Abstract

The increment of peat soil productivity meets through ameliorant addition. Ameliorant sources can be obtained from oil palm plantation and electric steam power station waste. The study aimed at investigating the ability of the oil palm fruit empty bunch (OPFEB) biochar, palm oil boiler ash (POBA) and coal fly ash (CFA) as alternative ameliorants besides compost to improve nutrient availability in peat soil of Central Kalimantan. Treatments tested were OPFEB biochar, POBA, CFA, compost, OPFEB biochar+compost, POBA+compost, and CFA+compost. The seven treatments were arranged in a completely randomized design of single factor with four replications. The results revealed that the ameliorants increased peat soil pH at a rate of 0.7 compared to those in initial soil used and available P of 135.7% even though there was no significant increment of exchangeable cations of K, Ca and Mg. Mixing of biochar, POBA or CFA with compost improved nutrients availability in peat soil.

Abstract

Bawang dayak is a medicinal plant and can be grown as an economical crop with great potential value. Its contains secondary metabolites with biological activities that are important for human health. The main problem related with the production of bawang dayak is the standard of cultivation. The goal of the experiment was to study the effects of organic fertilizers and growing media on the growth and yield of bawang dayak. The polybag experiment was performed with two factors, namely soil type and organic fertilizer by Factorial Completely Randomized Design and located in the greenhouse of University of Palangka Raya. The treatments were chicken manure, oil palm empty-fruit-bunch compost (OPEFBC), and NASA granule as organic fertilizers, while Histosol and Ultisol served as growing media treatment. The results showed that OPEFBC gave the highest in Ultisol and chicken manure in Histosol to improve plant height. The highest number of tubers were developed in Ultisol. Chicken manure improved P and Fe bulbs tissue whereas the content of N and K bulbs grown in Ultisol was higher than those in Histosol.

Abstract

The objectives of the study are to determine the effect of both type and dosage of aquatic plants bokashi on the growth and yield of red onion in alluvial soil. The research design used was Factorial Completely Randomized Design (CRD) consisting of two factors, namely type and the dose of aquatic plants bokashi. The first factor consisted of three types of bokashi, i.e., giant Salvinia (Salvinia molesta), water cabbage (Pistia stratiotes) and water hyacinth (Eichornia crassipes), respectively. The second factor were four levels of bokashi dosage which were 0 tons ha-1, 10 tons ha-1 (0.2 kg/polybag), 20 tons ha-1 (0.5 kg/polybag) and 30 tons ha-1 (0.8 kg/polybag). The study was conducted from March to May 2017, located in the greenhouse of the Department of Agronomy, Faculty of Agriculture, University of Palangka Raya. The results showed that there was no interaction between the type and dose of bokashi on all variables observed. The dosage of bokashi affected plant height, leaf number, fresh weight and dry weight of biomass per clump, dry weight of bulbs and tuber diameter, but did not significantly affect the number of bulbs. The bokashi type did not significantly affect all observed variables. However, the water hyacinth bokashi tended to be better than other treatments
