Abstract

AbstractThis study examines the benefits and barriers of implementing the Reading Aloud strategy for young readers, particularly at the elementary school level. Through a theoretical research approach, we analyze recent literature and studies from 2019-2023 to provide a comprehensive understanding of how this strategy shapes early literacy development. The research highlights the multifaceted benefits of Reading Aloud, including enhanced vocabulary acquisition, improved comprehension skills, increased fluency and prosody, and the fostering of critical thinking abilities. These advantages are grounded in established educational theories such as Vygotsky's Zone of Proximal Development and Bandura's Social Learning Theory. However, the study also identifies several barriers to effective implementation, including time constraints, the need for proper training, and the challenge of selecting appropriate reading materials. The paper discusses strategies to overcome these obstacles and explores the potential of integrating modern technologies to enhance this fundamental literacy practice. By synthesizing current research and analyzing emerging trends, this study offers valuable insights for educators, parents, and policymakers striving to nurture a new generation of literate and engaged readers. The findings underscore the continued relevance and effectiveness of the Reading Aloud strategy in contemporary educational settings, supporting its implementation as a versatile tool for literacy instruction across various learning environments. Keywords: Educational strategies, elementary education, literacy development, reading aloud, young readers.

Abstract

This study examines the vitality of the Lampung language in urban areas of North Lampung, addressing the ongoing phenomenon of mother tongue language shift. Employing an ethnolinguistic framework with a combination of quantitative and qualitative methodologies, the research engaged 200 respondents across two age groups (15–30 years and >30 years) from three regions: Kotabumi, South Kotabumi, and North Kotabumi. Data collection was conducted via questionnaires, with analysis guided by UNESCO's language vitality parameters and results visualized using the ArcGIS application. Findings indicate that the Lampung language holds a "vulnerable" vitality status, with an average index score of 0.56. Notably, three parameters were identified as critical: intergenerational transmission (0.46), domains of language use (0.49), and new media and domains (0.38). These results underscore a persistent language shift over the past decade and provide an empirical basis for formulating policies aimed at revitalizing and preserving the Lampung language in urban contexts.

Abstract

Abstract

In learning a language, the first thing to grasp is words. One method of word formation is compounding, which involves combining two elements from existing words to create a new word. Compounds are categorized into three groups based on the part of speech: nominal compounds, verbal compounds, and adjectival compounds. The formation of compound words gives rise to their meaning, involving two kinds of semantic headedness—namely, endocentric compounds and exocentric compounds. These compound words can be identified in articles from the education issue of The Jakarta Post edition from April 2021. The objectives of this study are as follows: (1) to identify the types of compound words; (2) to determine the semantic headedness of compound words; and (3) to calculate the percentages of compound types and semantic headedness. The study employs a qualitative descriptive method. The results reveal three types of compound words: nominal compounds (656 words), verbal compounds (2 words), and adjectival compounds (5 words). Additionally, two types of compound words were identified—650 words were endocentric compounds, and 16 words were exocentric compounds. The percentages of compound word types were as follows: 98.5% nominal compounds, 0.3% verbal compounds, and 1.2% adjectival compounds. Meanwhile, the percentages of semantic headedness were 97.60% for endocentric compounds and 2.40% for exocentric compounds. This study provides valuable information about compound words in the context of language learning.
