Abstract

This research investigate the translation technique applied in the sarcasm, the process of applying the translation technique to the sarcasm, and finally to find which the most use translation technique. This research use the dialogue as the data from the film “The BigBang Theory” season 1 from episode 1-8 as the source of data. This research uses the theory of translation techniques as proposed by Molina & Albir (2002:509) there are 18 techniques proposed by Molina and Albir but in this research the researcher only uses five of the techniques. The method of this research is qualitative method. The findings of this research from the five techniques are adaptation with 30 times, literal translation with 36 times, discursive creation with 11 times, amplification with 5 times, and reduction with 14 times.

Abstract

The role of English teachers' speech functions as socio-semiotic resources is undeniably crucial in shaping student learning engagement, yet its psychological impact remains under-explored in Indonesian English as a Foreign Language (EFL) classrooms. This study aimed to systematically investigate the types of speech functions utilized by EFL educators and critically analyze their direct socio-semiotic impact on students' behavioral, emotional, and cognitive engagement. Employing a qualitative descriptive design framed within Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL), the research involved twenty eleventh-grade students and their teachers over a four-week naturalistic observation period. Data were rigorously collected through high-fidelity audiovisual recordings, multidimensional engagement observation protocols, and stimulated-recall interviews for methodological triangulation. Preliminary baseline data indicated that 80% of the students exhibited merely low to moderate engagement, relying heavily on superficial behavioral compliance. The subsequent linguistic discourse analysis empirically revealed that the teachers' dominant use of unmitigated commands and declarative statements created a highly restrictive semiotic environment that actively stifled spontaneous participation. Conversely, the strategic deployment of authentic, open-ended questions and supportive pedagogical offers functioned as inviting semiotic signs that significantly elevated students' emotional security and cognitive effort. The study concludes that a teacher's linguistic choices are not neutral instructional mechanisms, but rather powerful semiotic instruments that fundamentally construct or deconstruct the psychological reality of the learning space..

Abstract

This study aims to examine the effect of cultural identity representation in selected British literary works on the cross-cultural understanding of Indonesian undergraduate students. The research is motivated by the limited ability of students to interpret cultural identity represented in literary texts and to relate those representations to broader social and cultural contexts. A mixed-methods approach was employed by integrating qualitative literary analysis with quantitative investigation of students' responses. The participants consisted of twenty undergraduate students enrolled in an English Literature program who participated in a literature-based instructional intervention. Data were collected through literary text analysis, pre-test and post-test questionnaires, classroom observations, reflective journals, and semi-structured interviews. Qualitative data were analyzed using thematic analysis, while quantitative data were examined using descriptive and inferential statistical techniques. The findings indicate that prior to the intervention, students demonstrated a moderate level of cross-cultural understanding, with a mean pre-test score of 62.45. Following the implementation of literature-based learning activities, the participants showed noticeable improvement in recognizing cultural identity representation, appreciating cultural diversity, developing empathy, and strengthening intercultural communication skills. Qualitative findings further revealed that collaborative discussions, reflective reading, and critical literary analysis encouraged students to construct broader perspectives on cultural diversity and intercultural relationships. The study concludes that cultural identity representation in British literary works has a positive influence on Indonesian undergraduate students' cross-cultural understanding when supported by structured, reflective, and student-centered instructional strategies. These findings contribute to the advancement of literary studies, cultural studies, and intercultural communication while providing practical implications for the development of English literature curricula and literature-based intercultural learning in Indonesian higher education.

Abstract

The increasing use of authentic English materials in Indonesian English as a Foreign Language (EFL) classrooms has highlighted the need to understand the syntactic characteristics of newspaper discourse. However, limited studies have comprehensively examined the syntactic features of English news articles and their implications for English language teaching in Indonesia. This study aimed to analyze the syntactic features employed in The Jakarta Post news articles and explore their pedagogical implications for English language teaching. A qualitative descriptive design was adopted using document analysis. The data consisted of twenty news articles selected through purposive sampling from The Jakarta Post. The collected data were analyzed through data condensation, data display, and conclusion drawing following the interactive model proposed by Miles, Huberman, and Saldaña. The findings revealed that all four major sentence types—simple, compound, complex, and compound-complex—were identified, with complex sentences occurring most frequently. The analysis also indicated the extensive use of coordination and subordination to organize information effectively in authentic journalistic discourse. These findings suggest that The Jakarta Post provides authentic linguistic input that can support the teaching of English syntax, reading comprehension, and academic writing. Consequently, authentic newspaper texts can serve as valuable instructional resources for enhancing students' syntactic awareness and bridging the gap between grammatical knowledge and real-world language use

Abstract

Speaking anxiety remains a major affective barrier in English as a Foreign Language (EFL) higher education. Although research since (Horwitz et al., 1986) has consistently shown a negative relationship between anxiety and performance, few studies have translated these findings into integrated instructional design. This developmental study investigates affective, linguistic, and pedagogical conditions in Indonesian undergraduate public speaking courses and proposes a Digital Case Study and Project-Based Learning (D-CS&PjBL) framework. Data were collected from 50 students and 7 lecturers using the Foreign Language Classroom Anxiety Scale (FLCAS), classroom observations, interviews, focus group discussion, and digital perception surveys. Results indicate that 42% of students experience high speaking anxiety, primarily driven by fear of negative evaluation. Code mixing emerged as cognitive affective scaffolding aligned with translanguaging theory, while asynchronous rehearsal through Flip enhanced confidence but lacked systematic integration. The porposed framework embeds translanguaging informed scaffolding and digital rehearsal within inquiry based project cycles. An effect size simulation (Cohen’s d=0.50) suggests moderate projected impact for future quasi experimental validation. The study contributes to affective second language acquisition research and multilingual digital pedagogy.
