Abstract

English speaking fluency is a vital communication skill for engineering students, especially in the context of increasing global collaboration and the internationalization of higher education. However, many engineering students face persistent challenges in oral communication due to a lack of confidence, limited exposure to authentic speaking environments, and traditional language teaching methods that prioritize passive learning. This study explores the effectiveness of Problem-Based Learning (PBL) as an instructional approach to enhance English speaking fluency among engineering students. PBL is rooted in constructivist learning theory and emphasizes collaborative, learner-centered activities that simulate real-world problem-solving scenarios. Through a quasi-experimental research design, two groups of engineering students at a public university in Indonesia were observed over one academic semester. The experimental group engaged in PBL-driven English speaking sessions, while the control group received conventional speaking instruction. Pre- and post-intervention assessments, alongside qualitative data from classroom observations and student reflections, were analyzed to measure improvements in fluency, coherence, and language complexity. The results revealed that the PBL group demonstrated significantly higher gains in speaking fluency compared to the control group. Moreover, students reported increased motivation, reduced speaking anxiety, and greater engagement in communicative tasks. These findings suggest that integrating PBL into English for Specific Purposes (ESP) instruction can provide engineering students with meaningful opportunities to practice language in contextually rich and cognitively engaging environments. This research contributes to the growing body of literature on innovative pedagogy in language education and offers practical implications for curriculum designers, language instructors, and policymakers aiming to improve communicative competence in STEM fields. Future studies are recommended to examine long-term impacts and scalability across diverse educational settings.

Abstract

This study aims to describe the level of academic language mastery and learning achievement of accounting students and to analyze the role of academic language mastery in improving students’ learning achievement. This research employed a quantitative approach with a descriptive correlational design. The population consisted of students of the Accounting Department at Politeknik Negeri Bali, with samples selected using simple random sampling. Data on academic language mastery were collected using a Likert-scale questionnaire, while learning achievement data were obtained from students’ Grade Point Average (GPA) records. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and simple linear regression analysis. The results show that the mean score of students’ academic language mastery was 78.45 with a standard deviation of 6.21, which falls into the high category. Students’ learning achievement had a mean GPA of 3.42 with a standard deviation of 0.31, categorized as good. The regression analysis indicates that academic language mastery has a significant role in improving learning achievement, with a significance value of 0.000 (< 0.05) and a contribution of 31.6%. These findings indicate that academic language mastery is an important factor in supporting accounting students’ academic achievement.

Abstract

The purpose of this paper is to explain the benefits of watching English movies as an effective way to improve language skills. This method offers learners a practical and enjoyable way to enhance their English proficiency, including listening, speaking, vocabulary, and pronunciation. Watching movies allows learners to experience real conversations, different accents, and the correct use of English in daily life, making learning more meaningful and engaging. Using subtitles can help learners connect spoken words with their written forms. Beginners can start with subtitles in their native language and gradually switch to English subtitles to improve grammar and vocabulary. Movies with different accents, like American, British, or Australian, also help learners understand various ways of speaking English. Research supports the benefits of watching English movies for language learning. Studies show that movies help learners understand words in context, improve listening skills, and learn proper pronunciation. Repeating scenes, writing down new vocabulary, and practicing speaking based on movies enhance retention and usage. Moreover, movies introduce learners to different cultures, making learning more interesting and informative. This method is suitable for learners at all levels. Beginners can watch simple movies like animations, while advanced learners can explore movies with more complex dialogues. Rewatching movies helps learners notice new details, such as sentence structures and pronunciation, that they might have missed before. Discussing movies with others is also a fun way to practice speaking and critical thinking. In conclusion, watching English movies combines education and entertainment, providing learners with an enjoyable way to improve their English skills. It motivates learners, helps them understand authentic language use, and enriches their cultural knowledge, making it a valuable tool for language learning.

Abstract

This study aims to describe the process of internalizing religious values of Islamic Religious Education in students’ language skills learning at the elementary school level. This research employed a qualitative approach with a field research design. The research subjects included Islamic Religious Education teachers, classroom teachers/Indonesian language teachers, and elementary school students. Data were collected through observation, semi-structured interviews, and documentation. Data analysis was conducted using an interactive model consisting of data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing. The findings reveal that the internalization of religious values in language skills learning occurs through several stages, namely the introduction of religious values, understanding of values, reinforcement and habituation, and value internalization reflected in students’ language behavior. Religious values were internalized through teacher role modeling, the use of polite language, selection of texts containing Islamic values, and habituation of respectful language use in classroom interactions. This process positively contributes to the development of students’ religious character, particularly in terms of politeness, honesty, and responsibility in language use. The study implies that language skills learning should be integratively designed with Islamic Religious Education to strengthen students’ religious character in elementary schools.

Abstract

This community service activity aimed to improve teachers’ competence in implementing Islamic Religious Education (IRE) learning based on religious narrative texts to enhance elementary school students’ language skills. The program was conducted at an elementary school in Bagu Village, Central Lombok Regency, involving IRE teachers and classroom teachers. A participatory and collaborative approach was applied through needs analysis, training, implementation assistance, and evaluation stages. The training activities included conceptual presentations on narrative-based IRE learning, practical sessions on lesson plan development, and teaching simulations. The results indicated an improvement in teachers’ understanding and skills in integrating religious values with students’ language abilities, particularly in reading comprehension, speaking, and simple writing. Classroom implementation showed increased student participation, confidence in expressing ideas, and better understanding of religious values through storytelling activities. Therefore, narrative-based IRE learning training proved to be an effective strategy for strengthening language literacy and improving IRE learning in elementary schools.
