Abstract

Orchids are an important horticultural commodity in Indonesia with high economic and conservation value; however, their sustainability is threatened by abiotic stress, such as salinity. This study aims to screen the resistance of Dendrobiumsp., Phalaenopsis sp., and Vanda sp. to NaCl salinity stress. The study used a completely randomized design (CRD) with three replications. The treatment, in the form of giving 1%, 5%, and 10% NaCl, was compared with the control. The morphological response and physiological content, including chlorophyll content (mg/L), were then observed. The results showed that chlorophyll content decreased significantly with increasing NaCl concentration. Total chlorophyll of Phalaenopsis sp. decreased sharply with increasing NaCl concentration from 5.25 mg/L (control), 3.78 mg/L (1%), 1.74 mg/L (5%) and 0.54 mg/L (10%); In contrast to Dendrobium sp. which showed fluctuations from 5.02 mg/L (control), 8.20 mg/L (1%), 3.74 mg/L (5%) and 4.05 mg/L (10%). While Vanda sp. experienced a moderate decrease from 9.42 mg/L (control), 9.41 mg/L (1%), 4.53 mg/L (5%), and 4.26 mg/L (10%). The relative resistance order was Vanda sp.  Dendrobium sp.  Phalaenopsis sp. Phalaenopsis sp. was the most susceptible plant to salinity, with a sharp decrease in chlorophyll and severe morphological symptoms of the necrotic type, while Vanda sp. showed the most tolerant response with a smaller decrease in chlorophyll. In general, NaCl has been shown to drastically suppress chlorophyll content and is a significant limiting factor for the sustainability of orchid cultivation.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the vegetation structure and composition of the Coban Talun Pine Forest in Batu City, East Java, Indonesia, using a plot-based approach. A quantitative descriptive method was applied through field surveys conducted in six sampling plots measuring 1.5 m × 1.5 m. A total of 24 plant species were identified, consisting of herbs, grasses, shrubs, ferns, bryophytes, and limited tree regeneration. The vegetation was dominated by understory species, particularly Paspalum conjugatum, Colocasia esculenta, and Marsilea crenata. Vegetation structure was analyzed using ecological parameters including density, frequency, and dominance, which were further integrated into the Important Value Index (IVI). The results showed that Paspalum conjugatum had the highest IVI value, indicating its strong ecological dominance and adaptability. Overall, the vegetation structure was uneven, with dominance concentrated in a few species, reflecting a moderately diverse but disturbance-influenced ecosystem. Environmental factors such as altitude, temperature, and light availability contributed to the observed vegetation patterns. The findings provide baseline ecological data that can support biodiversity conservation and sustainable forest management in the Coban Talun area.

Abstract

Differences in environmental conditions between wetland and dryland areas are presumed to affect the morphological characteristics of oil palm (Elaeis guineensis Jacq.) in Ogan Komering Ulu (OKU) Regency, South Sumatra, in both vegetative and generative growth, while in-depth studies on the morphology of fruits, stems, and leaves across these two land types remain limited. This study aimed to describe the morphological differences of oil palm grown on wetland and dryland sites and to develop the findings into a contextual educational leaflet as a learning medium. A descriptive qualitative approach was employed through field observations in Airwall Village and Markisa Village, Lubuk Batang Subdistrict, OKU, with purposive sampling of productive and healthy oil palm plants. Data were collected through direct observation, interviews, and documentation, and were analyzed descriptively. The results show that oil palm grown on wetland areas has larger fruits with bright orange coloration, taller and more slender stems, and dense dark green leaves as a consequence of relatively optimal water and nutrient availability; conversely, oil palm on dryland exhibits smaller and duller fruits, shorter stems, and yellowish-green leaves that reflect drought stress and nutrient deficiency. These morphological findings were then packaged in the form of a contextual educational leaflet that visually compares plant characteristics in the two land types as an engaging, practical, and environmentally based biology learning medium. The study concludes that environmental conditions have a marked influence on oil palm morphology and that the findings have the potential to be utilized as innovative teaching materials in contextual biology learning in schools.
