Abstract

ABSTRACTIntroduction: Interactions among competing bacteria, which inhibit each other's growth to maintain the balance of microorganisms in the biofilm, can influence oral cavity homeostasis. Natural products contain compounds with the potential to combat various diseases, including caries. Alpha-mangostin from Garcinia mangostana. L exhibits antibacterial properties against oral streptococci and staphylococci, acting through several mechanisms, including the disruption of peptidoglycan, which ultimately leads to cell brittleness and rupture. This study aims to assess the impact of antibacterial alpha-mangostin on oral streptococci and staphylococci biofilm. Methods: The research methodology employed secondary data collection through a systematic review study. We conducted searches across databases including PubMed, ScienceDirect, and Google Scholar to identify Indonesian and English references encompassing textbooks, research findings, reviews, and internet articles relevant to the topic published between 2014 and 2024. Following a thorough screening process, we selected articles deemed pertinent for inclusion in the review. Subsequently, these articles underwent evaluation for full-text accessibility, language compatibility, and availability of information from the respective journals, resulting in the selection of 20 articles. Results: Analysis was carried out on 20 articles. Ten articles described the effects of alpha-mangostin's inhibit oral biofilm, 6 articles discussed the effects of alpha-mangostin's antibacterial activity against Streptococcus mutans and Streptococcus sanguis, 3 article state mechanism alpha-mangostin inhibit membrane enzymes such as F(H+)-ATPase and the phosphoenolpyruvate-sucrose phosphotransferase system on Staphylococcus aureus. Additionally, one article described inhibition mechanisms of aldolase, glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate dehydrogenase, and lactic dehydrogenase on Staphylococcus epidermidis. Conclusion: Alpha-mangostin inhibits and disrupts biofilm defense mechanisms. It possesses antimicrobial properties effective against oral streptococci and staphylococci, including Streptococcus mutans, Streptococcus sanguis, Staphylococcus aureus and Staphylococcus epidermidis. These properties operate through various mechanisms, including enhancing the permeability of bacterial cell walls, ultimately leading to bacterial cell death.KEYWORDSOral biofilm, alpha-mangostin, oral streptococci, staphylococci

Abstract

Background: An incision wound is a type of open wound obtained using a scalpel by paying attention to the size, location and purpose of the wound. Collagen has an important role during the wound healing process. The content that can trigger the formation of collagen is phenolic compounds such as oleuropein, oleocanthal, and luteolin that can be found in olive oil. This study aims to determine the effect of olive oil cream 5% on the amounts of collagen on incision wounds process.Method: A quasy experimental design in vivo with a post-test only control group design on 12 wistar rats. The control group and the experimental group with 5% olive oil cream. Incision wounds was seen from the amount of collagen using One-Way Anova analysis.Result: The study showed that there was a significant effect of 5% olive oil on the amount of collagen with a significance of 0.000 (0<0.05).The results between the control group and the treatment had significant differences on 3th and 5th days. Conclusion: The conclusion is that there is an effect of giving 5% olive oil cream on the amount of collagen in the healing process of wistar incision lips.

Abstract

Introduction : Mandibular angle fractures frequently result from trauma and are often complicated by the presence of impacted third molars, which can increase the risk of infection. Case(s) : This case report presents 2 cases of mandibular angle fractures involving the third molar. In the first case, the tooth was not extracted during the previous surgery, and an infection occurred during 6 months post-ORIF. The second case, ORIF was performed along with the extraction of the third molar followed by inter-maxillary fixation, resulting in satisfactory outcomes. Conclusion: Tooth involved in fractures line can increase infection risk. Extraction of impacted third molars within the fracture line can help reduce infection risk and promote healing.

Abstract

Abstract

Background: The intricate process of tooth formation during embryonic development ensures sufficient nutrition for the growth of healthy dental tissues. Amelogenin and alkaline phosphatase (ALP) are serine proteinases secreted by the ameloblast during the transition and maturation phases of the amelogenesis process. Consumption of saltwater fish is predicted to increase the expression of amelogenin and ALP in ameloblast cells during tooth formation. Only now have the function of each gene, tooth-forming cells, and the proteins they produce in the biomolecular amelogenesis of tooth enamel, which began during prenatal development, been clarified. Purpose: This study aims to determine how saltwater fish powder affects the ability of mother mice to increase the expression of amelogenin and ALP in cell ameloblast. Methods: Using a completely randomized design, this study was experimental and aimed to examine the effects of sardine (Sardinella fimbriata), splendid ponyfish (Leiognathus splendens), and tuna (Euthynnus affinis) powder. As samples, twenty-four female mice (Mus musculus) were used. Two groups of mice were created: group 1 (2.14 mg/0.5 ml) and the control group. The expression of amelogenin and ALP was determined using immunohistochemistry (IHC) and t-test (p0.05). Results: Expression of ameloblast was significantly different between the treatment and control groups (p0.05). Conclusion: The consumption of saltwater fish reduces the amelogenin and ALP expressions of mouse fetal ameloblast cells during tooth development in vivo.
