Abstract

This study aimed to find information about students’ internal problems in the academic speaking subject as well as students’ efforts to overcome the problems. The participants in this study were students who had passed the subject in the 2018 academic year in a private university in Bogor. This study was a qualitative research by using questionnaires and interviews as research instruments to explore information related to the two research questions: 1) what are the students’ internal problems in the academic speaking subject? and 2) what are the students' efforts to overcome the problems? This study discovered four kinds of internal problems, namely: the problems in expressing ideas, applying correct grammar patterns, speaking anxiety, and low motivation. This study also discovered students’ efforts to overcome the problems, including preparing the material to be discussed, practicing speaking up with friends, practicing pronouncing English words correctly, learning grammar, vocabulary and pronunciation from grammar books, dictionary, and English learning applications. The findings of this study are expected to be useful, not only for students to keep doing the efforts in improving their speaking skills, but also for teachers to support students’ efforts to overcome the internal problems in the academic speaking subject

Abstract

Vocabulary plays a crucial role in communication and is considered one of the important aspects of the English language. Insufficient vocabulary knowledge can impede the process of learning English. Technology can serve as a valuable option for learning English vocabulary, as it provides various resources such as language learning apps that can enhance vocabulary and language skills. Quizlet is one such application that assists students in learning vocabulary concepts interactively and enjoyably. Student perceptions in learning activities are important things to know. This study aims to find out how students perceive the use of the Quizlet application in learning vocabulary whether they have negative or positive perceptions. This study uses qualitative methods in data collection. Ten students from grade seven became participants in this study. Researchers used two instruments, namely questionnaires and interviews. After distributing the questionnaires to students, the researcher also conducted interviews with five students to obtain more detailed information. The results showed that students had a positive perception of using Quizlet.

Abstract

Many experts undeniably acknowledge the effectiveness of story-retelling activities in improving many aspects of learning. This case study investigates how story-retelling activity impacts the student’s communication strategy. The study involved a teacher and a five-year-old student at an Islamic kindergarten. Data was gathered through direct observation and interviews. The teacher’s activity in telling a story and the student’s retelling activity were recorded. Then, the utterances produced by the teacher and the student were transcribed and compared based on the SNAP procedure proposed by Strong. The assessment had four criteria: story length, error type, comprehension type, and story grammar. The assessment explained to what extent the student understood the story told by the teacher. With his understanding, the student struggled to deliver the story using a communication strategy. It was found that the student’s story length was 27% of the teacher’s story length. He made four types of errors, performed 83% factual type comprehension, fulfilled all components in the story grammar, and applied both avoidance and compensatory communication strategies. The results of research data analysis show that retelling activities have triggered the implementation of communication. From a language education perspective, communication strategy is part of communicative competence.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze teachers' perspectives on the implementation of the Understanding by Design (UbD) framework in lesson planning at the junior and senior high school levels. A qualitative design method with an inductive analysis approach was used in this study. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews with seven participants, all of whom are English language teachers at the junior and senior high school levels. The findings reveal that the majority of teachers have a good to very good understanding of the UbD and Backward Design concepts, with only one respondent showing a low level of understanding. Most of the teachers have implemented UbD in their teaching practices and demonstrate a high commitment to self-development in applying UbD. However, two respondents reported a moderate level of self-development. These findings indicate that teachers are relatively familiar with the basic concepts of UbD, but challenges remain in ongoing professional development. This study suggests the need for more intensive support and continuous training to maximize the implementation of UbD in the classroom.

Abstract

This study investigates the pedagogical potential of The Miracle Worker (1962) as a teaching medium in Language Acquisition courses, with a dual focus on linguistic development and character education. Employing a qualitative descriptive method with film content analysis, the research systematically examines key scenes and character interactions to identify how theoretical principles of language acquisition—such as behaviorist, nativist, interactionist, and affective approaches—are reflected in Helen Keller’s learning journey. Data were collected through close scene analysis, thematic coding, and interpretation aligned with major theories of language development.  The findings reveal that the film presents a rich, multidimensional representation of the language acquisition process, highlighting the importance of tactile-based instruction, emotional support, and socially mediated interaction. Helen Keller’s journey illustrates that effective language learning is deeply influenced by both cognitive and affective factors. Traits such as perseverance, empathy, self-discipline, and emotional resilience are shown to facilitate communication and comprehension, suggesting a strong interdependence between character growth and linguistic development. The study concludes that The Miracle Worker is a powerful educational tool that can enhance students’ understanding of language acquisition concepts while also promoting reflective discussion on inclusive, empathetic teaching practices. By integrating academic content with character values, the film exemplifies a holistic approach to language education that addresses both intellectual and personal dimensions of learning. Keywords: The Miracle Worker, language acquisition, character education, content analysis, holistic education

Abstract

Knowing the rules which organize the target language has been the concern of many experts to facilitate language learning and teaching. The rules are not only in the level of sentence but also in the level of discourse. This study is trying to find out the rules in discourse level, especially the pattern of speech act on asking for apology. This study is aimed at knowing the speech act set of apologizingy made by students to lecturers, students to students, the acceptability of the patterns, and the factors which may influence the acceptability of the expressions used for apology. There were thirty five respondents; twenty respondents should give information about expressions for apology, fifteen other respondents give their opinion about the acceptability of the expressions.Using the procedure in discourse analysis, the writer found that respondents produced different set of speech act. Other speech act may accompany speech act for apology both before and after it; i.e. greeting, explanation, acknowledgement of responsibility, an offer of repair, request, thank, and informing. The study also found the most common pattern;i.e.apology+ aknowledgment for student-lecturer interaction and apology+explanation for student-student interaction. The acceptability of the pattern does not only depend on the linguistic choice such as lexical, grammatical, and prosodic features but also paralinguistic features such as gestures, eye contact, body movement. Another important aspect for acceptability is the interpersonal relationship between the participants and their background. The findings in this study would give illustration about the rules of apology used by the learners. If it is compared to rules in the target language(English), using contrastive analysis procedure, we would find the obstacles meet by the students in acquiring the speechact of Englishapology.

Abstract

Effective teaching relies heavily on intentional instructional planning that aligns learning goals, assessments, and activities. The Understanding by Design (UbD) framework, known for its backward design approach, has been adopted within Indonesia’s Merdeka Curriculum to promote coherence and purpose in learning. However, its implementation across schools varies significantly, often shaped by leadership practices and local policy enforcement. This study investigates how school leadership influences the implementation of UbD in English teaching modules at two public secondary schools in Bogor City. Employing qualitative content analysis, the research draws on data from curriculum documents, semi-structured teacher interviews, and classroom observations. Findings reveal that one school demonstrates effective UbD integration, driven by assertive leadership, clear policy communication, and routine monitoring. In contrast, the second school shows fragmented implementation due to limited leadership involvement and a lack of institutional reinforcement. These contrasting cases highlight that while teacher understanding is necessary, school leadership plays a pivotal role in translating national curriculum mandates into coherent instructional practice. The study underscores the importance of proactive leadership and coordinated policy support to ensure the consistent and meaningful adoption of curriculum frameworks like UbD in schools.
