reveals that Islamic ethical principles such as ta’awun, ukhuwah, and musyawarah do not merely coexist with constructivist pedagogy but actively enhances learning outcomes, develops 4C skills (Critical Thinking, Communication, Collaboration, Creativity), and facilitates internalization of Islamic values. Theoretically, this study demonstrates how constructivist pedagogy can be successfully integrated with Islamic education frameworks. Practically, it aligns with Kurikulum Merdeka principles promoting active, participatory, and meaningful learning.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to analyze the role of the da’wah of KH. Choer Affandi, founder of the Miftahul Huda Manonjaya Islamic boarding school in Indonesia, from historical, political, and educational perspectives. This study employs a qualitative approach and descriptive methods. The research findings indicate that the history of the establishment of the Miftahul Huda Manojaya Islamic Boarding School began with KH. Choer Affandi’s experience with political Islam, which started while he was a student at the Sukamanah Islamic Boarding School led by KH. Zainal Musthafa, and the Gunung Puyuh Islamic Boarding School led by KH. Ahmad Sanusi. The DI/TII was a historical event in the journey of the Indonesian nation that has long been viewed by the Unitary State of the Republic of Indonesia as a “rebellion.” In explaining Choer Affandi’s biography, one must inevitably address the DI/TII event. After K.H. Choer Affandi came down from the mountains, his method of struggle eventually shifted toward education through the establishment of an Islamic boarding school. This marked the turning point in Choer Affandi’s struggle: from the initial “jihad bil qital” (struggle through combat) by taking up arms in the mountains, it shifted to “jihad bil fikroh” (struggle through thought), where he assumed the role of a scholar as the “Warasatul Anbiya” (heir to the prophets). The Miftahul Huda Islamic Boarding School was founded on August 7, 1967, by K.H. Choer Affandi. Since its establishment in 1967, the Miftahul Huda Islamic boarding school has had a significant social and religious impact on the community of Manonjaya, Tasikmalaya Regency. KH. Choer Affandi met Buya Hamka and M. Natsir while performing the Hajj in 1974. KH. Choer Affandi’s role in da’wah extended beyond the local community of Tasikmalaya—where he initiated the establishment of the Tasikmalaya Islamic Hospital—and was undeniably significant on the national stage as well. KH. Choer Affandi was one of the founders of the West Java Islamic Boarding School Cooperation Agency (BKsPP). Later, Pondok Gontor, Diniyyah Putri Padang Panjang, and others joined, so that the BKsPP, which initially covered West Java, became a national organization known as the Indonesian Islamic Boarding School Cooperation Agency (BKsPPI).

Abstract

Modern education faces the challenge of moral degradation, which demands character interventions beyond classical approaches. This study aims to examine the managerial mechanisms of the Islamic Personal Development Program at SMP IT Fitrah Hanniah, which serves as a holistic ecosystem for moral cultivation. Employing a qualitative case-study design, data were extracted from multi-actor interviews, small-group participatory observations, and evaluation documentation and subsequently analyzed using an interactive reduction scheme. The findings confirm that stable character formation is realized through three managerial reconfigurations. In the planning phase, the curriculum is centrally controlled by the foundation, which tactically restructures the class into small groups of up to ten 10 students. During the implementation phase, the program shifts away from cognitive transmission orientation to prioritize emotional bonding and exemplary imitation through varied educative methods. In the evaluation phase, the school exclusively uses observation-based qualitative assessments and daily track records, followed by educational disciplinary measures. The conclusion of this study asserts that internal governance reconfigurations are proven effective in instilling discipline in daily worship. However, the ultimate manifestation of social morality strictly requires the reinforcement of supervisory synergy from parents to sustain behavioral habits outside school hours. Consequently, these findings recommend a more binding model of family involvement within the governance of character education.

Abstract

Purpose This study aims to examine the moral-spiritual values embedded in the book Ta'lim Muta'allim and their relevance in addressing the crisis of students' courtesy towards teachers in the contemporary era. Methods This research employs a qualitative approach. The primary data source is the book Ta'lim Muta'allim, analyzed through the perspective of moral and spiritual education. Secondary data were acquired through in-depth interviews with high school teachers and students to explore their perceptions regarding students' moral-spiritual attitudes toward teachers. Findings The results indicate that students possess a highly positive perception of the moral-spiritual values derived from the book Ta’lim Muta’allim. Similarly, teachers also demonstrated a high perception regarding these values. Research Implications Integrating the teachings of Ta'lim Muta'allim into the modern educational system, specifically within moral-spiritual education, can serve as a viable solution to overcome the moral crisis among students. This study recommends implementing the moral-spiritual values from Ta'lim Muta'allim as an integral component of the character-based education curriculum in schools to strengthen students' moral and spiritual attitudes towards their teachers. Originality The decline in students' respect and courtesy towards teachers in the modern era has emerged as a serious issue within the educational sphere. Cultural shifts driven by digital technological advancements have displaced moral-spiritual values, particularly concerning student-teacher interactions. The book Ta'lim Muta'allim by Sheikh Az-Zarnuji offers a relevant solution through its moral and spiritual teachings on the pursuit of knowledge.
