Abstract

The mastery of speaking micro-skills, particularly grammatical accuracy, is essential for students in Islamic boarding schools to achieve effective communication. However, traditional approaches often lack interactive learning support. This study evaluates the effectiveness of poster media in improving students’ speaking proficiency through the Monday Talk Program at ITTC Darussalam Gontor. A quasi-experimental non-equivalent control group design was implemented, with participants selected through purposive sampling based on similar proficiency levels and the availability of intact classes. The experimental group received poster-based instruction, while the control group used mind mapping. Pre-test and post-test scores were collected to measure learning gains. The results show a significant improvement (p = 0.000) in the experimental group, indicating that poster media effectively enhance grammatical accuracy in speaking. These findings suggest that integrating visual media into structured speaking programs supports more engaging and effective learning. In conclusion, poster media represent a valuable instructional tool for strengthening students’ grammatical proficiency in Islamic boarding school contexts.

Abstract

Authentic evaluation is an assessment approach that emphasizes high-level thinking skills and students' ability to complete meaningful tasks that reflect real-world situations. In the context of reading learning in English, it is an important alternative to overcome the limitations of traditional evaluations that tend to only measure literal understanding. This study aims to describe the application of authentic evaluation in reading learning and identify the forms, strategies, and challenges of its implementation in a secondary school environment. This study applied a descriptive qualitative approach with English teachers and students as research subjects in a junior high school. Data collection techniques through in-depth interviews, direct observation, and documentation of the assessment instruments used. Data analysis used the Miles and Huberman model including the stages of data reduction, data presentation (data display), and drawing conclusions/verification. The results of the study showed that teachers implemented authentic evaluation in various forms, such as text summaries, reading journals, written critical responses, and reading-based presentations. This was able to improve contextually students' reading comprehension in depth. However, several obstacles were found, such as time constraints and the need for objective assessment instruments. Strategies such as the use of rubrics and gradual training for students have proven effective in overcoming these obstacles. This study emphasizes the importance of authentic evaluation as a more meaningful assessment approach in learning reading.

Abstract

This study aims to identify the English for Specific Purposes (ESP) learning needs of students majoring in Occupational, Health, and Safety (OHS) in order to design relevant teaching materials. This study employed a survey design involving 30 OHS students and an ESP instructor at Darussalam Gontor University. Data was collected through questionnaires and semi-structured interviews, then analyzed using descriptive statistics and qualitative analysis. The findings indicate that students strongly prefer communication-oriented learning, particularly speaking skills for workplace interactions, and emphasize the importance of mastering vocabulary related to OHS. However, current ESP teaching materials are considered inadequate due to their limited relevance to the specific OHS context. Students also expressed a need for contextualized teaching materials that incorporate real-life tasks, international safety standards, and performance-based assessments. In summary, this study highlights the need to develop context-specific, task-based ESP teaching materials aligned with the demands of professional communication in the OHS field. These findings provide an empirical foundation for designing an English for Occupational Health and Safety (EOHS) textbook that better supports students’ readiness to communicate in global workplaces.
