Abstract

Ronggeng Gunung is a combined performing art which thrives especially in southern Ciamis (including Pamarican and Banjarsari) and Pangandaran (including Padaherang and Kalipucang). Generally, this is almost the same as the conventional ronggeng, in which a dancer performs while being accompanied by gamelan (Javanese/Sundanese music instrument) and kawih (Sundanese songs). The main ronggeng dancer is a woman who wears a shawl as a part of the dance to invite males to dance with her. Allegedly, in its mythological narratives, Ronggeng Gunung was created from the grief of a princess who lost her beloved husband and her attempt of revenge toward the killer. This paper is actually intended to find out how are the structures and meanings of Kawih as an inseparable part of Ronggeng Gunung performance. This study applies structuralism as both theoretical approach and method, since it provides the theoretical framework to find out both the structural construction and the meaning of the Kawih. The result of this study shows that kawih accompanying Ronggeng Gunung performance represents a passionate romance of solace, unrequited love, as well as the cultural values of modesty, politeness, and the importance of solidarity in facing every problem encountered by human.

Abstract

Abstract

The aim of this research is to categorize what types of overlap are constructed in Golden Globe Award Interview 2020 with Nicholas Braun by The Hollywood Reporter. In an interview, it is one of turn taking violations which still becomes a rife phenomenon where many speakers aren’t aware yet about it. The approach used in this research is descriptive qualitative by documentation technique. The main theory of overlap types is based on Schegloff (2000) and French & Local (1983). There are 13 data found which contain 11 non-competitive: 1 terminal overlap, 5 continuers, 4 conditional access to the turn, 1 choral and 2 competitive: 2 high pitch and increased loudness. So, it can be concluded that the most dominant of overlap type is continuers that categorized as unproblematic for the speakers and conversation structure. Because the next speakers used it to respect the current speakers. Therefore, this result is expected as one of overlap examples which can be applied.

Film, along with other literary works such as books, poetry and theater, is one of the mediums used in the contemporary day to communicate messages to society. Greta Gerwig adapted the film Little Women (2019) from the novel Little Women (1868) by Louisa May Alcott. This film shows a breakthrough over the prejudice and discrimination towards women in 19th-century cinema. The subject of female gaze has received attention since, up to this point, women have frequently only been shown as passive narrative objects, or even as the principal sexual objects in movies. Analyzing by comparing Laura Mulvey's theory regarding female gaze and male gaze through the phenomena contained in the film Little Women, which narrates the lives of five young women during their adolescent years. The image of women in the film Little Women does not appear as an object but a subject, the characters in the film Little appears strong, ambitious and optimistic. Little Women proves that Mulvey's theory of the patriarchal world is neither permanent nor obligatory.

In the process of adaptation the settings, the writer found 11 backgrounds that were reduced, 7 settings that were added, and 1 setting that underwent various changes. In this study, the authors found several influences related to the process of adaptation of intrinsic elements.First, when adaptations occur on intrinsic elements, not too many changes occur in the film. This change makes the film acceptable and in demand by the audience. Second, when several parts that are quite influential in the plot and setting are removed or changed, important things related to the story are eventually lost. Third, adaptations made in film settings provide many real-life images that novels cannot explain. The setting in the novel is made to look real and very good. Fourth, this film was closer to the tastes and conditions of society at that time, so that this film was more acceptable to the public.
