Abstract

At the vocational high school level in Indonesia, English language teaching is still general with minimal ESP additions, so it is not enough to equip students to be able to communicate using English according to their future field of work. English material in Health Vocational High Schools is less focused on the specific needs of the health sector. The lack of variety of fun learning activities makes students less interested and motivated to learn English, especially related to health terms. Therefore, innovative and comprehensive learning is needed with materials that are appropriate for the needs of students as prospective nursing assistants. One of them is by utilizing crossword puzzle games and yes/no questions. The programs that have been implemented have proven effective in increasing students' interest in learning and their understanding of vocabulary related to body parts and health problems. This shows that a fun and interactive approach can be a good solution in learning English in Health Vocational High Schools.

Abstract

This study aims to determine the teaching strategies used by Japanese language lecturers. This study was designed as a qualitative descriptive study. Conjugation in Japanese is diverse, but the author only discusses the Drill learning model to facilitate mastery of Japanese nursing vocabulary according to the research conducted by the author. From the information obtained, 69.1% of students' responses stated that they agreed that they enjoyed learning using the Drill method. This shows that the Drill learning method can attract students' interest in learning to speak Japanese. With the drill method, students are more motivated to remember nursing vocabulary and expressions spoken repeatedly, which means they are motivated to speak because speaking in Japanese is not boring. Students can also exchange ideas with their friends if they find words that are difficult. One of the benefits of this method is that learning can be done anywhere and anytime. The questionnaire results showed that 74.5% of students strongly agreed with using the Drill method. The drill method in learning Japanese, especially in speaking skills (kaiwa), can help because students can work together if they have difficulty speaking Japanese. As many as 69.1% of students agreed they enjoyed learning using the Drill method. The obstacles students face can be overcome because when teaching material about nursing vocabulary and pronunciation in Japanese, the lecturer uses the Drill method to make nursing vocabulary easy for students to remember.

Abstract

English language learning in vocational schools aims to provide students with language skills that can maximally support the competence of the specific field of expertise that students have. However, English teaching in many vocational schools, such as the Bali Medika Health Vocational School, is not designed as English for Specific Purposes (ESP), thus found to be insufficient to equip students to communicate using English in their target career. In addition, the teachers at this school revealed that it is difficult to find the kind of activities that can be organized to make learning English interesting and to choose material that is suitable to the needs of students as a future nurse assistant. Therefore, an innovative learning activity is needed to assist teachers in delivering teaching material that is suitable and relevant to the student’s target career. Learning through games such as word grouping and whispering was organized in the class to teach students the specialized nursing vocabulary. At the evaluation, students reported that learning nursing vocabulary through word-grouping and whispering activities was fun, and they could understand the material well. The learning activities helped them enrich their nursing vocabularies and they were very satisfied with the English learning in this program. Keywords: ESP, games, nursing vocabulary, word-grouping, whispering.
