Abstract

Background: Adolescence is a transitional phase marked by biological changes, one of which is menstruation. A common problem during menstruation is dysmenorrhea or lower abdominal pain, which can interfere with quality of life and daily activities. One non-pharmacological effort to address this is consuming dark chocolate, which contains magnesium and triggers the release of endorphins as a natural pain reliever. Methods: This study used a quantitative method with a pre-experimental design through a one-group pretest-posttest design. The research population and sample consisted of 30 adolescent girls experiencing menstrual pain, selected using total sampling technique. Data analysis used the Wilcoxon Test to examine the effect before and after the intervention. Results: Before consuming dark chocolate, the majority of respondents experienced moderate pain (76.7%) and severe pain (16.7%). After the intervention, a significant reduction in pain level occurred, with 90% of respondents falling into the mild pain category and no respondents experiencing severe pain. The mean pain level decreased from 2.07 to 1.20 with a p-value = 0.000. Conclusion: The administration of dark chocolate has a significant effect on reducing the level of dysmenorrhea pain in adolescents at Puskesmas Ibu.

Abstract

Preterm birth remains a significant public health concern due to its contribution to neonatal morbidity and mortality worldwide. Among the various risk factors, maternal infections—particularly sexually transmitted infections (STIs)—have been identified as preventable yet critical determinants of premature delivery. This study aimed to examine the relationship between STIs and preterm birth among mothers receiving care at Tomalou Primary Health Care Center. A cross-sectional analytical design was employed, involving 30 postpartum mothers whose medical records and antenatal care data were available. Data on STI status and birth outcomes were collected from health center records and laboratory results, while maternal demographic and obstetric characteristics were also documented. Results indicated that 40% of participants were diagnosed with STIs during pregnancy, and 33.3% experienced preterm birth. Chi-square analysis revealed a significant association between maternal STI status and preterm delivery (p = 0.003). Logistic regression demonstrated that mothers with STIs were sixteen times more likely to deliver prematurely compared to uninfected mothers (OR = 16.0; 95% CI: 2.45–104.3; p = 0.002). These findings suggest that STIs represent a substantial risk factor for preterm birth, even among mothers with adequate antenatal care attendance. Early detection, timely treatment, and comprehensive reproductive health education are recommended to reduce infection-related adverse outcomes. Strengthening STI screening and management within primary healthcare settings is essential to improve maternal and neonatal health outcomes. This study provides evidence for the importance of integrating infection prevention strategies into routine antenatal care to mitigate the risk of premature delivery.

Abstract

Iron deficiency anemia is a significant public health problem in pregnant women, because it can cause maternal and fetal complications. Compliance with iron tablet consumption is often low due to limited knowledge, side effects, and cultural misconceptions. Leaflet-based education is a low-cost intervention that has the potential to improve understanding and compliance. This study aims to analyze the effect of leaflet education on the adherence of iron tablet consumption in pregnant women at the Pujon Health Center, Batu. The research design used a quasi-experiment with a pretest-posttest control group design. A total of 40 pregnant women were divided into an intervention group (n = 20) that received leaflet education and a control group (n = 20) that received standard counseling. Compliance was measured over four weeks through self-consumption records and tablet count calculations, while knowledge was assessed with a structured questionnaire. Data analysis used the Chi-square test with a significance level of p < 0.05. Results showed a significant improvement in adherence in the intervention group, with 70% of pregnant women complying compared to 15% in the control group (p = 0.001). Leaflet education also increased knowledge scores and consistency of iron tablet consumption. The conclusion of this study confirms that leaflet education is effective in increasing iron supplementation adherence, so it is recommended to be integrated into routine antenatal services to prevent anemia and support maternal and fetal health.

Abstract

Background: Sectio Caesarea (SC) surgery causes an incision wound in the abdomen, requiring a complex tissue healing process. Nutrition is a primary systemic factor supporting cell regeneration and new tissue formation through the intake of protein, vitamins, and minerals. However, many postpartum mothers still practice dietary restrictions due to misconceptions about the wound healing process. Objective: To determine the relationship between nutritional fulfillment and wound healing duration in post-SC patients at Prof. Dr. R.D. Kandou General Hospital, Manado. Methods:This quantitative research used an observational analytic design with a cross-sectional approach. The sample consisted of 20 postpartum mothers after SC, selected using purposive sampling technique. Research instruments included a questionnaire and an observation sheet. Data were analyzed using Fisher's Exact Test (α=0.05). Results: The majority of respondents (55%) had good nutritional fulfillment, and 60% of respondents experienced rapid wound healing. Statistical test results showed a p-value = 0.005 (p < 0.05), indicating a significant relationship between nutritional fulfillment and wound healing duration. Respondents with good nutrition had a rapid wound healing percentage of 90.9%, while respondents with poor nutrition had a slow wound healing percentage of 77.8%. Conclusion: Adequate nutritional fulfillment plays a crucial role in accelerating the wound healing process after Sectio Caesarea surgery.

Abstract

Preoperative anxiety is common among women scheduled for cesarean section (C-section), affecting surgical outcomes, recovery, and bonding. This study investigated the effect of guided deep breathing relaxation on reducing preoperative anxiety in C-section patients. A quasi-experimental design with a pretest-posttest control group was conducted with 30 participants from [Name of Hospital]. Participants were randomly assigned to an intervention group (n = 15), which practiced deep breathing exercises 30 minutes before surgery, and a control group (n = 15) receiving standard care. Preoperative anxiety was assessed using the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI) before and after the intervention. Results showed a significant decrease in anxiety scores in the intervention group (from 45.2 ± 6.3 to 33.5 ± 5.8, p < 0.001), while the control group showed minimal change (44.8 ± 5.9 to 43.6 ± 6.1, p = 0.124). Post-intervention comparisons revealed a significant difference between groups (t = 7.21, p < 0.001). These findings indicate that guided deep breathing effectively reduces preoperative anxiety in C-section patients, suggesting it as a simple, safe, and cost-effective intervention that can improve maternal psychological well-being and surgical readiness. This non-pharmacological approach may also contribute to better postoperative outcomes.
